Sword God
220 - The Siege of Stonehaven
Stonehaven had closed its gates before Subin's team reached the outer walls.
The fortified town occupied a narrow pass between two rocky ridges, its stone buildings clustered around an old fortress overlooking the northern road. Iron-reinforced gates barred the main entrance, and archers watched from the battlements. Beyond the walls, abandoned supply carts littered the road, while several damaged wagons had been pushed into a ditch to clear a narrow path for incoming travelers.
A horn sounded as the expedition approached.
"Stop where you are!" a guard called from above. "State your affiliation and purpose."
Subin raised his Association identification. "An expedition travelling north. We came from Redwater and need to pass through Stonehaven."
The guard examined the insignia before disappearing from the battlement. A few minutes later, a narrow gate opened, and a heavily armored woman emerged with six soldiers.
"I'm Commander Vessa," she said. "Stonehaven's northern defenses are under my authority. If you're here to trade, you'll have to wait. If you're here to help, follow me."
"What happened?" Yerin asked.
"Something is attacking our eastern quarry. The quarry supplies the stone we need to repair the outer wall, and the creatures have already destroyed two extraction platforms. We sent a squad to drive them away, but only three soldiers returned."
"How many creatures?" Subin asked.
"We don't know. The survivors reported several armored beasts and one larger creature capable of breaking through solid rock."
Ara glanced toward the ridge beyond the eastern wall. "Have the attacks been happening at regular intervals?"
"No. Sometimes we hear nothing for hours. Then the quarry shakes, and another section collapses."
"Have you evacuated the workers?"
"Most of them. Five are still missing, and the eastern tunnel is too unstable for our guards to enter."
Subin looked toward the damaged wagons. "We'll inspect the quarry. Keep your soldiers away from the unstable tunnels until we understand what's happening."
Vessa led them through the town and out of a smaller eastern gate. The route to the quarry passed beneath a stone arch and followed a narrow ledge along the ridge. They found evidence of the fighting almost immediately: broken mining tools, deep gouges in the rock, and a toppled transport platform whose cables hung over the ravine.
The quarry entrance had partially collapsed, but a narrow passage remained open.
Ara examined the stone around it. "The damage is concentrated below the surface. Something has been moving through the rock rather than approaching from the road."
"Another burrower?" Jae-hyun asked.
"Possibly. But the fractures are too wide for the creatures we encountered at Redwater."
Subin drew Simple Edge and entered the passage.
The tunnel descended into a broad excavation chamber. Mining carts stood overturned near the walls, and abandoned lamps illuminated several deep grooves running across the floor. At the far end, a section of rock had broken away, exposing a much larger natural cavern.
A metallic scrape echoed from the darkness.
Three creatures emerged from behind the broken stone. Their bodies resembled thick-shelled lizards, with grey mineral plates covering their backs and powerful limbs ending in blunt claws. They were smaller than the Rivergrave Burrower but moved quickly across the uneven ground.
Ara's scanner identified them as Level 224–231 A-rank: Shatterhide Crawlers.
The first Crawler charged directly at Subin. He sidestepped its impact and cut across the softer tissue beneath its foreleg. The creature stumbled, giving Yerin an opening to drive her spear through the gap in its armor. It collapsed before the other two reached them.
Liu Wei intercepted the second, redirecting its charge into a stone pillar. The impact cracked its shell, and Jae-hyun finished it with a powerful cut to the exposed neck.
The third creature retreated into the cavern.
Subin followed only far enough to confirm that it was not leading them toward an ambush. The creature disappeared through a narrow crack, and the sound of its claws faded into the rock.
"Let it go for now," Ara said. "The cavern is unstable, and we don't know how far the passages extend."
Subin agreed. Their purpose was to rescue the missing workers and identify the source of the collapse, not chase every creature into unknown tunnels.
They continued deeper into the excavation chamber, following a trail of broken equipment. Near an overturned cart, they found a bloodied glove and several fresh footprints leading toward a side passage. The passage ended at a fallen stone slab, behind which someone was striking metal against rock.
"Is anyone there?" Yerin called.
A voice answered weakly. "We're trapped!"
Five workers were sheltering in a pocket beyond the collapse. They had escaped the initial attack but become trapped when the ceiling fell. One had a fractured leg, and another was suffering from dehydration.
Rafael and Liu Wei helped clear loose debris while Ara checked the stone supports. Subin used Simple Edge to cut away a protruding section that prevented the slab from shifting, allowing the others to move it without bringing down the remaining ceiling.
The workers emerged one by one. Their foreman, an older man named Pellan, explained that the quarry had been operating normally until the ground beneath the deepest extraction platform began to tremble. The first Crawler appeared through a crack in the rock, followed by several others.
Then the larger creature arrived.
"It didn't chase us," Pellan said while Rafael checked his injuries. "It went straight for the support columns. Every time it struck the ground, another section of the quarry broke apart."
"Did it have armor like the others?" Subin asked.
"Yes, but much thicker. Its head was covered in a ridge of stone, and its claws were enormous."
Ara looked toward the cavern. "It may be using the quarry's supports to break into the deeper rock."
"Or the supports are simply in its way," Yerin said.
"Either way, we need to see it before the entire quarry collapses."
They escorted the rescued workers to the entrance, where Vessa's soldiers took charge of them. The commander wanted to send a squad back into the cavern immediately, but Subin refused.
"Your soldiers don't know what they're facing. Give us time to identify the larger creature. Keep everyone outside the excavation zone."
Vessa reluctantly agreed.
The team returned to the cavern with a clearer understanding of the danger. Ara identified a trail of fractured stone leading beneath the deepest platform. The smaller Crawlers had used the cracks to move between the quarry and a natural tunnel, but the larger creature had widened the passages through sheer force.
They found it beside a massive stone column.
The creature stood nearly nine meters tall, its body protected by layered grey plates that resembled overlapping slabs of granite. A thick ridge ran from its forehead to the base of its neck, and its forelimbs ended in claws shaped for tearing apart rock. Each movement sent small fragments tumbling from the ceiling.
The scanner displayed Level 269 A-rank: Quarrybreaker Behemoth.
It struck the column again.
A deep fracture spread through the stone, and the platform above them shuddered.
"That column supports the eastern lift," Ara warned. "If it falls, the upper section will collapse into this chamber."
Subin studied the creature's armor. The plates were thickest around its head and shoulders, where it absorbed the impact of its attacks. Its underbelly was less protected, but reaching it would require surviving a charge powerful enough to shatter the floor.
He waited until the Behemoth turned toward them.
"Get the workers' route clear. I'll keep it away from the column."
Yerin remained close enough to intervene, while Jae-hyun and Liu Wei prepared to draw the smaller Crawlers away if they returned. Rafael moved toward the damaged platform to help Ara assess the supports.
The Behemoth charged.
Subin met it with a diagonal cut aimed at the front leg, but the blade slid across the stone plates and left only a shallow mark. The impact forced him several steps backward. Rather than attempt the same strike again, he changed his angle and waited for the creature to plant its weight.
When it swung its head toward him, Subin cut into the narrow seam behind its jaw. The strike penetrated, drawing dark blood, but the Behemoth's counterattack came too quickly for a second blow. Its forelimb smashed into the ground, throwing Subin against a broken cart.
Yerin's spear struck the wounded seam, widening the injury. The Behemoth turned toward her, giving Subin enough time to recover and move clear of its claws.
The creature's next charge was slower. Its damaged leg could no longer support the full force of its movement, and its head dipped whenever it attempted to strike.
Subin recognized the opening. He moved toward the injured side, drew the Behemoth into another charge, then stepped past its lowered head at the last moment. Simple Edge cut across the exposed joint beneath the jaw and continued into the neck.
The Behemoth crashed against the cavern floor.
Its claws scraped stone as it tried to rise, but Subin's final strike severed the connection between its head and torso. The enormous creature fell still, and the tremors in the chamber subsided.
Ara immediately checked the damaged column.
"The pressure has stopped," she said. "But the support is cracked. Nobody should operate the lift until it's reinforced."
The smaller Crawlers had vanished into the natural tunnels. Subin did not pursue them. With the largest creature dead and the immediate danger reduced, the quarry workers could seal the unstable passages and inspect the remaining chambers under controlled conditions.
They returned to the surface carrying the Behemoth's core and several intact mineral plates. Vessa listened as Subin explained that the creature had been attacking the quarry's support structures, though they could not establish whether it was deliberately targeting the mining operation or simply forcing its way through the rock.
"Can the quarry reopen?" she asked.
"Not immediately," Ara replied. "The eastern lift is damaged, and the deeper tunnels need inspection. The creatures may have left other passages behind."
Vessa looked toward the fortress walls. "Without the quarry, we can't complete the repairs before winter."
"Then start with the safest sections," Subin said. "You have workers who know the quarry better than we do. Let them identify stable ground while your guards seal the damaged entrances. Don't send another squad underground until the supports are checked."
Vessa considered the advice before nodding. She ordered the quarry closed temporarily and arranged for the recovered materials to be stored in the fortress. The stone plates could be used to reinforce the outer wall, but the core would be examined by the town's specialists before anyone attempted to extract its remaining mana.
That evening, Stonehaven opened its gates to the expedition and provided rooms in the inner barracks. The rescued workers were reunited with their families, and Pellan promised to help Vessa's engineers identify the sections that could be salvaged.
Subin spent part of the evening examining the Behemoth's core with Ara. Unlike the concentrated amber crystal inside the Ironwood Colossus, this core contained no clear network of roots or branches. Its mana was dense and compressed, likely adapted to the creature's ability to survive underground pressure.
"It was strong enough to break through the quarry," Ara said, "but I don't think it was trying to destroy Stonehaven itself."
"Neither do I. The quarry was simply in its path."
"That doesn't make the damage less serious."
"No. It only tells us what to prepare for next time."
Yerin, who had been listening from the doorway, joined them at the table. "You keep separating the danger from the creature's intention."
"Because they aren't the same thing," Subin replied. "A creature can be dangerous without being malicious. But if it threatens people, we still have to act."
She rested a hand on his shoulder before looking at the core. "And sometimes acting means killing it."
"Sometimes."
There was no disagreement between them, only the understanding that each encounter demanded its own answer.
The following morning, Vessa provided a copy of Stonehaven's northern route chart. Beyond the pass, the road split toward two settlements: the western branch led to a mining town called Greyrock, while the eastern branch continued into the highlands toward a larger trade center.
Greyrock had sent no caravans for nearly two weeks. Vessa had assumed the delay was caused by the damaged quarry roads, but after the recent attacks, she was no longer certain.
Subin chose the western branch.
Before leaving, he advised Vessa to keep the quarry closed until the supports had been inspected and the natural tunnels mapped. She thanked him, then returned to the work of restoring Stonehaven's defenses.
The expedition departed with the Behemoth's core secured and the missing workers safely home. Behind them, Stonehaven began repairing the damage, while the northern road opened toward Greyrock.
The next settlement was waiting for them, and so were the consequences of a trade route that had gone silent.
