Iris drew closer in his arms. Her slender body quivered, a fragile thing pressed against the iron of his armor. A whimper escaped her throat, a sound lost against his suit.

"I'm sorry that I wasn't of more use to you," she whispered, her breath hitching. "I tried to tell you everything. The System..."

"It's alright, my dear."

Beneath his measured tone coiled an undercurrent of suppressed fury. A murderous fire burned behind his words as his heavy, fingers combed through her thick fur. The metal gauntlet traced the silver-white strands that stood in stark contrast against the dark mane of hers.

"We must rise now. It is almost time."

She pulled herself tighter against his chest, burying her warm muzzle deep into the crook of his neck to inhale his scent. A tentative lick followed, the rough, beast-like texture of her tongue dragging against his skin. No, her posture pleaded without words. Her desperate body language begged to delay the inevitable separation.

Searanox stood, lifting her effortlessly. Her weight registered as negligible, nothing more than a feather in his grasp.

"Only until we reach the Atrium," he declared.

His footfalls struck the polished stone floors with measured, deliberate rhythm. He drew out the walk through the towering, cavernous halls to grant her every possible second in his arms. The opulent corridors of the fortress tower felt like a grand mausoleum. The silence magnified the heavy steps of his boots. His form casting long shadows across the gothic architecture.

Within the grand Atrium, the ambient light had suffocated to a dying ember. The massive hall stood near empty. It was a ghost town compared to its usual, desperate bustle. Most surviving citizens had barricaded themselves in their crude dwellings, bracing for the terror of the second stage.

Searanox strode through the main concourse, ignoring the scattered clusters of humans. They huddled together whispering prayers to gods he knew didn't exist. Raw terror dominated their gazes as they stared at the looming countdown. Their wide, eyes darted around the vast space, searching the monolithic architecture for a salvation that did not exist.

A whimper tore from Iris's throat as he lowered her. Her paws met the cold, polished marble floor with a sharp clink of claws. The noise shattered the sudden stillness.

"Will you stay with me?"

The question dripped with vulnerability. Her silver eyes searched his impassive face, issuing a silent plea for an anchor against the encroaching void.

"Sure," he said.

He stepped toward the dark gray marble counter where Samantha and Rayan stood frozen. He leaned over the desk, his figure casting an eclipse-like shadow over their frail forms.

"Are you scared of what will happen?" he asked, his voice a low, rumbling vibration.

They jerked toward him startled like cornered prey. After a hesitant nod, Rayan forced words past his lips. His voice sounded thin and broken by past traumas.

"Will it be like the bloodbath last time?"

"Who knows? It is my first second infusion as well," Searanox answered. A deep chuckle vibrated in his chest. The sound rang hollow, devoid of any genuine humor. It provided a chilling contrast to the scent of fear saturating the air.

As the ominous timer bled away its final seconds, the ambient light outside the fortress mutated. The gloom deepened into a unnatural darkness.

The firmament tore open.

The sky above dissolved into a churning vortex of impossible colors, purples, reds, and blues writhed across the heavens. The colors bled into one another like a oil painting, a celestial canvas of sheer chaos. This unnatural phenomenon did not just infect the sky above Androxis; it swallowed the entire planet. It was a global spectacle.

The very air turned stagnant. A breathless, crushing anticipation hung heavy in the atmosphere.

Then, the chime of a monolithic bell rang out. It did not echo through the air; it manifested deep within their minds. The tone felt ethereal yet impossibly heavy.

The artificial voice of the System spoke. A window carved itself into the vision of every surviving human soul.

[Global Announcement]

─ Inhabitants of Planet Earth, Designation: 734, Sector 82-Gamma

─ Commencing Stage Two of the System Integration

─ Increasing ambient Aether density

─ Integration into the greater Multiverse completed

─ Planetary protection partially lifted

The moment the text burned into his retinas, the physical laws of the world shifted. The atmosphere instantly thickened, becoming dense and impossibly heavy.

Agonized screams erupted across the Atrium. Every ordinary human collapsed. Lungs failed to draw breath against the sudden, crushing atmospheric weight. Across the marble counter, Samantha and Rayan crumpled to the stone floor, convulsing in desperate gasps.

Next to him, Iris dropped to her knees. She braced her hands against the marble desk, her muzzle peeling back into a vicious, feral snarl. She fought the crushing gravity, pulling jagged, defiant breaths through bared fangs.

Searanox stood unmoving.

He felt a subtle, physical pressure pressing against him. It proved uncomfortable, like diving deep underwater, but nothing more. He surveyed the writhing bodies of the humans on the floor. The scene mirrored what he had seen in the initial Integration, just a bit more violent. The suffocating gravity did not vanish. It compounded, the Aether thickening like hardening resin around them.

Then, just as abruptly as it struck, the crushing weight evaporated. The air returned to a breathable state, identical to the cruel tease of the first stage.

The humans on the floor groaned, spitting blood and bile as they dragged themselves up from the polished, light gray stone. Some lacked the strength, rolling onto their backs and staring vacantly at the vaulted ceiling.

Before Searanox could speak, a second, reality-rending chime vibrated through his skull.

[Global Announcement]

Initial Population Survival Overview

─ 42.00% perished during the first stage of the Integration

─ 39.08% remain below Level 5

─ 15.92% reached Level 5 or above

─ 2.71% reached Level 10 or above

─ 0.29% reached Level 15 ore above

─ 0.00% reached Level 20 or above

Searanox stared at the numbers. The sheer scale of the slaughter was staggering. Over forty percent of humanity, billions of souls had been rendered into ash in mere weeks. He looked at Iris, who was wiping a thin trail of blood from her nose. He shifted his gaze to Samantha and Rayan. They had scrambled to their feet, their pale faces reflecting the unforgiving reality of their cursed existence.

His eyes drifted back to the final line of the announcement. It was the most chilling statistic of all: 'none' had reached Level 20 or above. He himself was Level 27, an outlier even among the outliers. The weight of that number settled on him; he wasn't just strong, he was an anomaly.

`How many others exist on earth at my level, aside from Iris?`

His strategic musings shattered as two personal System window materialized.

[System Notification]

─ Restrictions upon the Individual have been lifted

The second Notification was flickering and spasming as if it had to fight to stay in existence. The contents of this notification was entirely unreadable. He could make out a few words at the beginning of the text but the further it went on the worse it got. Each of the characters was glitching and constantly moving. As if it were a glitched imitation of a system window.

[Notification]

─ For being the... world and reaching lev... stage... reward... O██ ███iv██ ██o█ d█a██

`Searanox narrowed his eyes. Restrictions... What restrictions? What even is that reward.`

Before he could delve into his own mind to decipher the cryptic words, another window overlaid his vision.

[System Notification]

─ Integration Stage 2: Complete

─ Includes: further ascension of all living beings on this planet, aether infused in non-biological matter, formation of aether-dense dungeons, restricted access from inhabitants of the greater multiverse

─ Stage 3 starts in 27d 23h 57m 36s

He stared at the ominous text, his mind dissecting the implications of the prior windows. The callous mention of a third stage, complete with a ticking countdown, served as a chilling reminder. This was not a singular apocalypse; it was a series of escalating trials.

With a simple, focused thought, the windows dissolved from his vision.

He leaned down toward Iris, dropping his voice to a hushed whisper. "Did you receive a notification regarding personal restrictions?"

Iris held his gaze. She shook her head. She opened her mouth to ask a question, but the cold, impenetrable look in his eyes provided all the answers she needed. He did not know, and whatever it meant, it promised further violence.

Searanox straightened his posture, towering over the desk once more. "Rayan, Samantha. Did you endure a pleasant transition?" he asked, his tone returning to its baseline of indifference.

Samantha squeezed Rayan’s trembling hand. She kept her gaze fixed firmly on the marble floor. "I would not call it pleasant, my Lord."

Rayan remained mute, offering only a rigid, terrified nod.

"Alright. Return to your duties. I anticipate a surge of new citizens eager for points," Searanox commanded.

"Yes, my Lord," they chimed in near-perfect, conditioned unison before scrambling away behind their respectable stations.

As the traumatized duo fled, Searanox turned back to Iris. She stood silent, her silver eyes fixed upon him, awaiting his decree.

"I am going to the roof," he stated, his tone a bit softer then it had been moments ago. "I must survey the physical alterations to the fortress. You, my dear, will head to the dungeon spire. You should be able to enter it again in due time, if I'm correct."

She gave a curt nod, her feral instincts sharpening. "Yes. In less than an hour, I can reenter the Courtyard of the Dead."

He reached out, his heavy gauntlet stroking the fur at the nape of her neck. "I will attempt to be in bed tonight."

With that final, uncharacteristic promise, he pivoted on his heel. He strode toward the central node, his dark cloak billowing behind him, before vanishing in a blinding flash of violet energy.

He materialized on the sweeping rooftop balcony.

The view immediately stole the breath from his lungs. The sky remained a churning, bleeding canvas of purples and bruised reds, now intermingling with the familiar darkness of the early morning sky. The horizon once a clear, definitive line separating the earth from the heavens—now shimmered with a haze-like distortion.

Yet, looking down over the sprawling, jagged architecture of the fortress city, the physical geography of its surrounding land appeared untouched. No monolithic new landmarks had erupted from the earth. No massive, unfathomable beasts laid siege to his walls.

With a thought, five teardrop-shaped mechanical drones materialized from his drone storage. They hovered in the distorted air for a fraction of a second before darting away. Each machine shot off in a different cardinal direction, vanishing into the darkness of the night to map the horrors of this new integration.

Behind him, a pale blue light flared. A foldable chair manifested from his spatial storage ring.

Searanox let his weight sink into the seat. The metal groaned in protest. He closed his eyes against the bleeding sky. One half of his mind began dissecting the cryptic words of the System's notifications. The other half sank into the memories of his sweeping drones, searching the dark for any changes.
