Systembound: Rise of the Dronemancer [Book 1. Complete] / Systembound: Rise of Androxis [Book 2. Ongoing]
[Chapter 151. Alpha]
Lana positioned herself at the threshold of the wide, jagged tunnel, her heavy shield held firmly before her like a defiant, immutable barrier. The cold stone of the floor seeped through the soles of her boots, but she barely noticed. Her eyes darted backward, briefly catching the tactical positions of her companions—they stood in a staggered, rehearsed formation behind her, their faces etched with a volatile mixture of grim determination and primal fear.
Searanox himself wasn't the farthest back, but he occupied the most commanding position. He was perched on his travel drone, which floated near the high, ribbed ceiling of the tunnel like a silent, metal predator waiting for a weakness to manifest. A few times during the descent, Lana could have sworn she detected something strange in his gaze—something that wasn't the fear or worry that clearly plagued the rest of them. Instead, it was something dark, clinical, and calculating. It sent a cold shower down her spine that was even more chilling than the static electricity currently charging the air, making the fine hairs on her arms stand erect beneath her armor.
As she glanced toward Carmen, she knew the younger woman had also noticed the subtle shift in their benefactor’s demeanor. Carmen’s brow was furrowed, her analytical mind likely spinning through a thousand variables, but neither of them could decipher the true meaning behind his stillness. Was this change a positive sign of confidence, or a negative omen of the danger to come? It was impossible to gauge through that expressionless visor. All they knew for certain was that this shift in energy was tied directly to the massive chamber ahead—the sanctum of the Alpha Dire Wolf. The sheer weight of that knowledge settled heavily in their chests, making every breath feel labored.
With slight, nearly imperceptible nods exchanged between the four of them—a silent, final acknowledgment of their shared dread—Lana turned her focus back toward the encroaching darkness. She took a deep, lung-expanding breath and released a bellowing war cry. The sound tore from her throat, a raw, gutteral challenge that thundered into the chamber.
The vibration reverberated off the damp stone walls, filling every corner of the vast expanse and echoing through the deep crags and shadowed corners of the lair. Her taunting call wasn't just noise; it was an invitation, a psychological hook backed by the System that compelled everything within the chamber to answer—forcing the hidden predators to fixate their killing intent solely on her shield.
Within seconds, the silence was shattered. Three dozen dire wolves rose from their resting positions among the stalagmites, their lean, lupine forms silhouetted against the dim bioluminescence of the cave. A heartbeat later, they burst into motion—a coordinated wave of predatory muscle and dark fur rushing toward the tunnel entrance with terrifying, liquid speed.
As the pack drew closer, Vanessa unleashed her first arcane bolt. The glowing projectile hissed through the air, illuminating the snarling, saliva-slicked faces of the lead wolves for a split second before detonating against a shoulder. Simultaneously, Carmen placed her protective healing ward on Lana. A faint white glow shimmered into existence, forming a luminous mark on the side of Lana’s neck that pulsed in time with her racing heart. Meanwhile, Sarah stood poised and waiting at the periphery—a coiled spring of lethal intent, ready to unleash her deadly mobility at the perfect tactical moment.
The lesser dire wolves jumped the final few meters, pouncing at Lana as if she were nothing more than a cornered beast of prey. Lana braced herself and raised her shield. In a flash of blue energy, the edges of Wavebreaker extended with transparent light, doubling its effective radius instantly. The first wolf crashed against the barrier with the force of a speeding vehicle, but Lana’s body didn't flinch; she didn't give up a single millimeter of ground. She met the next attacker with a brutal shield bash, the flat of the metal slamming into the beast’s skull and slapping it out of the air. It crumpled against the near wall with a sickening crunch.
Sarah appeared like a ghost next to the wolves that lay dazed on the ground. With a singular, clinical stab of her Mycelial Fang, she ended their lives before they could find their footing.
Vanessa’s spells were connecting with a new level of precision. After the harrowing fight in the previous large chamber, the team’s movements had become significantly cleaner, more economical. She knew exactly which target to prioritize and which to ignore. She trusted Lana to hold the line and Sarah to pick off the stragglers, focusing her arcane bolts on the wolves she knew would pose a structural threat to their formation.
She watched with bated breath as Sarah blinked into the cavern to deal with one of the Greater Dire Wolves lurking in the back. The beast’s maw was already gaping wide, its head tilted upward to signal the rest of the pack. Just before it could release its deafening, morale-crushing howl, Sarah’s dagger pierced its throat. The only sound that escaped the creature was a wet, pathetic gurgle. With one more fluid twist of the blade, the Greater fell dead. Sarah wiped a smudge of nonexistent sweat from her forehead before vanishing again, reappearing safely inside the tunnel's protective embrace.
Vanessa and Lana were clearing the last of the lesser wolves when a truly hulking form stepped into the light at the edge of the raised platform on the far side of the chamber. It was nearly double the size of the Greater variants, its fur thick and matted with the dried blood of previous challengers. The System window hovering near it confirmed their fears: it was the Alpha.
Before the beast could leap down, Vanessa sent a volley of bolts screaming toward it. A few of the projectiles went wide, striking the ceiling and walls of the tunnel and leaving behind chipped, darkened stone and the scent of ozone. Sarah didn't use her skill to close the distance this time; she remained stationary, watching the Alpha advance at a speed that rivaled her own supernatural quickness.
Lana braced for a massive physical impact, but what followed was a tactical shock. The Alpha jumped, landing not directly against her shield, but a meter in front of her. A deep, bone-rattling howl followed at point-blank range.
The sheer sonic pressure of the howl shattered Lana’s guard. Her shield dropped for a fraction of a second, and in that window, the Alpha’s claws and teeth tore into her exposed shoulder and flank.
Within an instant, the mark from Carmen flashed with a brilliant light, granting Lana a few precious seconds of invulnerability while Carmen scrambled to regain her focus and activate a primary heal. The deep gashes in Lana’s side began to knit back together almost as fast as the Alpha could inflict them; it was a grueling, constant cycle of destruction and rebirth.
Sarah seized the opening, plunging her dagger into the side of the beast’s head. The enchanted tip scraped along the dense bone of the skull, leaving a large, ragged gash but failing to penetrate for an instant kill. With a fluid, acrobatic motion, she used the momentum of the strike to vault over the beast's back, driving the fang deep into its flank.
At the same time, several bolts of concentrated arcane energy slammed into the Alpha’s opposite side. The beast was taking massive amounts of damage; its body was covered in blackened, burned spots where the bolts had vaporized fur and flesh. Deep crevices that showed the white of the bone beneath ran along its entire length. With one final, gurgling breath, the Alpha’s legs buckled, and it crashed to the stone floor, dead.
The four women let out a collective victory scream that echoed with raw, hysterical relief through the cavern. Lana and Sarah shared a quick, high-five, their hands slapping together with a wet sound in the blood-slicked gloom.
But Carmen’s gaze remained fixed on Searanox. She wasn't celebrating. Her mind, always several steps ahead, had already cataloged two deeply unsettling details: first, the conspicuous absence of the expected System notification for the dungeon clear or the Alpha's defeat. Second, there were strange, flickering blue flashes dancing in the darkness of the tunnel behind them.
Beside Searanox, two flattened metallic discs now hovered silently. Their central cores pulsated with a violent energy as six articulated segments rotated rapidly around them, connected by a faint blue shimmer of hard-light. At first glance, they resembled some kind of otherworldly, geometric flower.
The drones shot forward the exact moment Searanox’s travel drone dissolved beneath him in a shower of blue sparks. His heavy, armored boots hit the stone floor with a resounding, metallic thud that vibrated through the floor and into the women's feet.
Both Intermediate Defensive Drones raced past the group, projecting multi-layered hexagonal barriers into the tunnel's entrance. Their shimmering walls expanded with a low, aggressive hum.
The celebration stopped abruptly. Lana and Sarah watched, frozen, as the drones formed a perimeter and Searanox began walking toward the main chamber with his long-range rifle drawn, the matte metal gleaming dangerously in the dim light. It all happened in a matter of seconds—a blur of high-tech motion that left Vanessa and Carmen watching from the rear with wide, unblinking eyes.
Searanox strode past them with purposeful, heavy strides, his focus entirely on the shadows beyond the Alpha’s corpse. Then, there was a deafening crack of thunder that shook the very foundations of the cavern. It was followed by a blinding flash of white light so intense it bleached their vision, drowning out every shadow within the cavern and the tunnel.
When the light finally faded, it left them plunged into an even deeper, more oppressive darkness than before. The sudden, ringing silence was broken only by the sound of their own ragged, panicked breathing and the distant, mechanical cooling of a weapon.
