Chapter 77: The Dungeon Beyond A Rank

The words remained suspended before Subin for only a few seconds.

[Rank Evaluation Complete.]

[Current Rank: A.]

[Sword God Class Evolution: 78%.]

Subin dismissed the notifications.

The promotion itself didn't feel particularly significant.

He had expected it.

After fighting the A+ Guardian and surviving the evolving Indian dungeon, remaining classified as B rank had become increasingly difficult to justify. The Association had simply needed enough evidence to formalize what his combat ability already demonstrated.

What interested him more was the increase in his class evolution.

Seventy-six to seventy-eight percent.

Two percent.

It wasn't much.

But it confirmed something important.

His Sword God class wasn't evolving merely through raw power.

Understanding mattered.

Experience mattered.

The way he walked his sword path mattered.

Subin looked toward the three evaluators.

Kang Min-seok was still standing near the edge of the arena, rubbing his shoulder.

The dual-blade user had retrieved her second weapon.

Park Jae-hyun was quietly examining Simple Edge.

The older swordsman finally looked up.

"That sword."

Subin glanced at it.

"What about it?"

"It's ordinary."

"Yes."

Park smiled.

"That's what makes it interesting."

Subin didn't answer.

Park had noticed something that most people ignored.

Simple Edge looked like an ordinary sword.

It didn't release an intimidating aura.

It didn't possess overwhelming attack power.

It had no flashy special effect.

Yet it had remained compatible with Subin through every stage of his development.

Park looked at Subin.

"Are you planning to keep using it?"

"Yes."

"Even if you obtain a stronger sword?"

Subin answered immediately.

"If I find a stronger sword, I'll use it if I have a reason."

Park nodded.

"Good answer."

The Association official interrupted them.

"Subin, there's one more matter."

Subin turned.

The official was holding a tablet.

"Your promotion changes your dungeon access."

"How?"

"Several restrictions are removed."

The tablet displayed a list of dungeon classifications.

B rank.

A rank.

A+.

Then another category appeared.

Special-Class Dungeon.

Subin looked at it.

"Special class?"

"These dungeons cannot be reliably classified using the normal F-to-A system."

"Why?"

"Because their environments don't remain stable."

Subin's expression became interested.

The official continued.

"Some contain rapidly evolving monsters. Some have unusual mana phenomena. Some have internal ecosystems that are too dangerous to evaluate accurately. A few have entrances that change location."

"How many are there?"

"Globally?"

"Yes."

The official hesitated.

"Twenty-three confirmed."

Subin's eyes narrowed.

"And the Association has access to one?"

"We have information about one."

"Where?"

The official turned the tablet toward him.

A map appeared.

It showed a region several hours away.

The location wasn't marked as a city.

Instead, the Association had labeled it simply:

Blackstone Dungeon.

Subin studied the information.

Classification: Special Class

Current Estimated Monster Range: Level 65–100

Known Highest Confirmed Rank: A+

Dungeon Stability: 63%

Exploration Status: 18%

Known Floors: Unknown

Subin continued reading.

Primary Environmental Feature: Mana Storms

His expression became serious.

"Mana storms?"

"Yes."

"Explain."

The official nodded.

"Unlike ordinary mana fluctuations, the storms create sudden changes in mana density. We've recorded areas where mana concentration increased by several hundred percent for short periods."

Subin immediately remembered the underground mana river.

"And monsters?"

"They're affected too."

"How?"

"Some become stronger. Some undergo temporary mutations. Some develop new abilities."

Subin was silent.

The evolving Indian dungeon had already demonstrated how quickly monsters could adapt.

A dungeon with unstable mana storms could be even more dangerous.

"How many people have entered?"

"Thirty-two."

"And returned?"

"Seven."

The room became quiet.

Kang Min-seok frowned.

"That's why it's still classified as unexplored."

Subin looked at the map again.

"What happened to the others?"

The official answered carefully.

"Some were killed by monsters. Some were separated from their teams. A few simply disappeared from the Association's tracking system."

Subin didn't react strongly.

He understood the danger.

But there was another question.

"Why are you showing this to me?"

The official smiled faintly.

"Because you're A rank now."

"That doesn't explain it."

"You're being considered for the next expedition."

Subin looked toward Yerin.

She had entered the observation area without him noticing.

"You're leading it?" he asked.

Yerin nodded.

"The Association wants a small team."

"How small?"

"Eight combat Awakeners. Three support members."

Subin considered the number.

"Why so few?"

"Because the larger teams become difficult to manage inside the dungeon. The environment changes too quickly. During the previous expedition, one group of twelve was separated within eight minutes."

Subin looked back at the map.

"What is the objective?"

"Not conquest."

Yerin's answer was immediate.

"Then?"

"Mapping."

Subin nodded.

That made sense.

They didn't know enough about the dungeon to clear it.

The first objective would be understanding its structure.

"How deep do you want to go?"

"As far as we safely can."

Subin smiled.

"That's vague."

"It's supposed to be."

Yerin folded her arms.

"We're not going to pretend we know what lies inside."

Subin appreciated that.

The Association had learned something from the Indian dungeon.

The world could no longer be measured only through existing categories.

New environments were appearing.

New monsters were adapting.

Humanity's knowledge was always one step behind.

Subin looked at the map again.

"When?"

"Five days."

He nodded.

"I'll join."

Kang Min-seok looked at him.

"You really don't hesitate."

"I've been wanting to enter a stronger dungeon."

"Blackstone isn't simply stronger."

Subin glanced at him.

"I know."

"It killed A-rank teams."

"I know."

Kang sighed.

"You're either extremely brave or extremely stupid."

Subin smiled.

"Probably neither."

Park Jae-hyun chuckled.

"Then what are you?"

Subin looked at Simple Edge.

"A swordsman."

---

Five days later, the team gathered at the Blackstone Dungeon entrance.

The entrance itself looked nothing like the Indian dungeon.

There was no blue tear.

No obvious distortion.

Instead, a massive black stone arch stood in the middle of a barren valley.

The structure looked ancient.

It wasn't part of any known human construction.

No symbols covered its surface.

No inscription explained who had built it.

It simply existed.

Mana flowed around the arch like wind.

Subin stood several meters away, observing it.

Eight combat Awakeners.

Three support members.

Han Yerin was the expedition leader.

Kang Min-seok had joined as the primary close-range fighter.

Park Jae-hyun was the second swordsman.

The remaining members included a healer, an elemental mage, an archer, a tank, an assassin, a mana researcher, and two support specialists.

Subin recognized most of them from Association records.

None were weak.

Every combat member was at least A rank.

That alone made the expedition far stronger than the previous Indian team.

Yet nobody looked relaxed.

The dungeon had a reputation.

Yerin approached Subin.

"Ready?"

"Yes."

"Anything unusual?"

Subin looked at the entrance.

"Not yet."

"You sound disappointed."

"No."

He paused.

"I just expected more."

Yerin laughed.

"Wait until we're inside."

The team crossed the threshold.

The world changed.

There was no transition.

One moment they stood beneath the open sky.

The next, they were inside a vast stone corridor.

The floor extended hundreds of meters ahead.

The walls were black.

Not dark gray.

Not ordinary stone.

Black.

The mana here was dense but strangely quiet.

The researcher checked his equipment.

"Mana concentration is approximately three times higher than outside."

The mage looked around.

"Only three?"

"At this moment."

A faint vibration passed through the ground.

The instruments immediately changed.

"Four times."

Another vibration.

"Seven."

Everyone became alert.

Then the increase stopped.

The researcher stared at his readings.

"Back to three."

Kang Min-seok tightened his grip on his axe.

"So that's a mana storm."

Yerin nodded.

"Everyone stay close."

They moved forward.

For the first twenty minutes, nothing attacked them.

The corridor eventually opened into a huge chamber.

There were dozens of stone pillars.

Between them grew strange plants with black leaves.

The healer whispered, "Are those alive?"

The researcher approached carefully.

"Yes."

He scanned one.

Then his expression changed.

"These plants are absorbing mana directly from the air."

Subin looked around.

He could feel it too.

The entire ecosystem was different from the Indian dungeon.

There was no obvious mana river.

No giant crystal formation.

Mana itself seemed to be the resource.

The plants absorbed it.

The plants were eaten by monsters.

The monsters absorbed the same environmental mana.

Everything competed for the same energy.

A sound came from the darkness.

The team immediately formed defensive positions.

Something emerged between the pillars.

It looked like a wolf.

But its body was covered with thin black plates.

Its eyes glowed silver.

Then another appeared.

Then another.

The researcher checked his device.

"Monster identification failed."

Yerin raised her spear.

"Estimated level?"

"Seventy-four."

Kang Min-seok grinned.

"That's manageable."

The wolves attacked.

The first one rushed toward the tank.

The tank blocked it.

The impact pushed him backward.

The second wolf attacked from the side.

An arrow struck its shoulder.

The mage followed with a concentrated blast.

The creature staggered.

Subin moved.

Simple Edge flashed once.

The wolf's head separated cleanly from its body.

[Blackplate Wolf defeated.]

[Level: 76]

Subin frowned.

"Seventy-six."

The researcher looked at him.

"What?"

"The reading said seventy-four."

The researcher checked his equipment.

"That's impossible."

Another wolf attacked.

Subin cut through its foreleg.

The creature didn't retreat.

Instead, its body suddenly absorbed the surrounding mana.

Its wounds began closing.

The researcher shouted, "It's regenerating!"

Subin watched carefully.

The regeneration wasn't the important part.

Something else was happening.

The black plates covering the creature's body were changing.

They became thicker.

Its muscles tightened.

Its claws lengthened.

[Environmental Adaptation detected.]

[Blackplate Wolf is adapting to external threat.]

Subin's eyes sharpened.

Again.

The dungeon was evolving its monsters.

But this time the process was immediate.

The wolf lunged.

Subin avoided it.

Its claws struck the stone floor.

The impact shattered the ground.

Subin stepped forward.

He could have killed it immediately.

Instead, he waited.

The wolf changed its stance.

Its next attack was faster.

Subin dodged.

Another change.

The creature began anticipating his movement.

Subin smiled.

"You learn quickly."

The wolf attacked again.

This time, Subin changed his decision midway.

The creature adjusted.

But not quickly enough.

There.

A transition.

The instant the wolf changed from one movement to another, its mana circulation shifted.

Subin's sword moved.

One cut.

The creature fell.

[Blackplate Wolf defeated.]

[Sword Intent: 87% → 87.2%]

A tiny increase.

Subin wasn't surprised.

The battle had reinforced what he already understood.

The dungeon wasn't simply producing stronger monsters.

It was forcing adaptation through environmental pressure.

The expedition continued.

After another hour, the corridor began descending.

The walls became wider.

The mana became denser.

Then the first mana storm arrived.

There was no warning.

The air suddenly compressed.

Every Awakener felt it.

The tank dropped to one knee.

The mage struggled to breathe.

The healer immediately activated a defensive barrier.

Subin remained standing.

His Sword Intent reacted instinctively.

Simple Edge vibrated faintly.

The system appeared.

[Mana Storm detected.]

[Environmental Mana Density: 312%.]

[Warning: Rapid environmental change.]

Subin looked ahead.

The black stone corridor was changing.

Cracks appeared along the walls.

The floor shifted.

Several stone pillars collapsed.

And beneath them, something enormous moved.

The team immediately regrouped.

Yerin raised her spear.

"Everyone prepare!"

The ground exploded.

A gigantic creature emerged.

It resembled a rhinoceros covered in black stone armor.

But its body was nearly eight meters long.

Crystals grew from its back.

Its horn was surrounded by compressed mana.

The researcher looked at his device.

His face went pale.

"Level ninety-two."

Kang Min-seok gripped his axe.

"Rank?"

The researcher swallowed.

"A+."

The creature roared.

The mana storm intensified.

Its body began changing.

The crystals on its back multiplied.

Its armor thickened.

The researcher stared at the readings.

"Level ninety-three..."

Another surge.

"Ninety-four."

Yerin shouted, "Don't let it absorb more mana!"

The team attacked.

The mage released a massive fire spell.

The archer fired enchanted arrows.

Kang Min-seok charged.

Park Jae-hyun moved alongside him.

The monster ignored most of the attacks.

Its horn struck the ground.

A wave of compressed mana exploded outward.

The entire team was thrown backward.

Subin landed on his feet.

He looked at the creature.

Its mana was moving strangely.

Not like the Mana Reversal Beast.

Not reversing.

Compressing.

Every mana storm was forcing the creature to alter its internal circulation.

It was adapting to the storm itself.

Subin tightened his grip on Simple Edge.

He finally understood why the Association had failed to explore this dungeon.

The dungeon wasn't simply filled with powerful monsters.

The environment itself was strengthening them.

The creature charged.

Subin stepped forward.

He didn't run from it.

He watched.

The horn moved.

Mana compressed.

The creature accelerated.

Its weight shifted.

Its mana shifted.

Subin waited for the transition.

Then he smiled.

"Found it."

Simple Edge moved.

The blade struck the precise moment the creature's mana changed from compression to acceleration.

The cut passed through the horn.

The massive creature stumbled.

Subin continued forward.

One more cut.

The black armor split.

The creature collapsed.

Silence returned to the chamber.

The system appeared.

[Blackstone Hornbeast defeated.]

[Level: 94]

[Rank: A+]

[Mana Core detected.]

[Purity: 96.1%]

[Stored Mana: 88,420]

Subin looked at the corpse.

Then at the still-active mana storm.

His expression became serious.

The dungeon had already taught him something valuable.

In ordinary dungeons, monsters adapted to the environment.

Here, the environment itself was constantly changing.

That meant every battle could become stronger than the one before it.

Yerin walked over.

"Subin."

He turned.

She looked deeper into the dungeon.

"The path continues."

Subin nodded.

Far ahead, beyond the collapsed chamber, the black corridor opened into a vast underground landscape.

There were mountains.

Forests.

Rivers of glowing mana.

And countless lights moving in the darkness.

The dungeon wasn't a series of rooms.

It was an entire world.

The researcher stared at the readings.

"That's impossible."

"What?" Yerin asked.

He pointed toward the depths.

"There's no way this much space exists beneath the surface."

Subin looked at the enormous underground horizon.

For the first time since entering Blackstone Dungeon, he smiled.

Not because he had found an enemy.

Because he had found a place where his sword could continue to grow.

The system appeared.

[Blackstone Dungeon exploration progress: 19%.]

[Environmental adaptation rate increasing.]

[Sword God Class Evolution: 78%.]

Subin dismissed the notifications.

Then he stepped forward.

The expedition followed.

Behind them, the entrance slowly disappeared into the darkness.

Ahead waited an entire underground world.

And somewhere within it were monsters strong enough to push an A-rank Awakener beyond everything he currently understood.

Subin raised Simple Edge.

"Let's continue."
