Chapter 86 — The Core Territory

The stone gate closed behind the expedition with a deep vibration that traveled through the floor and disappeared into the distance. Subin did not turn around. His attention remained on the corridor ahead, where the black stone walls seemed to absorb their light rather than reflect it. The air was heavier here, saturated with mana to a degree none of them had experienced in the upper regions. Every breath carried a faint pressure through the body, and even the expedition's strongest members could feel their mana reserves responding instinctively to the environment.

"Then slow down," Subin replied.

She looked at him. "You aren't affected?"

"I am."

"But you don't look affected."

Subin gave a faint smile. "I'm not trying to fight the environment."

That was the difference. The pressure wasn't an enemy. It was simply a condition of the territory. Resisting it unnecessarily would consume mana, while accepting it allowed the body to gradually adjust. Subin slowed his breathing and relaxed his muscles, allowing the surrounding mana to pass through his body without forcing it away.

Subin ignored the notification and continued walking.

The corridor eventually opened into an enormous cavern.

The expedition stopped together.

A vast stone plain stretched before them, interrupted by countless pillars that rose from the floor. Some were several meters tall while others reached hundreds of meters into the darkness. Blue mana flowed between them like faint rivers, connecting the pillars into a gigantic network.

At the center of the cavern stood something that looked like a mountain.

It wasn't made of stone.

It was a formation of compressed mana crystals.

The structure rose from the ground like a jagged blue-black mountain, with countless layers extending downward into the earth.

Yerin stared at it.

"Is that the Core?"

Subin studied it carefully.

"No."

"How can you tell?"

"The mana is moving through it."

He pointed toward the lower sections.

"That's another conduit."

The entire crystal mountain was functioning like a gigantic reservoir and distribution structure. Mana entered from below, accumulated inside the formation, and then moved through the surrounding pillars into different regions.

Jae-hyun looked around.

"Then where is the actual core?"

Subin didn't answer.

He was listening.

Not with his ears.

With his perception.

There was a rhythm beneath the cavern.

By the third, Subin could feel it clearly.

He looked across the cavern.

There was another route.

A narrow passage between two crystal pillars.

The expedition followed.

As they moved deeper into the cavern, the first monster appeared.

It wasn't hiding.

It stood in the open, several hundred meters away.

The creature resembled a large humanoid warrior covered in dark stone armor. Its head was surrounded by a ring of floating crystals, and its body continuously absorbed mana from the surrounding air.

The guardian's weapon cracked.

The monster immediately reinforced the damaged section with mana and swung again.

Subin didn't retreat.

He observed.

The creature wasn't technically skilled, but its body and weapon had become extremely efficient because of the environment. Every movement contained enormous amounts of compressed energy.

A third attack came.

Subin shifted his stance and allowed the blade to pass.

His sword touched the guardian's elbow.

The creature attempted to change direction.

Subin followed the transition.

The connection between the guardian's shoulder and arm was severed.

The massive stone weapon collapsed.

The guardian stepped backward.

Its remaining arm transformed into a spear.

Subin continued watching.

The creature wasn't adapting intelligently.

It was changing its weapon according to the immediate situation.

That was enough.

Subin waited until the next transformation began.

Then he struck the transition.

The spear never fully formed.

The guardian's mana circulation collapsed inward, and its body cracked from the accumulated pressure.

A final strike from Simple Edge ended the battle.

He turned toward the path they had taken.

Subin smiled faintly.

"I'll come back."

The expedition began its return.

As they crossed the cavern, a final notification appeared.
