Screams erupted through the city as the morning sun was suddenly, violently eclipsed. It wasn't a cloud or a lunar shadow; it was as if the world itself had been dipped in lead. In an instant, the city became an ocean of gray. All color drained from the surroundings—the red of the rusted steel, the green of the encroaching vines, and the blue of the sky—leaving behind a monochromatic wasteland. Inside the thick, gray haze that filled the space, the people remained the only points of vibrancy. Their colored cloths stood in stark, jarring contrast to the desaturated ruins around them.

Rayan, Samantha, and the four women, along with every other Awakened in the vicinity, paused whatever they were doing. A primal alarm bells rang in their heads, and they stormed into the streets to find the source of the anomaly. What they saw gripped their hearts with a cold, paralyzing shock.

A colossal, monochrome, and strangely incorporeal turtle towered over the ruined city. It was covered in ghostly, translucent moss that seemed to drift in a wind they couldn't feel. It was so large that its shell became the new horizon, a mountain of stone that moved with glacial, terrifying purpose.

"To arms!" someone bellowed from a distant street, though the voice sounded thin and frail against the sheer scale of the beast.

"Where is Searanox!?" Rayan screamed out, his hand gripping the hilt of his weapon so hard his knuckles turned white. He scanned the gray streets, looking for the familiar black-clad figure that usually held their world together.

Samantha didn't answer immediately. She merely looked toward the central plaza where the turtle stood, her eyes wide and reflecting the dull gray light. "He left..." her voice whispered, filled with a sudden, crushing resignation. She knew, with a sinking feeling in her gut, that whatever that thing was, it signaled the end of their brief sanctuary. With Searanox gone, what were they supposed to do against a literal god of stone?

Initially, there was no sound from the direction of the beast—only a heavy, unnatural silence that felt like pressure against their eardrums. Then, moments later, the delay caught up. The sound of shattering stone and breaking earth finally reached them, followed by tremors that turned the pavement into a shivering sea. The already ruined buildings groaned and swayed, sending plumes of dust and heavy rubble cascading down onto the streets below.

Suddenly, a thick beam of gray light shot from behind the buildings, lancing into the massive beast. The observers watched in awe as the beam traveled through the air in what looked like slow motion, cutting through the gray haze like a hot wire through wax. The turtle countered instantly with a blast of its own. Moments later, the earth shook even more violently, causing several heavily damaged high-rises to collapse into piles of twisted metal and concrete.

Carmen was the first to recognize the rhythm of the exchange—the way the gray beams pummeled the gigantic turtle with mechanical consistency.

"Those are Searanox’s drones," she muttered, her eyes fixed on the epicenter of the gray fog. "He is... he's in there. He’s fighting it."

"Fighting? That monstrosity!?" Vanessa's head snapped toward Carmen, her face pale. "Are you insane, Carmen? Nothing human fights something that size!"

After a moment of paralyzing hesitation, Sarah and Rayan were the first to break the spell. They didn't speak; they simply ran. They charged toward the direction of the plaza, driven by a desperate need to know the truth. Something impossible was happening, and they had to see it for themselves.

"Where are you going?" Samantha called after them, her voice cracking. "It isn't safe!"

"If that thing attacks the city, nowhere is safe, no matter where you hide!" Sarah turned her head while still in mid-sprint. "Dying here or dying there... the only difference is whether we see the face of what’s killing us!"

Her voice grew distant as she pulled away, disappearing into the haze. After a heartbeat of realization, the others nodded as if Sarah’s grim logic made perfect sense, and they followed suit.

As they reached the edge of the central plaza, the group skidded to a halt. What they saw was beyond their wildest, most fevered imaginations. It was a battlefield pulled straight from the deepest circles of hell. From their perspective at the edge of the node's influence, everything before them was transparent and slightly ghostly. The world inside the plaza was rendered in shifting shades of ash and charcoal, accompanied by an eerie, muffled silence, as if they were watching a muted broadcast on an old black-and-white television.

The Gaia Turtle was a living fortress of stone and moss, so immense it blotted out the sky and made the buildings look like toys. Against this titan, Searanox was a black-clad demon. In this gray world, he was drenched and dripping with a thick gray liquid that they could only assume was blood. There was no sound to his movements—only the delayed, deep rumbling of physical impacts that echoed through the ruins like thunder in a far-off valley. The ground was littered with the mangled, shredded corpses of shadowy wolves, their dark blood pooling like spilled ink on the gray stones.

Iris stood frozen at the very edge of the carnage. She looked like a forgotten, translucent statue, her greatsword hanging limp in her grasp. Her eyes were wide with a terror she couldn't conceal, fixed entirely on the whirlwind of violence that Searanox had become.

Two drones—flattened, disc-shaped machines with central cores and articulated segments—hovered protectively around her. They emitted a small, defiant circle of gray light in the oppressive gloom, keeping the stray shadows at bay. But the rest of Searanox's swarm was engaged in a deadly, slow-motion ballet with the turtle. Gray beams lanced out, chipping away at the colossal beast's armored shell, while the Gaia Turtle retaliated with energy blasts that vaporized the pavement wherever the drones had hovered a microsecond prior.

Suddenly, Searanox moved, a blur of speed that defied the human eye's ability to track. He was no longer just relying on his drones; he was in the fray, a monster among monsters. He ducked under the sweeping claw of a wolf with a fluid, liquid grace, only to punch the butt of his rifle into the creature’s head, splitting the skull open like a ripe melon. Another wolf was kicked into the air with enough force to shatter its ribs, only to be slammed back down a moment later. Each impact sent a shockwave through the ground that they could feel.

"What the fuck is that..." Vanessa breathed, the words escaping her lips in a choked, horrified whisper. Her face was ashen. She had thought she understood the extent of his power, but this was a revelation of a different kind. This was not a man. This was a butcher who found a sick thrill in his work—a slaughter driven by a perfect, terrifying skill. The total disregard he showed for his own injuries only made the scene more grotesque.

Sarah didn't speak. She couldn't find the breath. Her throat felt tight, as if the gray haze were choking her, and her mouth was bone-dry. All she could do was stare at the carnage, at the sheer, unadulterated violence playing out in the silence. Even from a distance, the imagined scent of metallic blood seemed to fill her nostrils, making her stomach churn with nausea. She had seen him fight before, but this wasn't a battle; it was a ritual of desecration.

With rapid, flickering flashes of gray, a dagger appeared in Searanox’s hand. He stabbed a wolf in the throat before the blade vanished in another flash, replaced by his rifle or his bare hands. It happened so fast they could barely follow the transitions. He switched weapons with such mechanical speed that if one blinked, they would miss the change entirely.

"I-Is... Is he laughing?" Lana asked, her voice trembling like a leaf in the wind. She had noticed the curve of his lips—the menacing, jagged grin that didn't belong on a human face.

A collective shiver ran down their spines. The sight was so grotesque, so utterly alien to their understanding of the man, that their minds struggled to process it. He wasn't just a survivor; he was a force of nature, a whirlwind of death that reveled in the destruction he caused.

Carmen’s analytical mind tried to categorize the data, searching for a logical explanation for his behavior. Was it a skill? A side effect of the node? But the deeper she looked, the more she realized there was no logic here. The bloodlust, the glee in his movements, the way he tore through the wolves with a ferocity that bordered on ecstasy—it was beyond science. She had always viewed him as a predator, but now she saw him in his natural habitat. He wasn't just surviving the chaos; he was thriving in it.

Samantha, who had arrived last with the group, stood with her arms wrapped tightly around herself, her face a mask of disbelief. She had seen him as their savior—the only anchor they had in this new, terrifying world. But now, watching him bathe in the blood of his enemies, she saw the truth. He wasn't their savior. He was a cruel, sadistic entity that happened to be on their side. For now.

As the last of the wolves fell, Searanox raised his rifle and re-engaged the colossal beast. The group watched as the two titans clashed, but there was a strange distortion in the air. Everything in the plaza—the turtle, the falling debris, the shifting fog—seemed to move through thick molasses, slowed down to a supernatural crawl. Only Searanox moved at normal speed, a bolt of black lightning striking at a mountain that couldn't move fast enough to stop him.

"He is enjoying this," Lana whispered, the sound lost to the gray wind. She had seen the way he smiled as he ripped the hearts from the wolves, the way he laughed silently as he smashed their skulls. It was a look of pure, unadulterated joy.

Vanessa’s face hardened, her jaw clenching. She had always known he was dangerous, but this was a new level of depravity. She had viewed him as a necessary means to an end, a weapon to be pointed at the world so they could live. But now, she wasn't sure if the weapon wouldn't eventually turn on them.

Minutes stretched into what felt like hours. Every time the wolves were defeated, new ones took their place, only to be slaughtered with the same brutal efficiency. Finally, under the constant, unrelenting assault from the drones and the man himself, the Gaia Turtle began to buckle. Its ancient legs trembled, and cracks began to spiderweb across its mountain-like shell.

Before the monstrosity could crash to the ground, a tremendous earthquake rolled through the entire city. It was a tectonic shift that nearly threw the observers to their knees. At that exact moment, the ruined buildings of the city began to dissolve from the rooftops downward, turning into shimmering, swirling strands of golden light that defied the gray world.
