Chapter 82 — Beneath the Summit
The path descending from the summit was unlike the route Subin had taken to reach it. Instead of a natural slope, the mountain opened into a wide descending passage whose walls were covered in black stone and thin veins of blue crystal. The crystals pulsed at irregular intervals, sometimes glowing brightly enough to illuminate the entire corridor and sometimes fading until only the faint light from the Mana Tree behind him remained. Subin walked slowly, Simple Edge resting at his side while he paid attention to the mana moving through the walls. The dungeon was no longer behaving like a collection of separate environments. The deeper he went, the more clearly he could sense that the different territories were connected through a vast circulation system.
Han Yerin and the rest of the expedition eventually caught up with him. They had remained near the summit after his battle with Kael, partly because the pressure generated during the confrontation had been too intense for them to approach safely and partly because Subin had made it clear that the battle was an evaluation between two swordsmen rather than an ordinary monster hunt. Yerin looked toward the empty path where Kael had disappeared and then at Subin. "So you defeated it?" she asked. Subin shook his head. "No. The battle ended when it decided to stop." Kang Min-seok frowned at the answer. "That doesn't sound like a defeat." Subin gave a small smile. "It wasn't."
Nobody argued with him. They had all witnessed enough of the fight to understand the difference.
As they continued downward, Park Jae-hyun studied the surrounding walls. "How far do you think this passage goes?" Subin looked ahead before answering. "I don't know. But the mana is becoming denser." Yerin checked the expedition's instruments and frowned. "She's right. The concentration has already risen by almost forty percent since we left the summit." Subin corrected her quietly. "Not concentration. Flow." Yerin looked at him. "What's the difference?" He placed his palm against the wall for a moment, feeling the pulse beneath the stone. "Concentration tells us how much mana is present. Flow tells us where it's going. This isn't simply accumulating mana. It's moving it somewhere."
That observation changed the mood of the expedition.
They continued deeper, but this time the group paid much closer attention to the environment. The passage occasionally widened into enormous chambers where underground streams crossed beneath the floor. Some streams contained ordinary water, while others carried liquid mana that glowed faintly blue. Small creatures gathered around the edges of those streams, drinking from them before retreating into cracks in the stone. None of them attacked the expedition. They were too weak to compete with the humans moving through the territory, and their behavior suggested that the dungeon had already established a natural hierarchy.
Several kilometers farther down, the passage opened into a forest.
The transition was so sudden that even Yerin stopped.
There had been no gradual change in the terrain. One moment they were walking through black stone, and the next they were standing at the edge of a vast underground forest. Trees hundreds of meters tall rose toward a ceiling that couldn't be seen through the darkness. Their trunks were dark gray, almost metallic, while their leaves contained faint blue veins that carried mana from the roots toward the branches.
Subin stared at the forest.
"This wasn't here before."
Yerin looked at him. "You mean it grew?"
"Probably."
Kang Min-seok looked around uneasily. "How fast?"
Subin didn't answer immediately.
He couldn't.
There was no way to determine how quickly a dungeon could develop an ecosystem of this scale. But one thing was obvious. Blackstone Dungeon was not simply a place containing monsters. It was actively producing environments capable of supporting them.
The expedition entered cautiously.
The forest was quiet, but not empty. Birds with translucent wings moved between the branches, small reptilian creatures crawled along the roots, and several distant beasts could be heard moving through the undergrowth. The strange thing was that almost everything avoided the expedition rather than attacking it.
Subin understood why after walking for nearly half an hour.
They were passing through territory that belonged to stronger creatures.
The weaker monsters weren't frightened of the humans themselves. They were responding to the overwhelming mana signatures of the stronger beings deeper inside the forest.
Eventually, they encountered something different.
A tree had fallen across the path.
At first it looked ordinary, but when Subin approached, he noticed that the exposed roots were covered in tiny crystals. The crystals were absorbing mana from the surrounding soil and gradually changing color.
He crouched beside them.
"This is a mana purifier."
Yerin stepped closer. "Like the silver trees?"
"Similar, but more efficient."
He touched one of the crystals without absorbing its mana.
The system immediately responded.
[Environmental Mana Purification Structure detected.]
[Purity: 94.2%.]
[Function: Removes unstable mana particles from surrounding terrain.]
Subin looked toward the forest.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
The Mana Tree at the summit wasn't an isolated resource. The silver trees purified mana. The crystal formations regulated it. The rivers distributed it. The monsters absorbed it and converted it through evolution. The entire dungeon functioned as one enormous cycle.
And somewhere below them, the cycle was receiving its energy.
The expedition continued.
Several hours passed before they reached the next major territory. The forest gradually became darker, and the trees grew farther apart. Eventually, they reached a large open basin surrounded by black cliffs.
At its center was a lake.
Unlike the mana river they had seen earlier, this lake didn't glow blue.
It was almost completely black.
Yet Subin could feel enormous amounts of mana beneath its surface.
Yerin's expression tightened when she checked the instruments.
"Mana density is off the scale."
Subin stepped closer to the water.
The surface was perfectly still.
Then something moved beneath it.
The entire expedition immediately prepared for combat.
A massive silhouette passed underneath the lake before disappearing into the darkness.
Nobody attacked.
Subin raised his hand.
"Wait."
The others hesitated but followed his instruction.
The creature surfaced several minutes later.
It was enormous.
Its head alone was nearly the size of a small building, covered in dark scales with several rows of crystal-like structures running along its skull. It looked vaguely reptilian, but its body disappeared beneath the lake.
A system scan appeared.
[Blackwater Ancient Serpent]
Level: 104
Rank: A+
Territory Type: Lake Apex
Status: Stable
Nobody moved.
The serpent looked toward them.
Its enormous golden eyes settled on Subin.
For several seconds, neither side did anything.
Then the serpent slowly lowered its head back toward the water.
Subin understood.
It wasn't interested in fighting.
The creature wasn't protecting treasure or attempting to invade their territory. It was simply checking who had entered its domain.
Subin lowered Simple Edge.
"Let's leave it alone."
Min-seok looked surprised. "We're just going to walk away from a Level 104 A+ monster?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because there's nothing to gain from fighting it."
Min-seok opened his mouth but stopped.
The answer was simple.
Subin wasn't trying to kill every powerful creature he encountered. His goal was to become stronger, not to turn every territory into a battlefield.
They moved around the lake.
The serpent watched them for several minutes before sinking completely beneath the black surface.
As they continued, Subin felt something change.
The mana beneath the ground was becoming increasingly turbulent.
His expression became serious.
"There's a storm coming."
Yerin checked the instruments.
"No storm formation detected."
"Not above us."
Subin pointed toward the ground.
"Below."
The expedition stopped.
A low vibration passed through the earth.
Then another.
The black cliffs around them began glowing with blue lines.
The entire basin was connected to the deeper mana network.
Subin realized what was happening.
A mana surge was moving upward through the dungeon.
It wasn't a storm in the traditional sense.
It was pressure.
The deeper regions were releasing accumulated mana into the upper ecosystem.
Yerin immediately ordered everyone to secure their positions.
"How dangerous?"
Subin looked at the lake.
The black water had begun to ripple.
"Depends on how much reaches this layer."
The answer came quickly.
The ground shook.
A wave of blue energy passed through the basin.
Every monster in the surrounding forest reacted simultaneously.
Some fled.
Others became aggressive.
Several creatures began absorbing the released mana.
Their levels increased.
Level 61 → Level 63.
Level 68 → Level 70.
Level 73 → Level 76.
The expedition watched in disbelief.
"This is the same phenomenon we saw before," Yerin said.
Subin shook his head.
"No. It's stronger."
The second pulse arrived.
This time the mana wave was powerful enough to crack several crystals around the basin.
The Blackwater Ancient Serpent emerged from the lake again, but this time its body was surrounded by dark-blue mana.
It wasn't attacking.
It was absorbing.
Subin watched its circulation carefully.
The creature's level didn't immediately increase.
Instead, the mana entered its body and was compressed repeatedly before being distributed throughout its organs.
It was doing exactly what Kael had done during their battle.
Controlling the transition.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
He finally understood something important.
The strongest creatures in Blackstone Dungeon weren't necessarily strong because they possessed enormous amounts of mana.
They were strong because they knew how to use what they possessed.
Kael had demonstrated it through combat.
The Ancient Serpent demonstrated it through survival.
And the dungeon itself demonstrated it through its environment.
Subin looked at Simple Edge.
His own path was beginning to follow the same principle.
He didn't need more power simply for the sake of having more power.
He needed better control over what he already possessed.
The system appeared.
[Environmental Adaptation Understanding detected.]
[Sword Intent: 91% → 91.4%.]
[Decision Space: Initial Understanding → 8%.]
[Sword God Class Evolution: 82% → 83%.]
The mana surge gradually weakened.
The expedition waited until the environment stabilized before continuing.
They eventually found another passage leading deeper.
Unlike the previous passage, this one was naturally formed between two enormous black cliffs. Blue crystals covered the walls, but these crystals were different from the ones above. They weren't merely storing mana.
They were pointing downward.
Subin followed their direction.
At the bottom of the passage was a massive stone door.
There were no words carved into it.
No treasure symbols.
No warning.
It simply existed.
Subin approached and placed his hand against the surface.
The stone responded immediately.
A low vibration passed through the door.
Then a system notification appeared.
[Deep Territory Boundary detected.]
[Current Exploration Progress: 36%.]
[Beyond this point: Unmapped.]
Subin looked at the door.
Yerin approached from behind.
"Can you open it?"
Subin examined the structure.
"I probably can."
"Then should we?"
He remained silent for a moment.
Behind them, the expedition members waited.
Ahead was an unexplored section of the dungeon.
Subin placed his hand back against the door.
This time, he didn't force it.
He simply pushed.
The enormous stone door began moving.
A deep vibration spread through the mountain as the entrance opened.
Cold air emerged from the darkness beyond.
Subin stepped forward.
The system displayed one final notification.
[Blackstone Dungeon Exploration Progress: 36% → 37%.]
[New Territory Entered.]
[Recommended Minimum Combat Rank: A.]
Subin smiled faintly.
"Let's keep going."
The expedition followed him into the darkness.
Far behind them, the Mana Tree continued to pulse.
Far above, Kael watched from the edge of the forest.
And deep beneath Blackstone Dungeon, the mana continued flowing toward somewhere none of them had reached yet.
