System Anomaly: The Sin of Greed[LitRPG/Prog Fem/Anti-Hero]
Chapter 122 – The Mist Step.
The morning of the Conquerors' Bracket grand final drew twenty thousand spectators to the stands of the Red Cauldron Arena.
The heat from the red sand rose in dry waves beneath the coppery sun. In the honor box, Inquisitor Vaelor stood at the iron balustrade, watching the central pit with his broadsword planted in the stone between his boots.
Diana and Zarek stepped onto the arena beneath a heavy silence from the crowd.
The Commander wore her polished Dragon Chestplate, the Crown of Arcane Sovereignty gleaming upon her brow between her black horns, her black steel dagger held firmly in her right hand. Her reserve of 1,460 mana points and 610 hit points were fully restored.
Beside her, Zarek carried his two honed lunar swords, his four secondary arms primed to loose steel threads.
The arena herald raised his voice through the magical horn:
“The grand final! In the east wing: Pair Seventeen, Commander Diana and the Blade Weaver! In the west wing: the solitary duelist from the northern rifts... Kaelis, the Mist Wanderer (Level 62)!”
***
From the west gate, only a single figure emerged.
There was no partner, nor any heavy cast-iron armor.
Kaelis was a tall, lean woman, dressed in a faded gray poncho over plain leather trousers and short boots. On her head, she wore a wide-brimmed hat of straw and iron that shaded the upper half of her face, leaving only thin lips and a pale chin visible.
At her left hip rested a single weapon: a slender rapier with a blade crafted from translucent gray glass.
Diana activated [Command Eye] with 80 Perception points:

[SOLO DUELIST APPRAISAL]
- Name: Kaelis
- Class: [Spectral Void Dancer]
- Level: 62 | HP: 1,100 / 1,100 | MP: 900 / 900
- Core Attributes: Agility: 65 | Perception: 60 | Willpower: 45

Diana furrowed her brow beneath the amethyst circlet.
Level 62. That was merely two levels above Zarek, with a health pool of only 1,100 points, well within reach of her ice lances and black flames fueled by 201 Intelligence.
Yet there was no aura of blood, no roars of rage, and not the slightest spark of tension throughout the woman's frame beneath the straw hat.
Kaelis walked across the red sand with a calm so absolute, so void, and so quiet that it seemed as though she were merely strolling on a Sunday afternoon beside a lake.
The iron gong rang out.
***
Zarek was the first to act.
The arachnid demon sprinted at the full speed of Level 60, triggering [Ascendant Fury] and loosing six cables of moon steel silk to cordon off the perimeter around Kaelis.
Kaelis did not try to run. She did not draw her rapier right away.
The woman took merely half a step to the left, swaying her torso with deceptive slowness.
The six steel threads slashed the air exactly where she had stood a millisecond before. Kaelis did not jump. She simply glided across the gravel without kicking up a single speck of dust beneath her boots, appearing outside the web's reach as if she had phased straight through empty space.
Zarek brought both moon swords around in a swift cross-slash meant for decapitation.
TICK.
The sound was minute.
Kaelis drew the gray glass rapier in a motion so short and clean that sight could barely register the blade's glint. The tip of the rapier met the flat of Zarek's sword at the precise fulcrum point, redirecting the brute force of the blow into the sandy floor.
Then, with her free left hand, Kaelis delivered a gentle two-finger tap to the center of Zarek's diaphragm.
There was no explosion of mana.
There was only an internal pop of displaced air that short-circuited the nerve clusters across Zarek's six arms in that very second. The Level 60 demon lost his footing and dropped to his knees in the sand, paralyzed by the precise mechanical shock before he could mount a second strike.
***
Diana reacted the instant Zarek went down.
Backed by 201 Intelligence, she thrust out both open hands.
MANA PRISON!
Translucent chains erupted from the ground to envelop Kaelis.
But the chains passed right through the gray-ponchoed woman's silhouette, dissipating in the air as if Kaelis were nothing more than cold smoke cast upon the sand.
Diana wasted no time:
OBSIDIAN HORNS' IGNEOUS FOCUS!
PZZZZT!
The fine beam of white fire lanced from the tips of the circlet toward the duelist's chest.
Kaelis merely tilted her head three centimeters to the side. The concentrated heat beam slashed through the air, singeing the brim of the woman's straw hat without ever touching the skin of her neck.
Diana drew upon her mana to trigger [Arcane Teleportation] and establish a twenty-meter defensive fallback.
She blinked through the azure energy, reappearing beside the eastern granite wall.
But at the exact millisecond Diana's boot sole met the red sand... the cold tip of the gray glass rapier was already resting against her throat.
***
Diana froze.
The slender glass blade rested with millimeter precision over her jugular, nestled right in the unarmored gap between the collar of the Dragon Chestplate and the base of her obsidian horns.
Kaelis stood directly before her.
The woman had used no teleportation, left no trace of mana, and made no sound on the wind. She had simply moved through the blind spot of Diana's perception, anticipating the exact point where the Commander would complete her magical blink.
Diana possessed 1,460 mana points and dozens of destructive spells coiled in her chest.
Yet if she moved her neck a single centimeter, the glass blade would puncture her artery before the first spark of fire could take form.
The defeat was total, clean, and undeniable.
The arena referee sprinted to the boundary with his banner raised, his voice cutting through the stunned silence of the twenty thousand spectators:
“MATCH OVER! VICTORY TO KAELIS BY TACTICAL SURRENDER!”
***
Kaelis withdrew the glass rapier slowly, sheathing the blade at her waist with a gentle click of metal.
The woman lifted the brim of her straw hat with the tips of her fingers, revealing calm, deep gray eyes that looked upon Diana without contempt or mockery.
“You have a swift mind and terrifying firepower, girl of Greed,” Kaelis said, her voice soft and deliberate. “Yet you fight in a hurry. You want to swallow the world in a single bite, believing magical force solves every problem of distance. In the abyss... whoever runs too fast trips over their own shadow.”
Kaelis turned her back and walked across the red sand with unhurried steps toward the champions' tunnel.
Diana remained leaning against the granite rampart, her dark eyes with golden rings locked onto the retreating back of the woman.
She was not physically harmed. There were no cracked ribs or blood running down her chestplate.
Yet Diana's pride burned with a lesson no economics text on Earth had ever taught her: brute power and high numbers could not overcome the pure mastery of someone who owned every inch of the space around them.
The arena attendant approached cautiously and handed over the pouch containing 20 pure Silver Coins for second place in the tournament.
With the prize, the total balance in the faction vault climbed to an untouched 513 Silver Coins and 50 Bronze (51.35 Gold Coins).
Zarek rose from the sand beside her, dusting off his trousers and popping all six arms with a long sigh:
“That woman is an honest-to-god ghost, Diana. I didn't even see the tip of her boot move.”
Diana stowed the pouch of silver at her waist, adjusting the Crown of Sovereignty with a steady hand.
She had lost the official first-place border pass.
But she had gained the exact measure of what she needed to master before setting foot in the Fourth Circle.
