The turquoise light dimmed to a pale, ghostly flicker, barely illuminating the dense, humid fog of Floor 3, before it suddenly surged back to an almost blinding, hypnotic intensity. Searanox stood completely paralyzed, rooted in the sucking mud only a single meter away from its unknown source. He was entirely unable to discern what biological or magical mechanism produced the glow—nor did his compromised mind care to know. His enhanced eyes remained completely locked on the shifting, fluid light with an unnatural, unwavering focus. The oppressive, terrifying reality of the monster-infested swamp, the thick, brackish scent of decay, and the ever-present danger had all faded into absolute insignificance. Within his manipulated consciousness, the light was the only thing that mattered. It was everything.

Another sluggish, dragging step brought him closer, his heavy boots pulling free from the muck with a soft squelch. Now, there was only half a meter between him and the mesmerizing, swaying luminescence. His arms, usually tense and ready to draw his magitech rifle at a moment's notice, hung completely slack and useless at his sides. His physical movements were eerily smooth, yet entirely lacking their usual sharp, calculated martial grace. An artificial, deeply soothing warmth permeated his entire physical body. It started as a blooming sensation in the center of his chest and slowly spread outward, flowing down through his veins to his toes and the tips of his armored fingers. It felt profoundly right. It felt like absolute sanctuary.

With one final, heavy step, the light abruptly ceased its rhythmic, swaying bob. It hung perfectly motionless in the heavy, stagnant air for a prolonged, breathless second. Then, without any warning, its vibrant glow began to rapidly recede, dimming to a dull spark. Several seconds later, the beautiful, comforting light was extinguished entirely, plunging the immediate area beneath the massive mangrove roots back into deep, suffocating darkness.

The comforting, artificial warmth that had swaddled his mind vanished instantly, violently replaced by a soul-crushing, icy sensation of primal dread. His vision quickly recalibrated to the sudden darkness, clearing just in time to reveal a towering wall of nearly translucent, needle-like teeth. They glistened with thick, viscous moisture in the pale, silvery moonlight that managed to filter through the dense mangrove canopy above.

Before his sluggish, recovering mind could fully process the horrifying sight, the wall of teeth parted. The space before him transformed into a cavernous, dark maw filled with hundreds of those meter-long, crystalline needles. The colossal ambush predator, an apex beast of the swamp finally lunged forward.

Searanox desperately tried to throw his weight backward, attempting to leap clear to create some desperate measure of distance between himself and the incoming wall of spikes. But his physical reaction was agonizingly slow. The residual sluggishness of the hypnotic trance betrayed him. The beast had already closed the minuscule gap. Its massive, powerful jaws slammed shut, its needle-like teeth sinking viciously into his left side and catching his left arm in the process.

The heavy, reinforced plating of his magitech armor groaned and shrieked under the immense, crushing pressure. Some of the beast's translucent, crystalline needles snapped and broke against the high-density metal, sending sharp shards flying into the mud. But the armor could not withstand the sheer kinetic force of the bite. The rest of the jagged teeth pierced straight through, violently shattering the thick metallic plates that protected his arm from the hand up to the shoulder joint.

A wet, sickening crunch echoed loudly through the stagnant swamp air as the creature's monstrous jaws clamped shut, tearing deeply into the soft flesh of his side. The resulting pain was indescribable—a white-hot, all-consuming agony that completely short-circuited his nervous system, mirroring how the turquoise light had consumed his mind just moments before. His magitech armor continued to groan and buckle, the horrific sound of advanced alloys yielding to impossible biological force mixing with the wet, gruesome tearing of his own muscle and tissue.

With a single, violently abrupt shake of its massive head, the beast casually flung him aside like a broken doll. The subsequent impact against the muddy banks was sickening. A violent chorus of snapping ribs and tearing flesh echoed in his ears, a traumatic injury that barely registered through the blinding, white-hot haze of absolute agony clouding his brain. The entire brutal exchange had happened in a matter of seconds. It was a timeframe that would have normally been more than enough for his drone escort to react, intercept, and deploy energy barriers.

In the split second he was airborne, sent flying through the humid air by the beast's toss, his panicked mind raced frantically through the hazy, dreamlike moments leading up to the attack. The horrifying realization hit him with the force of a blow. He vividly remembered mentally dismissing his entire drone fleet. He remembered their comforting presence winking out, one by one, dissolving into sparks as he had mindlessly walked toward the mesmerizing turquoise light. He had been so utterly captivated, so completely enslaved by the lure's glow, that he had manually, willingly deactivated his own multi-layered defense system.

Now, he was paying the ultimate price for that lapse. There was only the blinding, throbbing pain coursing relentlessly through every single fiber of his being. It was accompanied by the overwhelming, terrifying sensation of hot blood rapidly pouring from the massive, ragged puncture wounds in his left side. As he lay pinned in the cold mud, gasping for air, he felt like he was literally drowning in his own blood.

From the blurry corner of his failing vision, he watched the massive, six-limbed amphibian predator correct its stance and begin its slow, deliberate advance toward his crippled form. Its eyes were cold and dead, entirely focused on its next meal. As his eyes tracked the monster, he also saw the interface of his system display at the bottom of his vision.

His Tech Points count glared back at him.

[TP: 33]

It was barely enough to summon a tiny handful of basic units that would be utterly, laughably useless against a heavily armored apex predator of this size and level.

The beast took another deliberate, earth-shaking step forward. Its heavy feet sank deep into the squelching mud as it systematically closed the remaining distance to claim its kill.

Searanox screamed internally, a desperate, silent plea for his system to regenerate his TP faster, for his drones to somehow miraculously appear and save him. But what actually answered his desperate plea was entirely unexpected.

A heavy, thunderous thud violently broke the swamp's heavy silence. It was immediately followed by a high-pitched, incredibly pained wail and a bout of frantic, violent thrashing from the massive beast. Searanox blinked through the pain. From the creature's thick, armored flank now protruded a massive, crude arrow. The projectile was almost as thick as Searanox's own armored arm. It certainly hadn't been there a mere moment ago.

Before his shock-addled brain could even begin to process this sudden intervention, the sharp, whistling sound of violently displaced air rushed through the air. This was instantly followed by another solid, meaty thud as a second massive arrow embedded itself deep into the creature's opposite flank, driving the beast down to its knees.

With his focus entirely broken and his grim survival calculations completely interrupted, Searanox heard a new sound joining the fray. It was a heavy, rhythmic thumping, a synchronized pounding of multiple heavy footfalls rapidly drawing closer through the dense swamp foliage.

Gritting his teeth against the searing agony in his side, Searanox forced his neck to turn. With immense difficulty, he managed to shift his gaze toward the source of the approaching sound. Bursting through the thick tangle of ancient mangrove trees emerged a humanoid figure. It was impossibly tall, easily standing over three meters. Its skin was an unnatural, ashen grey, heavily adorned with strange tribal markings that pulsed with a faint energy. Long, dark, stringy hair fell wildly over a featureless, bone-white mask that completely obscured its face. The figure's movements were oddly rhythmic.

Beside the towering archer, four other identical figures burst from the tree line, their mounts splashing violently through the shallow, murky water.

The amphibian beast's predatory attention shifted instantly and entirely away from Searanox's bleeding form, fixating on these massive new arrivals. It let out a guttural roar, pushed itself violently forward, and dug its six powerful limbs deep into the mud as it launched itself directly toward the fresh, larger threats.

To Searanox, lying half-dead in the mud, time itself seemed to slow down to a crawl as the chaotic melee unfolded before his eyes.

The towering archer casually reached back, drawing another massive, spear-like arrow from a heavy leather quiver slung across its broad back. A moment later, the bowstring twanged with the force of a ballista, and the projectile flew true.

The beast released an ear-piercing, rattling screech as the arrow found its mark. The screech was immediately answered by a chorus of deep, resonant wails from behind the five tall figures now positioned strategically between the archer and their massive target.

The six-limbed beast charged with reckless abandon, its massive, armored body plowing violently through the muddy water and snapping smaller roots like twigs. The two ashen figures at the very front of the formation immediately lowered their centers of gravity, leaning heavily forward on the strange mounts they rode. As they broke into the clearing, Searanox finally got a clear look at their steeds. He watched in awe as massive, eight-legged amphibian creatures charged forward, their powerful legs churning the mud. Their grey-skinned riders simultaneously raised crude, jagged bone spears, bracing for the inevitable, brutal impact.

In that brief moment of chaotic distraction, Searanox capitalized on his only chance. He didn't care what exactly was happening, nor did he care who or what these strange, masked newcomers were. They were providing the desperately needed distraction he required to survive. Accessing his slowly regenerating TP pool, he commanded his skill to act.

An Intermediate Healing Drone materialized in a sudden, brief flicker of bright blue light right beside his head. Moments later, the drone's emitters activated, bathing the bloody, muddy ground and his ruined side in a continuous, pulsing green glow.

He could literally feel his torn flesh, shattered ribs, and ruptured organs beginning to actively knit back together under the drone's potent magical influence. The drones healing was incredibly powerful; the blinding pain immediately began to recede to a dull ache, and it took only seconds before his erratic, panicked breathing normalized once again.

But just as his body was starting to successfully mend, a devastatingly heavy metallic impact rang out directly above his head. From the side of the silver, octahedron-shaped healing drone now protruded a thick, crude arrow, having pierced straight through the advanced magitech chassis. The sheer kinetic impact of the massive projectile violently deformed the drone's casing and sent it flying several meters away into the muck. The soothing, life-saving healing effect stopped instantly, plunging Searanox back into the cold reality of his injuries.

The ruined drone fell into the swamp water, instantly dissolving into a shower of sparks just as it hit the mud, returning to the system. Searanox turned his head slightly. Its attacker the one wielding a heavy, reinforced bow crafted from thick monster bone casually lowered its weapon after taking the shot.

Meanwhile, the spear-wielding riders crashed head-on into the massive six-limbed beast with the unstoppable kinetic force of a battering ram. The crude bone spears shattered completely against the monster's thick, armored hide, sending bone shrapnel flying. However, the combined, overwhelming momentum of the charging mounts was enough to severely stagger the massive amphibian, forcing it back several meters. The beast recovered instantly and thrashed wildly. Its cavernous maw opened wide, and those terrifying needle-like teeth sank deeply into the neck of one of the eight-legged mounts, swallowing its rider in the process.

A horrifying, sickening crunch echoed across the entire swamp as the creature's immense jaws crushed the mount's cervical spine. The grey-skinned rider let out a furious, echoing wail as its eight-legged steed convulsed violently underneath it, spraying dark blood into the water before collapsing heavily into the mud. Still, the other riders did not falter; they ruthlessly pressed their attack, their remaining spears stabbing repeatedly and deeply into the beast's thick, scaly hide. They were proving to be significantly more than just a minor annoyance to the apex beast.

And yet, despite the barrage of spears and ballista-like arrows, the beast simply did not go down.

`Could I have killed that thing before it reached me if my drones were active?`

The grim question ricocheted loudly through his mind. His internal debate was suddenly interrupted as a familiar, mesmerizing flash of pale turquoise light abruptly illuminated the chaotic battlefield, washing over the attacking riders.

The six-limbed beast had reactivated its hypnotic lure.

Instantly, one of the charging grey-skinned riders froze completely mid-stride. Its long, deadly bone spear drooped harmlessly toward the mud as the rider's featureless mask locked onto the swaying light. The rider was entirely captivated, just as Searanox had been. But before the hypnotized warrior could be attacked by the beast, another rider situated right beside it swung the blunt haft of its own heavy weapon in a wide arc. The blow struck the frozen companion squarely in the chest with bone-shattering force, violently knocking the rider out of the trance.

`They're attacking each other to break the effect?` Searanox realized, his mind racing to process the alien tactics.

The eight-legged mounted creature beneath the freshly struck rider reared up in surprise, its multiple legs frantically scrabbling at the humid air before it crashed heavily back down to the soft earth. Snapping out of its daze, the struck rider immediately snapped its spear back to a ready, aggressive position, plunging it forcefully forward into the amphibian beast's thick, resistant hide once again.

Searanox continued to lie perfectly motionless in the mud, his head being the only part of his broken body he had dared to move so far. These tribal entities were definitely not here to help him—that much was abundantly certain. The archer had targeted and destroyed his healing drone the absolute instant it had appeared on the battlefield.

He monitored his interface. As his TP slowly but steadily ticked upward, he formulated a new, desperate plan. He summoned another Intermediate Healing Drone, but this time, he simultaneously spent the extra points to deploy an Intermediate Defensive Drone right alongside it.

The comforting, warm green light washed over the bloody mud where Searanox lay once more. The healing drone's concentrated rays immediately resumed the arduous process of stitching his severe, gaping wounds together. But just as the regenerative, life-saving glow took firm hold of his body, the sharp whistling of displaced air returned. Another massive arrow sliced rapidly through the swamp air.

It slammed violently into the defensive drone's projected energy barrier. The transparent, hexagonal shield flared brilliantly for a fraction of a second before completely shattering under the heavy, armor-piercing impact of the projectile.

While three of the remaining riders continued their brutal, close-quarters assault on the thrashing six-limbed beast, the archer calmly nocked and loosed yet another arrow directly in Searanox's direction. This new projectile struck the second layer of the defensive drone's barrier, completely collapsing the field and leaving both hovering drones entirely exposed to physical harm.

Searanox's reflexes fired. In a sudden, preemptive flash of blue light, he manually commanded both drones to dissolve back into his inventory, saving them from total destruction.

They vanished into nothingness mere instants before a third, devastating arrow violently pierced the space where the mechanical units had been hovering moments before. The massive projectile's overwhelming momentum carried it cleanly through the dissipating shower of blue sparks, burying itself deeply into a nearby tree with a thunderous impact.
