[Chapter 192: The Wolves of the Spire]
The swirling blue vortex of the dungeon portal deposited them into a world of freezing mist and ancient decay. The Courtyard of the Dead was a sprawling, melancholic expanse that defied the bright, humming reality of the city they had just left behind. Here, the air carried the potent, suffocating stench of turned earth and centuries of rot. A thick, unnatural grey fog coiled around crumbling stone headstones like a nest of living, breathing serpents, obscuring the horizon and dampening all sound.
Gareth took a deep breath, letting the icy air fill his lungs. He was a wiry man in his early thirties, his armor meticulously maintained, the silver insignia of a Androxis pinned proudly to his chest. He turned to the group huddled nervously behind him.
"Alright, listen up," Gareth's voice was firm but reassuring, cutting through the silence of the graveyard. "Stay within the perimeter. Vorn takes the vanguard. Rik will watch our flanks. Lila is on support. Do not step past the frontline, do not touch the gravestones, and if you hear a rattling sound, drop to a crouch. We are here to get you your Bronze rank safely, but you need to follow my instructions to the letter."
The four clients nodded vigorously. They were a ragtag bunch, a middle-aged baker who had lost his shop during the Integration, a young mother holding a rusted iron dagger with trembling hands, and two teenage boys who looked like they had barely survived the journey to the city of Androxis. They had pooled their meager resources to hire the Wolves of the Spire, desperate for the System rank that would grant them basic citizenship and safety within the city walls.
"We trust you, Gareth," the baker said, his voice tight with anxiety. "Just... get us through."
"That is what you hired us for," Gareth replied with a confident smile. He unhooked the massive, system-bought broadaxe from his back. The heavy steel head gleamed with a faint, magical luminescence. "Formation, Wolves! Let's clear a path."
They moved out with practiced precision. Vorn, a massive brute of a man with a heavily scarred face, took the lead. His weapon was a towering iron mace, a brutal instrument of blunt force. Rik, possessing a leaner, more agile build, darted along the edges of the fog, his twin short swords drawn. At the rear, walking closely with the terrified clients, was Lila. She wore simple, clean robes, her hands loosely gripping a smooth wooden staff. Her eyes were focused, constantly scanning the condition of her team, ready to channel her mana at a moment's notice.
The initial skirmishes were swift and decisive. As the group pushed deeper into the misty graveyard, the soft, loamy ground began to churn. Skeletal hands burst from the soil, followed by the shambling, groaning forms of the Lesser Undead.
"Contact front!" Vorn bellowed.
A trio of rotting corpses, their eyes glowing with a malevolent light, lunged toward the party. Vorn did not flinch. He stepped into the charge, swinging his heavy iron mace in a brutal, crushing arc. The weapon collided with the first monster's chest, shattering its brittle ribcage and sending fragments of bone skittering across the dead grass. Before the other two could react, Gareth vaulted off a nearby tombstone. His broadaxe was a blur of silver motion. He cleaved the second monster in half with a sickening crunch, using the momentum to spin and drive the haft of his weapon into the third creature's skull.
"Keep moving!" Gareth commanded, shaking the dark, viscous fluid from his blade. "Don't let them box us in!"
The clients scrambled forward, their eyes wide with awe and terror. The young mother stumbled over an exposed root, crying out as a skeletal hand grabbed her ankle from beneath the dirt.
In a flash, Rik was there. His short sword flashed in the dim light, severing the bony appendage at the wrist. He offered the woman a hand, his face set in an easy, comforting grin. "Careful now, ma'am. The ground here has a nasty habit of grabbing back. Stay close to me."
"Thank you," she gasped, pulling herself up. "Thank you so much."
For the next two hours, the Wolves of the Spire demonstrated exactly why their services were so highly sought after in the outer districts of Androxis. They operated as a flawless, synchronized unit. When the towering form of the Grave Warden came into view, the team didn't panic.
The Grave Warden swung a massive halberd, a weapon easily capable of cutting Vorn in two. Vorn caught the blow on the reinforced shaft of his mace, his boots sliding back several inches in the dirt as he absorbed the kinetic impact.
"Lila!" Gareth shouted, flanking the behemoth.
From the rear, Lila raised her staff. A warm, brilliant green light flared at the tip. She channeled her mana, sending a pulse of healing energy directly into Vorn. The brute's straining muscles bulged, the System's magic instantly replenishing his depleted stamina and closing the minor lacerations on his body.
Empowered, Vorn shoved the Warden back. Gareth seized the opening. He activated a System Skill—Heavy Cleave. His broadaxe ignited with a searing white aura. He leaped into the air and brought the weapon down with the force of a falling meteor, striking the Warden directly at the base of its neck. The explosive impact shattered the creature's spine. It collapsed into a mountain of dust and twisted iron.
"Clear!" Rik called out, finishing off the last ghoul.
Gareth leaned on his axe, breathing heavily, but smiling. He turned to the clients, whose system interfaces were suddenly glowing with notifications.
"Check your logs," Gareth instructed, his tone warm and congratulatory. "The Dungeon should have pushed all of you over the threshold."
The teenage boys cheered aloud. "Level three!" one of them shouted, pulling up his blue, holographic display. "And we are Bronze rank! It actually worked!"
The baker fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands as tears of profound relief streamed down his dirty cheeks. "Safe. I can actually stay inside the city now." He looked up at Gareth, his eyes shining with gratitude. "You saved our lives. I don't know how to repay you."
"Your initial fee covers it all, friend," Gareth said, offering the man a hand and pulling him to his feet. "The Wolves of the Spire pride ourselves on our success rate. We know how brutal the Integration was for people who didn't get combat classes. We're just doing our part to help the city stabilize."
They gathered the meager loot and made their way back to the extraction portal. When they stepped through the swirling blue light, the transition was jarring. They traded the cold, dead mist for the bright, bustling expanse of the Spire's Atrium.
The massive hall was packed with hundreds of heavily armored adventurers and the constant hum of teams shouting out to recruit members to their team. The clients parted ways with the Wolves, bowing and offering endless streams of gratitude before rushing off to the central tower to register for citizenship.
Gareth watched them go, his posture relaxed, his expression satisfied. He led his team out of the Atrium and into the pristine, violet-lit streets of Androxis. They walked in comfortable silence until they reached their headquarters, a solid, two-story stone building.
Inside, the room was warm, smelling of roasted meat and alcohol. Several other members of the Wolves were already there, laughing and sharing stories of their own dives.
Rik pulled up a chair next to Gareth, pouring two wooden cups of hard liquor. "Another flawless run. The word of mouth on our escort services is spreading like wildfire through the city."
Gareth took a slow sip, nodding. "Good. The more people we help, the stronger the city gets. But we need to maintain our standards." He looked around the room, his voice taking on the authoritative cadence of a seasoned commander. "As we take on more clients, the risks increase."
Vorn grunted in agreement, tearing into a leg of roasted fowl. "Some of the new ones are spooked easily. One panic attack during a boss fight and they could get us all killed."
"Which is exactly why the contracts remain non-negotiable," Gareth stated firmly. He set his cup down, looking at his officers. "I know some people complain about the strict liability clauses and the absolute obedience mandates we require them to sign before a dive. But today is proof of why we do it. If that mother had broken formation and run when the ghoul grabbed her, she would have pulled aggro from the entire western quadrant."
"Agreed," Rik said. "The System-enforced Geas is the only way to ensure they follow our commands in the heat of battle. It's for their own protection." a slight quite chuckle followed.
"Exactly," Gareth smiled, the picture of a responsible leader. "We offer salvation from the slums, but we cannot afford wildcards. We bind them to our commands so that everyone comes home alive. Tomorrow, we open recruitment again. Find the ones who need our help the most. The unprotected, the families, the crafters. Bring them in, explain the rules, and let's get them through the Spire."
The men nodded, raising their cups in a toast to their continued success, their consciences perfectly clear as they prepared to offer more desperate souls a safe path through the darkness.
