The four of them stood as a tight-knit island in the center of the basin, while Lana and Sarah formed a desperate perimeter against the shambling corpses that drew closer with relentless, uneven steps. Their armor scraped together with each movement, the metallic sounds echoing across the sand as they shifted positions to block and strike. Vanessa stood perfectly still in the center right next to Carmen, her posture unnaturally rigid as if she were carved from stone. Above her, a gigantic array of interconnected matrices glowed in a multicolored light that pulsed with each new bolt fired; with each repetition, she added another spell to its ever-growing total, the intricate patterns weaving through the air like celestial machinery. The air shimmered with heat distortion around the spell construct.

With every spell, she unleashed a hailstorm of arcane motes that peppered the surroundings, setting off small explosions wherever they hit. The impacts sent sand flying in miniature geysers, each detonation accompanied by a sharp crackle that merged with the groans of the undead and the clang of weapons against bone. The bolts had grown far too numerous for Vanessa to control. Within less than an hour, they were flying every which way, and the only control she had left was over their general direction. Her brow glistened with sweat despite the protective magic that shielded her from the desert heat, her fingers trembling as she struggled to maintain focus on the primary targets while the auxiliary bolts flew wild.

By then, Sarah and Lana had to dodge and block not just the encroaching beasts, but also the chaos of Vanessa's unleashed spell. At first, it had been easy to dodge the five or so rogue motes that slipped through Vanessa's control, but over time, that number had grown. Every wave now bathed the basin in thirty or forty auxiliary bolts of arcane energy. Sarah's movements became increasingly frantic as she spun between attacks, her daggers carving through bone one moment and deflecting stray bolts the next, the impacts against her blades sending showers of multicolored sparks across the battlefield. Lana found herself constantly adjusting her shield angle, trying to create a barrier that could protect both herself and Sarah from the undead's grasping hands as well as Vanessa's increasingly unpredictable spellfire.

By the end of the second hour, Lana and Sarah had retreated toward the center, unable to dodge the crossfire any longer. They had suffered multiple hits that required treatment from Carmen, who worked furiously to keep pace with the mounting injuries. Her golden staff glowed with a soft light as she channeled healing energy into their battered bodies. The sand around their position was now cratered with countless small explosions, the basin floor transformed into a treacherous landscape of pockmarks and scorched earth that made their footing increasingly precarious with each passing minute.

The massive matrix above Vanessa expanded like a galaxy being born in slow motion, now encompassing close to a hundred spells at once in an intricate web of arcane energy that blotted out the harsh desert sun. The air around her crackled with raw power, making the fine hairs on her arms stand on end. She could feel that her mana was draining faster now, her connection to the arcane reservoir taut as an overstretched bowstring.

At first, she had not noticed that each additional spell drew out more mana than the last, but with the staggering number currently hovering above her, the exponential cost became painfully clear. The drain had gone up little by little at first, barely registering in her consciousness, but now each new addition felt like siphoning water from a rapidly shrinking well. The only reason she could keep the spell active was that it only consumed a large burst of mana when she cast the next Starfall Matrix to add another spell weave to the total.

"That's insane..." Lana muttered, her voice barely audible above the thunderous cascade of magical energy.

Everything in front of Vanessa ceased to exist, swallowed up by a churning storm of dust and sand that rose like a brown mushroom cloud against the brilliant sky. The ground beneath them trembled with the force of continuous detonations, the sand shifting and settling into new patterns after each wave of destruction. The smell of ozone and burnt bone filled the air, a pungent combination that made Lana's stomach turn.

Sarah and Carmen looked over the empty basin, their eyes wide with disbelief as the dust slowly settled to reveal a field of nothing but freshly disturbed sand and craters.

"They're all dead," Sarah said, her voice tinged with awe and something darker—a recognition of how easily they could have been on the receiving end of such overwhelming force.

"And every time they reform, they get killed immediately," Carmen added. Her eyes calculated the sheer destructive efficiency with a mixture of admiration and growing concern for Vanessa's state. Her gaze kept flickering to Vanessa's face, noting the sweat-soaked strands of red hair plastered to her temples, the slight tremor in her hands, and the hollow look in her eyes that spoke of a mind stretched to its absolute limits.

After three minutes that felt like an eternity, another group of Sun-Bleached Husks formed and crawled out of the sand, their bony fingers clawing their way back into existence as if summoned by some malevolent will beneath the earth. They barely had time to assume their shambling gait before being obliterated by dozens of glowing, multicolored orbs that detonated on contact.

Vanessa stood between casts, deeply focused, her entire being concentrated on maintaining the complex matrix above her. Her eyes were fixed on a point somewhere in the middle distance, her jaw tight with concentration. Every time the motes shot out, she tried to navigate them, but there were far too many to control. Her fingers moved in precise patterns, but the sheer volume of magical energy she was managing made fine control impossible, leaving the auxiliary bolts to rain down with pure randomness.

As the next group reformed, she cast the next matrix with a flick of her wrist that seemed almost effortless despite the mounting strain. The tome fluttered in her hand, pages turning on their own as if guided by an unseen force. Then, a chime filled the air around them, sounding like the ringing of a massive church bell but with a crystalline quality that seemed to vibrate through their very bones. The sound echoed across the desert, bouncing off distant dunes and creating a haunting melody that somehow both soothed and unnerved them simultaneously. The entire cluster of spell circles began to shift and weave into one another, the colors becoming more vivid and the patterns more complex.

"What is happening?" Lana asked while looking up at the shifting display, her voice a mixture of fascination and alarm.

The matrix was no longer just a collection of individual spell weaves; it had transformed into something greater, something that seemed to be developing a will of its own. The lights pulsed in unison, creating a hypnotic rhythm that made it difficult to look away. Carmen reached out instinctively toward Vanessa, her hand hovering just short of touching the other woman's shoulder, as if uncertain whether physical contact might disrupt the delicate balance of power. Sarah simply watched with narrowed eyes, trying to calculate the implications of this unexpected evolution while keeping one hand ready on her daggers in case the situation suddenly turned dangerous.

[System Announcement]

─ Conditions fulfilled

─ Active spell arrays: 100/100

─ Commencing creation of Celestial Downfall

The arrays began to shift and weave into each other until they filled the entire sky above the massive basin, their intricate patterns interlocking like gears in some cosmic machine. Above them hung a multilayered circle that mirrored the smaller spell matrices. Sections of it moved and shifted in a breathtaking display of arcane construction, the colors swirling in hypnotic spirals of emerald, sapphire, and ruby. The air crackled with raw energy, making their skin tingle and hair stand on end, as if they stood at the heart of a storm contained only by the fragile will of a single woman. Every time one of the Husks reformed, a beam of multicolored light would ignite in the overhanging construct before striking the beast with a pinpoint accuracy that entirely defied the earlier chaos of Vanessa's spellfire.

"Whoa... it's like a lightning storm," Sarah gasped, her head tilted back as she watched the beams of light rain down upon the desert floor.

The bolts struck their targets with unerring precision, each impact accompanied by a soft sizzle as the undead were instantly incinerated. Their desiccated forms offered no resistance, crumbling into dust under the relentless magical assault, the remains scattering like fine sand in the wind. The air grew thick with the smell of burnt bone, as if the very atmosphere were being purged by the celestial fire above. Lana and Carmen stood transfixed, their earlier fears forgotten as they witnessed something that transcended ordinary spellcasting—something that bordered on divine intervention.

Vanessa stood frozen, her arms outstretched as if holding up the very sky. Her green eyes were wide with terror and awe, her lips parted slightly as she felt the enormous power flowing through her like a river bursting its banks. She had lost all control; the spell had taken on a life of its own, yet somehow it was working better than she could have ever imagined. The sheer scale of it was intoxicating, a rush so profound it made her head spin and her knees tremble. Her consciousness felt stretched thin across the desert, connected to every beam of light that fell from the sky, every Husk that disintegrated into nothingness. She could feel the System's presence weaving through her spell, guiding it with an intelligence far beyond her own capabilities, turning what had begun as a desperate defense into something terrifyingly beautiful and devastatingly efficient.

"This is... I've never felt anything like this..." Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling with exertion and wonder. Each word was a struggle, her throat dry as the desert sands beneath their feet. "I can feel the entire basin all at once, each beast that dwells within it."

Her consciousness had expanded beyond the limits of her physical form, reaching out like invisible tendrils to touch every corner of the sandy depression. She could sense the faint stirrings of the undead deep beneath the surface, feel the sand shifting as their forms began to reform, and detect the minuscule vibrations of their clawed fingers digging through the sediment. The connection was intimate and overwhelming, a symphony of death and regeneration that played out in her mind's eye with crystal clarity.

Dozens of beams shot out from the heavens at once, each of them striking down a Husk in a single, devastating blow. The light was brilliant against the harsh sunlight, each bolt a different hue, forming a rainbow of destruction that painted the desert in temporary colors before the bodies dissolved into fine, ashen dust. Vanessa gasped as each impact sent a shockwave through her expanded consciousness with the sheer force of the feedback.

"Are you okay, Vanessa? Do you need me to do something?" Carmen asked, placing a gentle hand on Vanessa's shoulder. The golden staff glowed with a soft light, ready to intervene at a moment's notice. The warmth of Carmen's touch barely registered through Vanessa's heightened sensory overload; it was like feeling a candle's warmth while standing in the heart of a star.

Vanessa shook her head, her eyes still locked on the display of arcane power above them. "Stay back," she said, her voice strained with effort. "The feedback is immense. One wrong move could cause it all to collapse."

She could feel the delicate balance of the spell matrices, like a house of cards built in the middle of a hurricane. The slightest disruption—a careless touch, an unexpected sound, even a stray thought—might send the entire construct spiraling out of control.

"How long can you keep this up, Vanessa?" Lana asked, her shield held at the ready despite the lack of immediate threats. Her gauntleted hands creaked as she tightened her grip, prepared for any sudden change on the battlefield.

"I... I don't know," she admitted, her hands trembling as she struggled to maintain her focus. Droplets of sweat trickled down her temples, tracing paths through the dust on her skin before dripping from her chin onto the sand below. "The mana cost is... astronomical. But it isn't draining it from me..."
