System Awakened: I Became the Mafia Kings' Obsession
Chapter 138:He likes his brother’s wife
Chapter 138: 138:He likes his brother’s wife
Nova stared blankly at the heavily armed squad, her eyes finally settling on the masked young woman leading them. Her expression remained completely undisturbed as the System interface booted up, projecting a stream of blue text directly into her line of sight.
?[Target Information Report]
[Real Name: Angelica Hale]
[Code Name: Gelica]
[Age: 22]
[Status: Underground Assassin]
[Threat Level: 15%]
[Note: Target is currently on a contracted mission to assassinate Clark and Dora.]
?Nova’s brow relaxed. Deeming the squad irrelevant, she turned to exit the ruined foyer.
?"Where are the people who live in this house?" Angelica’s cold, authoritative voice echoed through the hall, halting Nova in her tracks.
?"Dead," Nova replied without so much as sparing her a glance. Her tone was a chilling, absolute zero that sent a violent shiver cascading down Angelica’s spine.
?Angelica stared at Nova, forcing a skeptical smirk to her lips. "What do you mean, they are dead? Are you trying to tell me that you killed them?"
?Nova slowly raised her head, meeting the assassin’s gaze. Her eyes were empty voids, utterly devoid of warmth or humanity. "By now, they should be nearing the gates of hell. You can confirm it by asking them yourself. I really don’t mind lending you a hand to get there."
?A jolt of pure shock hit Angelica, and she subconsciously took a step back. Staring directly into those deadly blue eyes, a suffocating realization gripped her throat. "She mean...She doesn’t mind killing me, too."
?Swallowing her rising panic, Angelica tightened her grip on her weapon. "Which underground faction do you belong to? Mind telling me who gave you the task to eliminate them?"
?Nova looked away, entirely bored. "They offended me, so I wiped them out. Do not attempt to interrogate me, and step out of my way before I lose my temper."
?The heavy, oppressive silence in the room stretched for a long, agonizing moment. Finally, Angelica swallowed hard and stepped to the left, clearing the doorway. Nova walked out, vanishing without a second glance at them.
?The moment she was gone, one of the armed men stepped up beside Angelica. "Gelica, this girl seems incredibly off. She completely ignored your questions about her syndicate. Furthermore, she claimed she killed Clark. Clark isn’t just an ordinary shadow assassin—how could a single woman take him down?"
?Angelica stared at the empty doorway, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. She waved her hand dismissively. "The way she looked at me just now... I felt like she already knew exactly who I was," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Do a thorough background investigation on her immediately. As for this contract—mark the mission as successful."
?Without waiting for a reply, Angelica turned and marched out.
...
?The morning sun beat down on the bustling streets of Sydney. Nova walked casually along the pavement, watching the city traffic move back and forth. She was just about to activate the System to download a full mapping of the country when a sleek luxury car suddenly pulled over against the curb a few meters ahead.
?The tinted window rolled down, revealing Lucian leaning casually against the leather steering wheel. A sweet, flawless smile played on his lips.
?"Yo! Isn’t this my lovely sister-in-law? What are you doing out here in Australia? And roaming the streets alone, no less. Did you have a fight with my brother?"
?Nova’s gaze turned instantly bored. She ignored him completely and turned to walk away, but Lucian’s voice cut through the street noise.
?"Why are you being so cold to me, sister-in-law? How about I take you back to my house first so you can rest?"
?Nova paused. Staring at him with an expression of profound apathy, she walked over to the car, opened the rear door, and slid into the back seat. She crossed her arms and stared out the window, refusing to speak.
?Lucian smirked to himself as he pulled back onto the road. "What an impossibly cold beauty," he thought.
?Soon, the car pulled up the long driveway of a sprawling estate. Lucian parked and smoothly stepped out to open Nova’s door like a perfect gentleman. Nova stepped out and cast a sweeping glance over the property. The architecture and layout were remarkably similar to the mansion Cassian had purchased which is to her liking.
?Without waiting for Lucian to lead her in, she walked straight through the front doors, navigating the halls as if she owned the place.
?Lucian was left standing by the car, momentarily dumbfounded. "Has she been here before? No, that’s completely impossible," he murmured to himself, quickly closing the car door and hurrying inside to catch up.
?As Nova stepped into the grand living room, she found a blonde-haired young woman standing near the kitchen island, holding a plate of freshly sliced apples. Hearing the heavy front doors open, the woman turned. When she saw Nova, her golden eyes widened slightly in surprise.
?Nova merely raised a single, elegant eyebrow. She didn’t speak, brushing past the woman and heading straight for the grand staircase.
?"Um... excuse me, Miss," the blonde lady called out tentatively.
?"Mrs.," Nova corrected, her voice echoing with icy authority.
?The blonde woman flinched, instantly terrified by the sheer, suffocating weight of Nova’s aura. "M... Mrs.," she stammered, frantically correcting herself.
?Nova gave a curt nod of satisfaction and continued her ascent.
?"Sister-in-law," Lucian called out as he finally walked into the foyer, tossing his keys onto the console table.
?Nova paused on the landing, looking down at him with extreme disinterest.
?"Should I give my brother a call and let him know that you are safely with me?" Lucian asked, staring unblinkingly up at her.
?"No need. They will find me soon enough," Nova replied flatly, turning down the corridor toward the guest wing. "I am taking the guest room. You and your girlfriend should go sleep together."
?Hearing Nova’s blunt words, the blonde lady’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson.
?"No, sister-in-law, you misunderstand. She is not my—"
?Lucian couldn’t even finish his sentence before Nova stepped into the bedroom and slammed the heavy oak door shut, the sound echoing through the quiet house.
?Lucian let out a sharp sigh of defeat. The easygoing smile vanished from his face, replaced instantly by a dark, freezing glare as he turned slowly toward the blonde woman.
?"What exactly did you tell her?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal, interrogating register.
?"I... I didn’t say anything to her, Lucian! I swear!" she replied, shrinking back against the counter. "I didn’t know she was married, so I called her ’Miss.’ She corrected me, and I addressed her as ’Mrs.’ That was the only exchange we had!"
?Lucian’s glare only turned colder. "Why are you even in my mansion in the first place?" he questioned ruthlessly.
?"I... I just wanted to see if I could help prepare your breakfast," the lady whispered, her voice breaking softly as she fought desperately to hold back her tears.
?Lucian hissed in pure annoyance. Ignoring her completely, he brushed past her and stormed up the stairs toward his own bedroom.
?The blonde lady stood frozen in the kitchen, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the marble counter. "I made him angry again. Did I go too far just by being here?" she thought, a heavy, agonizing ache settling in her chest.
?Then, a sudden realization struck her.
?Just moments ago, when Lucian was speaking to Nova—his sister-in-law—his eyes had been so incredibly soft. His voice was warm and playful, completely lacking the harsh, unforgiving ice he always used with her.
?Her beautiful golden eyes widened in sheer horror as the pieces fell into place.
?"He likes his brother’s wife."
?The realization hit her like a physical blow. "If his brother ever found out about this, a catastrophic war would break out between them. Lucian would be in terrible danger. Why?" she thought, fresh tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "Why do things have to be this way?"
