Kandora stood with her arms raised. Her posture of surrender did little to diminish the predatory aura that clung to her like a second skin. Her tall stature, amplified by the gleaming armor that hugged her muscular frame, cast an imposing silhouette against the backdrop of the clearing. The rain had softened to a fine mist, clinging to her dark hair and tracing paths down the angular planes of her face.

Her sharp eyes darted between Searanox and his circling drones, a flicker of defiance warring with the pragmatism that had compelled her to yield. "What do you intend to do with us?" she asked. Her voice was softer than it had been moments before, yet carried an undercurrent of steel. The question hung in the air, tinged with a disbelief she hadn't anticipated would color her existence in this newly integrated world.

"That's an excellent question," Searanox replied, his voice a low rumble that resonated with the hum of his magitech creations. He leaned forward slightly, before he continued.

"I do have all night to enjoy myself... To quench my thirst for knowledge, or simply punish you for setting foot on this world." As he spoke, his drones continued their silent dance around the surrendered party, their metallic bodies glinting in the moon light coming through the clouds. Some vanished in soft flares of blue light, dissolving into motes of energy that drifted upward before scattering on the breeze. In their place, new ones materialized.

Anax, who had just been patched up by their healer, stumbled as his drones materialized around them, constructing a cage of glowing blue barriers. The energy hummed ominously, pulsing with a synchronized rhythm. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the damp earth with a soft thud. The healer's residual green light still flickered around her freshly sealed wound, a stark contrast to the rising panic in her eyes.

"I will answer everything you want to know," she stammered, her voice cracking with fear. "Just please don't kill me."

Searanox stepped deliberately toward the barrier. His magitech-enhanced coat rustled softly with each movement. The metallic scent of blood filled the air as he reached down, his fingers closing around Quin's severed arm. With a casual motion, he tossed it through the barrier. The limb landed in the mud beside the kneeling Anax with a sickening wet slap, spraying droplets of rainwater and blood.

"Hold it against your stump," he commanded, his tone flat and devoid of emotion.

Quin hesitated, his eyes widening in disbelief. The pain was excruciating, but the alternative was clear. Gritting his teeth, he retrieved his own arm, his massive fingers fumbling as he pressed the severed flesh against the bleeding stump. As he complied, the silver drone appeared again, hovering silently above them. A beam of green energy enveloped the severed limb and the wound. Within seconds, the flesh knitted together seamlessly, leaving only a faint scar.

"You healed my arm..." Quin breathed. His voice filled with astonishment as he flexed his newly reattached fingers, testing the movement with cautious awe.

"Now, let's see," Searanox continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I will cut off one or two limbs, or perhaps chop them into fine pieces, to find out how much must be left for my drone to fix you up."

He spoke with a cold certainty that underscored the absolute truth of what he had just said, even though it sounded insane. The casual way he discussed dismemberment sent a fresh wave of terror through his captives.

"You plan on torturing us while using us as lab rats?" Ulrum, the healer of the group, spoke out. His voice was strained, the weight of his healing arts now feeling like a curse that would prolong their suffering. The others stared at Searanox, the reality of their situation sinking deeper with each passing moment.

Searanox brought out his chair and sat down, the rain having fully stopped. The metallic legs settled into the mud with a soft squelch.

"You see," he began, leaning back with an unnerving calm, "I have to make sure you tell me the truth, and it would be a waste not to gather data as I do." He gazed at them with analytical detachment, as if they were specimens under examination.

Anax crawled closer to the barrier, her movements desperate and undignified. She pressed her palms against the shimmering energy field, the cool surface doing nothing to calm her racing heart.

"Please don't," she pleaded, her voice trembling. "I will tell you everything, I swear. I'll even share your bed if you ask it of me." Her offer hung in the air, a desperate bargain in a world where such currency might hold unexpected value.

Kandora's and Vindala's faces contorted in disgust at the plea. Kandora shot a venomous glare at her teammate, her jaw tight with revulsion. "Why don't you agree to a System Contract while you're at it," Kandora spat, her voice dripping with sarcasm and contempt. The suggestion hung in the air, a grim reminder of the magical bindings that could enforce truth in this unforgiving world.

Searanox leaned forward, tilting his head to one side as if he had heard something interesting. The fine mist clung to his features as he considered Kandora's words.

<Iris, my dear. Are you still awake?>

His thoughts traveled through the ruby earring, a conduit across the vast expanse between him and the fortress city.

A moment later, he could hear her voice in his mind, smooth as polished marble yet with an undercurrent of restless energy.

<Of course. I'm waiting in your room for your return.>

He could practically hear her tail thrashing against the sheets, a telltale sign of impatience that brought a faint smile to his lips.

<Good girl. Would you mind telling me what a System Contract is?>

He projected the question through the magical earpiece, while his outward expression remained unchanged, a mask of dispassionate authority.

There was silence for a moment before she answered, her thoughts flowing clear and precise into his consciousness.

<A System Contract is exactly what it sounds like: a contract made through the System. The terms and conditions change depending on the contract, as does the way the System enforces them. If the contract is bound in secrecy, there is no way for anyone to know about it, since the System will prevent you from speaking of it.>

The mental connection carried a faint echo of her distaste for such magical bindings.

Searanox rubbed the stubble on his chin and nodded, his eyes never leaving his captives as he processed the new information.

<Thanks, my dear. I'll make sure you sleep well when I return.>

The promise hung in the air between them, a private intimacy amidst the public display of power.

"That's the worst telepathic communication I've ever seen. Can't you be more obvious?" Kandora watched his face. The subtle shift in his expression practically told a story to anyone paying attention. Her lips curled into a sneer, the confidence returning as she spotted a potential weakness in her captor's composure. "The twitch in your jaw, the slight glaze over your eyes—amateurs at least try to hide when they're getting instructions from afar."

"Excuse me, I didn't know you were in a rush... Why don't you tell me about these contracts you just mentioned?" Searanox leaned down slightly, bringing his face closer to the barrier. Despite kneeling in the wet ground, she was almost as tall as he was. The fine mist clung to his pale features as he studied her defiant expression. The light from his drones cast an eerie blue glow across the space between them. His eyes narrowed slightly, betraying his interest despite his attempt at nonchalance.

She turned her head away, the damp strands of dark hair falling across her cheek like a curtain. "They are System-governed contracts. Unbreakable. And no, I won't enter into a contract with a lowblood." The words dripped with aristocratic disdain, her posture stiffening with renewed pride despite her surrender. To her, some fates were worse than death, and binding herself through the System to someone she considered beneath her station was among them.

Suddenly, Anax fell through the barrier she had been leaning against. The shimmering blue energy field dissolved beneath her fingertips, causing her to tumble forward with a surprised yelp. Her hands plunged into the mud as she caught herself, the wet earth squishing between her fingers.

"Anax, was it? Tell me, how does it work? If you answer and enter into a contract, I won't hurt you." Searanox's voice cut through the soft rain that had just picked up again. His attention shifted from Kandora to the slightly smaller figure now sprawled at his feet.

She pulled herself out of the wet ground and looked up at him. Her orange eyes were wide with a mixture of terror and calculation. The rain had plastered her hair against her face, making her look younger and more vulnerable than before.

"You simply will the System to do it. And the other party will get a System window showing what you want it to be," she said. Her face took on a deeper shade as she explained, a flush of embarrassment coloring her cheeks at having to share such fundamental knowledge with a stranger who held her life in his hands.

As she finished speaking, her eyes widened and glossed over. In front of his eyes, a System window opened up. The translucent blue materialized out of thin air, the text scrolled into view, stark white against the cobalt background, followed by a series of terms that Searanox had mentally formulated mere seconds ago. Anax's breath hitched in her throat as she read the words that would bind her fate to his will, her body tensing as if preparing to flee despite knowing there was nowhere to run.
