Vanessa's vibrant red hair was splayed wildly across the pristine grass of one of Androxis's meticulously maintained parks. Her emerald eyes tracked the almost nonexistent, wispy clouds drifting across the sky as the sunlight warmed her skin. Hours had passed since their return from the darkness of the dungeon and their subsequent dispersal throughout the sprawling city.

Carmen had returned to her makeshift hospital, a sanctuary where she was currently drilling System-awakened novices in the healing arts essential for Androxis's survival. Vanessa could almost smell the metallic tang of copper, imagining the agonizing screams of mutilated delvers as magic fused their torn meat and shattered bones back together.

Sarah and Lana were somewhere within the city's imposing structures. Vanessa knew they were both likely engaged in some degrading display of sexual submission, desperately attempting to catch the attention of the man who held their lives in his hands. They had both changed since the claustrophobic nightmare of the Howling Caverns. Their actions were now driven by a need to please him, twisting themselves into obedient, submissive pets just for his protection.

Vanessa herself had made that exact same, humiliating mistake once.

Her beautiful face contorted into a bitter, ugly sneer as her gaze shifted from the sterile, empty sky to the unnaturally glass-like surface of a nearby decorative pond. The deeply humiliating memory was seared into her mind. It haunted her every waking moment, the hours she had spent in her quarters gathering her courage, the calculated seductive approach in the dim lighting, the deliberate press of her soft, trembling body against his form. While she whispered practiced, breathy words of absolute surrender against the skin of his neck.

She remembered the intoxicating scent of his, that had made her core clench with a arousal. She had offered herself, parting her lips, tilting her hips to grind subtly against him, willing to be his whore, his toy, his plaything. Anything, as long as it meant she would never have to face the apocalypse alone.

`He just brushed my cheek.` The memory whispered venomously in her mind. `A single, fleeting touch that sent a jolt of heat straight to my center... and then he dismissed me. He looked right through my exposed flesh, right through my pleading eyes, as if I were nothing. As if my existence, my offering, was merely a tedious inconvenience.`

Vanessa pushed herself upright, her manicured fingers digging viciously into the dark, loamy soil beneath the pristine grass, tearing the blades up by the roots. A sudden, surge of heat washed through her trembling body as her knuckles whitened from the immense pressure of her clenched fists. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps. She saw the casual way his eyes lingered on his other female subordinates, the possessive intimacy of his touches with all of them, the way they melted into submissive puddles at his feet.

All of them, except her.

`It's not fucking fair... I was ready to give him absolutely everything.` Her mind screamed, the jealousy threatening to choke her. `I offered myself, body and soul. To be whatever sick, twisted thing he required to slake his thirst.`

She would have done anything. She would have gladly accepted being used as a mere carnal diversion, a piece of warm meat to be discarded when he was spent, expecting absolutely nothing in return. All she had truly wanted was to be deeply embedded in that protected inner circle. Not merely for the taste of his power, but for that undeniable sense of absolute security his presence afforded them. In a world rapidly devolving into a meat grinder of monstrous horrors and psychological torment, that security was a drug she desperately craved.

The familiar, hot sting of unshed tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but the display of vulnerability was suppressed by her ingrained need for self-control. Weakness was a luxury she could no longer afford; it was a death sentence in Androxis. The monsters outside the walls would tear her apart, but the man inside the walls would simply let her rot if she proved useless. Control was the only weapon she had left in her arsenal.

Vanessa drew a deep shuddering breath, forcing her racing heart to slow before rising gracefully to her feet. She methodically brushed the green grass blades and dark soil from her clothes, smoothing the fabric over her hips.

The rhythmic sound of approaching footsteps caught her attention. She turned her head, her red hair whipping over her shoulder, to see Sarah walking rapidly toward her. A wide almost predatory smile was stretched unnaturally across the platinum blonde's face, but her eyes were entirely dead.

"I've been looking absolutely everywhere for you!" Sarah's voice carried a high-pitched, forced cheerfulness that failed to mask a much darker, trembling undertone.

"Can't a girl have a single fucking moment to herself in this prison?" Vanessa replied coldly, her tone dripping with venom, her attention already drifting dismissively back toward the pond's glassy, unmoving surface.

Sarah closed the remaining distance between them, her breathing ragged. The heavy scent of her floral perfume failed to cover the pungent stench of her nervous sweat. "Did you hear what just happened in the Tower?"

The fake, painted smile instantly vanished from Sarah's face, melting away to be replaced by a serious frown that was far more convincing than her previous expression. Her chest heaved against her tight tunic.

Vanessa slowly shook her head, her annoyance momentarily piqued. "What is it now? Another pathetic food riot in the outer districts? Did some poor bastard get publicly executed for stealing?"

"No." Sarah's trembling hands fiddled with the hem of her tunic, twisting the fabric until her knuckles turned white. "He... Lord Searanox. He came back through the portal... holding his own severed arm."

Sarah's impossible words hung suspended in the air between them like an executioner's blade.

For a fleeting moment, a morbid satisfaction flickered warmly within Vanessa's chest. The untouchable, arrogant god of Androxis, the man who had looked down upon her offered body with complete apathy, could be broken. He could bleed, just like anyone else. He could be ripped apart.

Then a much colder, vastly more pragmatic and terrifying thought pushed its way to the forefront of her mind. If a monster like Searanox—a man who radiated absolute power—could be so grievously mutilated, what hope did any of them have against the horrors that lurked beyond that gate? They were just vulnerable flesh, waiting to be consumed.

"He... he reattached it right there in the Atrium, right in front of everyone," Sarah continued, her breath catching in her throat, her voice dropping to a horrified whisper. "It was a mangled, bloody mess of shattered bone and torn meat. He ordered some warrior to cut the stump, but the idiot couldn't get through his bones. So... so he made Iris do it."

Sarah swallowed hard, her eyes wide as she retold what she had heard. "He made Iris cut off the healed flesh. She took that sword of hers, and she cleaved right through his shoulder. The blood... God, Vanessa, the blood sprayed everywhere, hot and thick on the marble. And he didn't even flinch. He didn't make a single sound. He just sat there, pressed the severed limb against his bleeding stump, and let his drone knit the flesh back together. Then... he just stood up and left for the Dungeons again covered in his own gore."

Vanessa stared at her, her emerald eyes wide, her mind racing at a million miles an hour. The sheer, unadulterated power, the casual, psychopathic brutality of it all. This wasn't a sign of weakness. This wasn't a god bleeding. It was a terrifying display of absolute control over life, death and his own physical form.

Her earlier satisfaction curdled into a existential fear that settled into her stomach. He wasn't just a powerful man playing with magical forces beyond human comprehension; he was fundamentally becoming one of those forces. He was evolving into something devoid of human frailty.

"He's not weak," Vanessa stated, her voice hollow and resonant as she finally understood the scope of the man they served. "He's just showing us all exactly how far we have to climb just to survive in his shadow." She turned her back completely away from the serene pond, the park, and the fragile illusion of safety this city provided.

"That's... that's not actually why I was desperately looking for you," Sarah said quietly, twisting her trembling hands together in front of her chest. Before Vanessa could turn and deliver a response, Sarah continued in the same quiet voice. "He wants us to clear the first floor of the Great Labyrinth. Within twelve hours."

Sarah's words cut through the sun-drenched atmosphere of the park like a serrated hunting knife.

The Great Labyrinth. The Gates of Tartarus. The massive, ominous Gate that sat in the city, radiating a suffocating aura of pure malevolence. It was a place that was strictly forbidden to enter until now. Rumors of what lay inside; monsters that didn't just kill, but violated, tortured, and kept their victims alive for prolonged consumption, were rampant among the populace even though no one had set food into its depths.

"Twelve hours?" Vanessa repeated, her own voice sounding incredibly foreign to her own ears.

The ambition she so carefully cultivated within herself suddenly warred with a primal instinct for immediate self-preservation. "Is he completely fucking insane? We're not ready for something like that."

The highly logical part of her brain immediately shifted into overdrive. She began rapidly assessing the abysmal risk factors, calculating the morbidity rates of four barely-equipped Level 12 women entering an death trap, and finding only one, undeniable conclusion: absolute suicide.

Sarah's false bravado had completely evaporated. Her carefully applied makeup couldn't even begin to hide the raw, animalistic dread shining in her dilated eyes.

"He... he wants us to enter the green portal into the Labyrinth, after Iris has cleared it herself." Sarah stammered, taking a hesitant, shaky step closer. Her usual seductive, hips-swaying swagger was replaced by a pleading, pathetic vulnerability. She looked like a lamb begging the butcher for a stay of execution.

The bitter resentment Vanessa had felt just moments ago over her sexual rejection suddenly seemed incredibly trivial, a petty concern from a bygone era. Her burning desire for Searanox's attention, for his physical touch, was no longer of any importance.

She stared intently into the raw fear shining wetly in Sarah's eyes, and she knew with absolute certainty that the exact same, terrified look was perfectly mirrored in her own.

They were just four women, recently hitting Level 12, entirely reliant on basic skills and gifted gear. And they were being unceremoniously shoved into a subterranean hellscape designed specifically to overwhelm the strong. The only thing in this entire world more terrifying than the black depths of the Labyrinth was the sociopathic man who was casually sending them there to bleed.

"That means we don't even have the time to fully prepare for something like this," Vanessa muttered, speaking more to herself than to the weeping platinum blonde standing before her.

They had only just survived their last dive into the graveyard, returning covered in bruises and monster ichor, and now they were expected to tackle a vastly greater challenge. She looked down at Sarah, who had lost all of her false confidence.

Vanessa's jaw clenched tightly. Her emerald eyes hardened, the fear forcibly compartmentalized behind a wall of furious resolve. She had to be the one to get them out of this. She had to be the apex predator of their little group. If not to save her own skin, then to force her team to survive through sheer willpower.

"He will not accept a failure. If we die in there, he won't even blink," Vanessa said, her mind already viciously working every possible angle, every loophole, every tactical advantage.

She looked up at the towering city around them, the beautiful streets, the opulent and heavily fortified High City looming imperiously over them. And there standing in the center of it all, piercing the sky like a dark spear, stood the monolithic fortress tower of the man who literally owned them.

"Lana's... Lana's still at the hospital with Carmen," Sarah stated weakly, taking another fearful step back as if Vanessa's harsh words possessed physical weight that was crushing her. "They're still teaching the new healers the basics."

Vanessa's previous ambition surged back to the surface. It was no longer manifesting as a desire for a man's sexual attention or physical protection, but rather as a need for absolute control over a situation rapidly spiraling into madness.

"We go to the tower. Right fucking now," Vanessa commanded.

"We have mere hours until that fanatic Iris finishes her bloody massacre. We will use every single second of that time. We will interrogate the staff, we will check the logs, and we will find out absolutely everything we can about what nightmare lays waiting behind that green gate."

Her voice was sharp as a razor, laced with a authority that surprised even herself. It was the voice of a project manager faced with an impossible deadline, preparing to push her team to the absolute brink of psychological and physical collapse just for a chance of surviving the coming slaughter.

"Pull yourself together, Sarah," Vanessa snarled, grabbing the blonde fiercely by the shoulders, her nails biting painfully into the flesh. "We are not dying today. And we are sure as hell not giving him the satisfaction of failing."
