Searanox stepped fully into the light cast by the Labyrinth's rewards, his armored boots crunching softly against the cavern floor. He opened the heavy wooden chest, and his gaze fell immediately onto the two solid gold coins lying on the dark, pristine velvet inside. His gauntleted hand moved smoothly over the currency, and they vanished in a familiar flash of pale blue light, depositing directly into his storage ring. Right next to where the coins had rested lay a heavy, rectangular piece of dark iron. Engraved into its cold metallic surface was the number fifteen, etched in a bold, glowing golden font.

He picked up the familiar token, instantly recognizing its purpose, and mentally activated the class equipment voucher. Just as it had during his previous use, a massive, scrolling list of items flashed into his vision, filling the dim subterranean cavern.

From these thousands of potential items, Searanox was looking for one very specific piece of gear. Unlike the last time he had used an equipment voucher where he had settled for a generic, functional piece. This specific voucher contained exactly what he needed to optimize his current build.

He made his selection. The dark iron voucher instantly dissolved into a shower of golden light, re-coalescing in the air before him to transform into a complete set of dark, highly specialized clothing. On second glance, it wasn't just a simple set of garments, but one interconnected, comprehensive piece a full-body combat suit that looked akin to a heavily armored version of a hazmat suit, albeit without its bulky hood.

The fabric was woven from advanced, cut-resistant polymers and lined with the exact same geometric, dark-grey patterns that decorated his coat. The plates of matte-black, energy-dispersing metal were significantly larger and thicker on the torso, chest, and shoulders, tapering down the legs into articulated segments to ensure enhanced, unimpeded mobility. He carefully noted the integrated magitech conduits woven directly through the inner fabric a complex, bioluminescent nervous system for the armor. It was a clear, massive step up from his previous, system-store-bought protection.

─ NAME: Medium Armored Combat Suit

─ TYPE: Armor

─ RARITY: Rare

─ LEVEL: 15

─ DESCRIPTION: Created by a master technomancer who sought to push the boundaries of what was physically possible. This suit represents a standard tier of elite equipment from the distant forge world of Kormidas XVI, and is usually reserved exclusively for the high city guard and the elite private armies of the various techno-corporations. It meticulously prioritizes a perfect balance between personal kinetic protection and the unimpeded, frictionless operation of class-specific technomantic abilities.

He wasted no time exchanging his worn-out, battle-scuffed armor for the new suit. The old gear vanished into his storage with a simple thought, leaving him briefly exposed to the chill of the cavern. As he pulled on the new combat suit, it felt unnaturally, beautifully light. It sealed itself around his frame with a soft, satisfying series of mechanical clicks, seamlessly interlocking with the existing ports on his gauntlets and his heavy coat.

A sudden, shockingly cool sensation spread through his underlying musculature as the integrated magitech conduits detected his bio-signature and pulsed to life with a faint, steady violet light. A few flashes later the soft light was gone, returning to its prior dark state. He moved his limbs one by one, rolling his shoulders and stretching his legs, thoroughly testing the enhanced mobility. The suit responded perfectly, acting like a second layer of mechanized skin. Every single motion was fluid, sharp, and completely unencumbered. It was a vast, undeniable improvement over the cumbersome, mass-produced protection he had worn until now.

Satisfied with the substantial upgrade to his survivability, he turned his attention away from his inventory and approached the pulsing green glow deeper down the chamber.

He navigated through the final maze of petrified roots and arrived at the source of the emerald light. Before him stood a strange, ancient structure that resembled an open three sided pyramid. It possessed no walls, leaving only the thick, polished stone edges that angled upward to merge into a sharp, pointed top, from which the intense green light pulled directly upward, illuminating the ceiling of the underground chamber.

In the exact center of this skeletal pyramid stood a solid, four-sided stone spike that reached to his hips. It was glowing violently with subtle, geometric green runes that ran in vertical lines along its outer sides, pulsing in time with the light from above.

His hand reached out to initiate the sequence, but before his fingers could make physical contact with the stone, his vision was interrupted by another system prompt.

[System Notification]

─ [Advance to 2nd Floor]

─ [Return to Androxis]

He dismissed the warning window without a second thought and selected the option to enter the second floor.

The world dissolved instantly into a deafening vortex of swirling green and blue energy a blinding, chaotic rush that made his brain question the very laws of physics. Gravity completely lost its meaning, his stomach dropping as if he were falling through an endless void. For a terrifying split second, he felt as if his entire physical form was being aggressively pulled apart and reassembled at a molecular level, scattered across dimensions, before he finally found himself standing firmly on solid ground once more.

The oppressive, dry heat of the first floor’s rocky plateau was entirely gone. It had been replaced by an even more oppressive, relentlessly agonizing heat that felt like opening the door to a blast furnace.

Sunlight harsh and unforgiving, bleached the entire landscape into a stark, painful monochrome of white-hot glare. Even standing behind the heavily polarized, UV-resistant lenses of his sunglasses, the ambient light was agonizingly intense. He was forced to squint, his Dhampir enhanced pupils struggling violently to adjust to the sudden, blinding radiation bouncing off the environment.

Before him stretched an endless, rolling expanse of scorched, bone-white sand and jagged, calcified rock that shimmered and danced under a merciless, fixed sun. The sky above was not the familiar blue of the outside world, nor the hazy red of the first floor; it was a washed-out, blinding white dome that seemed to physically hum with stored thermal energy.

The second floor of the Gates of Tartarus had manifested as a vast, open-world desert, and the entrance portal through which he had just stepped was already half-buried by a massive, shifting sand dune. The structure's ornate stone was only partially visible above the crest of the sand, looking like the tragic, forgotten ruins of a lost civilization slowly being swallowed by the earth.

The silence here was absolute, profound, and heavy. It was broken only by the low, keening whistle of a dry wind that scoured the vast, empty space, carrying with it the choking scent of baked sand and raw heat.

He took a few cautious steps forward, his heavy boots sinking slightly into the incredibly fine, scorching sand. The sheer, impossible scale of the place was deeply disorienting. There were no natural landmarks, no petrified trees, and no mountains in the distance—only the undulating, blinding dunes that stretched toward a horizon that seemed entirely endless.

He did not proceed blindly into the wasteland. Intelligence was the core of his combat doctrine. With a silent, focused mental command, four Intermediate Reconnaissance Drones materialized around him in flashes of blue. Their sleek, metallic alloy forms caught the brutal sunlight immediately, casting sharp, dancing reflections across the pale sand. They fanned out in a wide, sweeping search pattern, racing across the dunes in four different directions with the soft, high-pitched whine of their thrusters.

For several tense minutes, Searanox stood perfectly still, processing the telemetry feeds. They reported absolutely nothing but an endless, repeating, fractal landscape of sand, heat-haze, and rock.

Then, the data changed drastically.

From the shared perspective of the drones, Searanox watched as the blindingly white sky above them suddenly darkened. Huge, jagged shadows flickered across the sand, growing larger and more defined with terrifying speed.

Two dark, massive shapes appearing exactly like giant birds woven entirely from smoldering ash, volcanic glass, and dying cinders. They dropped from the bleached sky in a near-vertical, high-speed dive. Their aerodynamic forms were outlined in trailing, glowing embers that left thick streaks of black smoke in the stagnant air. Their eyes glowed like hot, furious coals.

They slammed into the reconnaissance drones with the devastating kinetic force of falling meteors. The impact was violently instantaneous; sparks and shattered drone parts flew in every direction as the drones reinforced alloy chassis buckled and imploded under the crushing pressure of the creatures superheated talons.

Searanox immediately dismissed the severely damaged drones back to his spatial inventory before they could be completely vaporized by the heat, the mental action as effortless and reflexive as breathing. He looked up, shielding his eyes with his forearm, scanning the vast, empty sky for more incoming threats. The two avian predators had already pulled out of their dive and climbed high again, circling lazily in the white haze like patient vultures waiting for their next opportunity to strike the intruder.

He stood there for a few more minutes, analyzing their flight patterns as the oppressive heat began to soak through the thermal lining of his coat. He clicked his tongue in genuine annoyance and de-summoned his remaining recon drones from the field.

`I should have guessed that it wouldn't be as simple as a stroll in the park in here.`

His drones reappeared a few moments later, but he had entirely adjusted his tactical configuration. He thought carefully about the brutal encounter his scouts had just suffered and the speed of the avian strike. This time, for each active Intermediate Recon Drone, a Basic Assault Drone was summoned and paired as a dedicated escort.

The machines hovered around him in a tight, defensive formation before banking sharply and flying off in synchronized pairs. The recon drones were no longer flying at the impressive, vulnerable speeds they had used moments ago to cover ground rapidly; instead, they were purposefully slowed down, tethered to the weapons systems of their armed escorts.

It didn't take long for him to receive the combat data of a small, violent skirmish breaking out in the air high above the eastern dunes.

Once again, the huge, cinder-woven avian beasts tracked the movement and attacked his machines, diving out of the sun with their superheated talons extended for the kill. This time, however, they were not met with defenseless scout armor. The Basic Assault Drones pivoted upward with mechanical perfection, they locked on instantly. They met the diving beasts with bright, continuous crimson beams of concentrated plasma energy.

The heavy beams sliced cleanly through the smoking, flying beasts, cauterizing wings and vaporizing internal ash. The predators shrieked a sound like grinding glass before dropping out of the sky in a chaotic trail of thick black smoke and burning feathers, crashing lifelessly into the dunes below.

Searanox closed his eyes tightly, he couldn't bare another second of the bright, omnidirectional light of the desert still stinging his retinas even behind his closed eyelids. The glare of this floor was a weapon in and of itself.

With a mental flick, he summoned another basic recon drone and positioned it directly in the air, hovering exactly two meters above and slightly behind his right shoulder.

He watched or rather, he remembered experiencing the sensation of himself standing motionless in the shifting sands from a perfect, over-the-shoulder third-person perspective. It was a visual angle that was intimately familiar to him from years of pre-Awakening digital entertainment and virtual reality gaming. Strangely, in this hostile, blindingly bright alien environment, relying on the drone's shielded optical sensors felt infinitely more comfortable and secure than using his own organic sight.

While the sight was familiar the movement was anything but. He moved his arm and a fraction of a second later he got the visual from his drones imprinted memories. It was a sensation that he hated in the past, and which he hated even more now.

`It feels like playing a game with a bad ping.` He scoffed mentally before beginning to test out other movements and even walking.

His first few steps forward were clumsy and uncoordinated as his brain struggled to navigate using the unnatural, displaced angle of his vision. He overstepped a small dune and nearly lost his balance, but his enhanced neurology quickly adapted to the input. He silently thanked his years of hardcore gaming for the ingrained spatial awareness required to fluidly move his physical body while his 'eyes' hovered ten feet behind him in the air.

It took him less than a minute of steady walking to reach the exact coordinates where his drones had first been attacked. Through the drone's feed, he looked down and saw a massive, smoldering avian body partially buried in the white sand, its cinder-feathers still radiating intense heat.

As he focused the drone's advanced vision on the corpse to log the kill, a translucent blue window flickered open in his own mind's eye. The sudden, overlaying appearance of the System window temporarily pulled him out of his tactical trance and distracted him from the drone's environmental feed.

In the bright, artificial darkness of his closed eyes, the window hovered demanding his attention:

[System Notification]

─ NAME: Cinderwing

─ TYPE: Avian

─ VARIANT: Greater

─ LEVEL: 22

`Level 22. The difficulty scaling between floors is steeper than I anticipated.` He noted grimly.

He mentally pushed the window out of his view, dismissing the notification, and returned his full concentration to his drone's-eye view. He began moving slowly over the terrain, the fine sand giving way under every single step, making progress exhausting and slow.

While his paired drones were busy clearing a few more Cinderwings out of the sky across the desert, he turned his tactical focus toward mapping the absolute edge of the floor. The first pair of drones flying north finally reached an invisible, kinetic barrier that abruptly prevented them from flying any further, identical to the walls on the first floor.

A few seconds later, the telemetry confirmed that each pair of drones had reached this exact same invisible wall at the other cardinal directions. Knowing their exact coordinates gave him a perfect, mental topological map of the second floor.

This entire level was significantly larger than the endless red plateau above. In fact by his estimate, it was four times its size. His drones where exactly twenty kilometers apart. Considering that it was another perfect square shaped floor, he was looking at four hundred square meters of sand.

While his mind was heavily occupied with processing the coordinates and calculating the geometric center of the map, the environment around him reacted.

Something massive and silent shifted violently below the sand, just a meter away from where he stood.

A dark, glistening, heavily segmented stinger shot out from underneath the seemingly undisturbed face of the dune, aiming directly at his torso with terrifying, lightning speed. The recon drone hovering above his shoulder caught the blur of movement and flagged the kinetic threat, notifying his brain in a fraction of a millisecond.

Without hesitation, Searanox’s heavily enhanced body moved autonomously. His combat instincts took completely over as he pivoted sharply, driving his heavy, armored boot out in a vicious roundhouse kick toward the black stinger, intending to parry the strike and shatter the carapace.

He missed.

His foot swung through empty, superheated air as the stinger adjusted its trajectory mid-flight with impossible agility. The massive, fist-sized barb at the end of the segmented tail bypassed his guard entirely and pierced straight into his upper right leg, driving through the reinforced polymer of his new combat suit and burying itself deep into his thigh muscle.

Searanox gasped, his eyes flying open beneath his sunglasses. He could feel an unnatural, boiling heat spread instantly through his thigh, radiating outward from where the stinger had embedded itself, paralyzing the nerves with an agonizing, molten venom.

A single second later, the sand directly beneath him exploded. Two massive, serrated pincers shot out from the earth, snapping violently around his ankles like inescapable iron shackles.

Before he could even raise his rifle to fire, a violent, predatory force yanked him completely off his feet. He hit the dune hard, the breath knocked from his lungs. From the cold, detached perspective of the drone still hovering faithfully in the air above, Searanox was forced to watch his own thrashing body being dragged forcefully, up to the hips, into the subterranean darkness of the scorching sand.
