[Chapter 189. The Belly of the Beast]
Searanox’s augmented gaze flicked toward the disturbed ground where the churning tracks had abruptly ended. For a single heartbeat, the endless desert fell silent. The stillness was broken only by the hollow whistle of the dry wind sweeping across the desolate courtyard. Then, as if responding to an unseen cue, the bone-white sand beneath his heavy boots heaved and ruptured.
The earth erupted. A geyser of kinetic force shattered the dune, launching a thick shroud of abrasive grit, pulverized sandstone, and ancient dust into the stifling air. The cloud eclipsed the blinding sun and choked his vision. Within the swirling center of that maelstrom, a colossal serpentine form materialized, a mountain of dense muscle moving with terrifying, fluid grace toward his compromised position.
Before Searanox could regain his footing or secure a clear line of sight, ingrained combat instincts seized control of his motor functions. He raised his heavy rifle and fired blind into the heart of the roiling haze.
The concentrated violet beam pierced the cloud. The superheated air screamed as the energy path ionized the surrounding dust particles, turning them into a shower of microscopic glass shards. A guttural, earth-shaking howl of agony echoed through the crumbling stone ruins a fraction of a second before the brilliant beam made devastating contact with the looming shadow.
The enraged shape surged forward, bursting from the falling veil of sand like a runaway locomotive.
A nightmare of subterranean biological engineering greeted his eyes. A cavernous maw unhinged, revealing rows of jagged teeth and twin translucent fangs resting against the upper jaw. The deadly appendages dripped a clear, viscous fluid that hissed and smoked upon striking the hot desert sand.
Searanox reacted with a desperate burst of physical agility. He pushed off the shifting ground, utilizing his new combat suit to catapult his body backward through the heavy air just as the creature’s head descended.
The armored jaw snapped shut with a bone-jarring thud on the exact spot where he had stood a millisecond prior, sending a shockwave through the dune. Two slitted eyes—a piercing, luminescent gold—fixed upon him. They brimmed with a primitive malice born from centuries of unbroken hunting.
The beast’s bus-sized head bore thick, overlapping scales, crowned with dozens of wicked, thorn-like horns sweeping back toward its neck. Down its armored throat, a craterous wound smoked and oozed boiling red fluids. He had aimed for the central brain casing, but the obscuring sandstorm had reduced his attack to a glancing blow against its nearly impenetrable hide.

The snake-like beast moved with a whiplash speed that defied its massive bulk. Its head pulled free from the cratered earth, shedding a waterfall of white grit. An echoing, supersonic crack followed as its long, armored tail lashed out from the flank.
The appendage struck Searanox’s torso with the force of a falling redwood tree. Searanox crashed into the steep, unyielding face of a distant sand dune. He gasped for air, his lungs paralyzed by the blunt force trauma. He felt the sickening, internal grind of broken bone against soft tissue; several of his lower ribs had splintered.
He struggled to raise his heavy rifle once more, his vision swimming with dark spots. Before he could squeeze the trigger, the Sand-Wyrm Matriarch arched its scaled back. It dove headfirst straight into the earth, plunging through the solid ground as if swimming through liquid water. It vanished beneath the vast ocean of sand.
The ruined clearing returned to a haunting stillness. Nothing remained but the deep, crater-like drag tracks he had investigated earlier.
His personal healing drone a small, advanced silver octahedron materialized above him in a flash of blue light. It descended, projecting a pulsing emerald glow that felt soothing against the searing heat of the desert sun. It hovered over his battered chest. He felt the magical mending energy seeping through his heavy coat and into his damaged skin. The drone went to work, knitting the fractured ribs back together with an unnerving, itching efficiency.
Searanox gritted his teeth, suppressing a cold, simmering fury building within his chest.
The beast hadn’t retreated. It was relocating. It had burrowed deep, utilizing the environment as both a weapon and a shield. It was circling him beneath the surface. The seismic vibrations were faint but distinct. A rhythmic, thrumming tremor traveling up through the packed dunes and into the soles of his boots.
He pushed himself back to his feet, his labored breath evening out as the hovering healing drone finished its work and dissolved back into his drone space.
The world darkened.
A moment ago, the white-hot sky had been empty of clouds. Now, a massive shadow loomed over him. He lifted his gaze. The Matriarch’s tooth-filled head silhouetted against the blinding glare of the sun, diving from high above after launching itself out of the dune behind his position.
Searanox attempted to jump away, but the unstable sand gave way beneath his boots, anchoring him in place. The cavernous jaws closed around him, swallowing his entire body whole, along with a suffocating ton of displaced desert sand.
Trapped within the beast’s suffocating maw, Searanox felt the world spin. He slid backward down a damp, muscular tunnel. Moments later, his downward trajectory stopped. He felt his armored boots getting crushed from all sides with hydraulic force as the massive throat muscles constricted around his lower body.
He knew the biological mechanism at play: the Sand-Wyrm Matriarch intended to crush his physical form and digest him alive within its acidic internal chambers.
`Good.` Searanox thought with a cold cynicism as the putrid smell of rotting meat and potent stomach acid assaulted his senses. `Now I don't have to worry about missing the head.`
With his legs pinned deep down its crushing throat, he angled his arms, pointing the barrel of his Magitech rifle toward the roof of the beast's mouth.
A deep, unstable violet glow filled the cramped, lightless space. The weapon hummed with an overcharged frequency. He funneled a massive sum of energy directly into the rifle.
A destructive beam of pure, concentrated plasma erupted from the barrel. The overcharged energy burned straight through the soft, vulnerable inner linings of the Matriarch’s maw. It melted through tissue, bone, and brain matter, blasting a clean hole through the very top of its scaled skull.
The agonizing pressure squeezing his legs vanished as the creature's central nervous system was obliterated. The massive interior of the beast shuddered. The gargantuan muscular body convulsed in a final, tectonic death throe, tossing Searanox against the cramped walls. His armored body was thrown to the side, coated in foul, viscous fluids, as white-hot sunlight streamed into the ruined throat from the gaping, smoking hole he had blasted through its head.

Searanox clawed his way out of the smoking, cauterized wound in the creature’s shattered skull, tumbling back down into the scorching desert heat. His fluid-soaked body emerged from the ruined corpse just as it began to break down. The massive, serpentine form dissolved into thousands of floating, luminescent motes of light-blue, drifting upward into the white sky like fading embers.
As the last glimmers of energy faded from the colossal carcass, a deep, resonant mechanical hum emanated from the dark, skeletal pyramid resting in the center of the ancient stone ruins. The greenish-blue magical light trapped within its core intensified, pulsing like a dying star, before erupting outward in a sweeping wave of transparent kinetic energy that washed over the desert floor.
Simultaneously, a towering pillar of solid green light shot into the sky, acting as a visible beacon across the vast desert.
The white sand at his feet shifted and churned, driven by an ancient, unseen mechanical force operating deep below. A section of the pyramid floor, spanning several meters, began to sink. With a deafening groan of stressed stone and grinding machinery, a circular platform rose from the center of the buried ruins, carved from the same mysterious rock as the surrounding architecture.
The drifting motes of pale light that had comprised the Matriarch’s body coalesced into a single, concentrated point on the sand, forming a heavy chest at the precise location where the giant beast had died.
Before him stood a simple chest constructed of dark wood. Curiously, it lacked the intricate silver engravings that had decorated the reward chest on the previous floor.
`Fucking Christ. If this is how the next dungeons scale, many Awakened are going to die.` He thought grimly. He used the thick fabric of his heavy coat to wipe the foul monster grime and abrasive sand from his face, moving methodically toward the physical reward.
His gauntleted hands flipped the heavy wooden lid open. Inside the dim interior, resting on a pristine bed of dark red velvet, he saw a single, heavy gold coin resting next to a small glowing red crystal.
The valuable contents of the plain chest vanished into his spatial ring with a focused thought.
He turned his attention toward the humming miniature pyramid in the distance. With a slow, exhausted gait, he crossed the scorching courtyard and arrived at the foot of the ancient structure. In its absolute center stood a familiar sight: a circle of weathered stone pillars surrounding a raised, inscribed dais.
As his bare hand touched the glowing, pulsating magical stone resting in the center of the dais, his entire field of vision shifted.
The physical transition battered his senses. Where there had once been the blinding, white-hot glare of the merciless desert sun and the endless expanse of parched sand, he found a sudden, biting breeze that cut right through his clothing. The surrounding air grew thick and heavy with the pungent scent of rotting salt and the distant, rhythmic thunder of ocean waves crashing against unseen rocks beneath a dark, starless sky.
The oppressive, boiling heat of the second floor dissolved, replaced by the chilling dampness of a nocturnal sea. Searanox adjusted the high collar of his heavy coat against the sudden cold, his eyes analyzing the profound darkness surrounding him.
Tall, twisted trees loomed before him. Their massive, gnarled roots submerged in dark, brackish water, creating a thick, nearly impenetrable canopy high above that blocked the meager ambient moonlight filtering down from the sky. The ground beneath his boots formed a treacherous, sucking mixture of deep black mud and interwoven wooden roots, creating a complex, unstable terrain fraught with trip hazards.
His senses took in the scene in a fraction of a second—the suffocating humidity, the potent scent of aquatic decay, and the faint, unsettling skittering sounds echoing from the shadows hidden within the root structures.
He had arrived on the third floor of the Gates of Tartarus: a sprawling, claustrophobic, nightmarish mangrove swamp trapped in perpetual midnight.
Searanox let out a long, slow breath, watching his warm exhalation turn to white mist in the damp, chilling air.
"Welcome to Florida."
