Sword God
213 - The Road Beneath Ironvein
Ironvein's engineers spent the next two days reinforcing the northern mine entrance and repairing the lift mechanism. Tessa's return also gave the council its first reliable account of what had happened to the missing survey crew. Two miners had died during the collapse, but three others had escaped through an upper passage and were later found by a rescue party.
Subin's team used the time to recover, inspect their equipment, and study the maps Tessa had preserved. The deeper tunnels remained dangerous, so the council agreed to postpone further mining until a larger survey could be organized.
Subin had no intention of waiting indefinitely.
On the third morning, he met Commander Elira at the northern gate. She handed him a newly prepared map showing the safest known route through the Grey Expanse and the locations of the passages connected to the Deep Veins.
"The council has decided to reopen the upper trade road under guard," she said. "The lower mines will remain closed, but your team can continue north. If you find another settlement, we'd appreciate information about its condition."
"We'll share what we discover," Subin replied.
Elira gave him a small metal token stamped with Ironvein's insignia. It would identify the group as authorized travelers and allow them to request assistance from Ironvein's outposts.
Jae-hyun turned the token over in his hand. "We've collected quite a few of these lately."
"Try not to lose this one," Yerin said.
"I haven't lost any."
"You left the Kharan river token in your room."
Jae-hyun paused. "I knew there was something I meant to pack."
Liu Wei laughed as they passed through the gate.
The road north followed a ridge above the Grey Expanse. Their route was easier than the one they had taken on the way to Ironvein, and by midday they had passed beyond the damaged waystations. The metallic cliffs gradually gave way to dark hills cut by narrow ravines, while the crystal light overhead became dimmer.
Nessa had returned to the Hollow March, so Kellan accompanied the expedition for the first part of the journey. He knew little about the territory beyond the ridge, but he could identify the old markers and distinguish the original road from the paths made by burrowing creatures.
Near a ravine, he stopped beside a broken stone post.
"This marks the last maintained section. Beyond it, the road divides. One branch descends toward the Deep Veins, and the other continues north."
Ara checked the map. "The northern route should reach the settlement mentioned in Ironvein's older records. The name is damaged, but the last few letters match the inscription we found."
"Ironvein never confirmed that it still existed," Kellan said.
"Then we'll confirm it ourselves," Subin replied.
They continued north, leaving the old mining routes behind.
The ravine narrowed until the road passed between two steep rock faces. Fresh claw marks covered one wall, and several boulders had been dragged from the path. Subin examined the damage but found no sign of a recent collapse.
Something had passed through the ravine, though it had not disturbed the road enough to make travel impossible.
They had gone only a short distance when a group of armed figures appeared on the ridge above them.
"Stop!" one called. "Leave your weapons where they are and step away from the road."
Subin halted. The figures wore layered leather armor reinforced with bone plates, and their weapons varied from spears to broad, curved blades. They looked like a patrol rather than a band of ordinary scavengers.
Kellan raised his hands. "We're authorized travelers from Ironvein."
The patrol leader descended the slope, keeping his weapon ready. He was a lean man with a scar across his cheek and a strip of red cloth tied around his left arm.
"I am Captain Rovan of the Stonewatch. Ironvein's authorization means nothing beyond its borders. Why are you traveling through our territory?"
"We're exploring the northern road," Subin said. "We don't intend to interfere with your settlement."
Rovan studied the group, then looked at the Ironvein token.
"You're the surface Awakeners who dealt with the Burrowers."
It was not a question.
"We encountered several," Subin replied.
Rovan's expression tightened. "Then you may be useful. Something has been attacking our patrols along the northern road. Two teams have disappeared, and the latest survivors reported a creature moving beneath the ground."
Ara exchanged a glance with Subin. Another burrowing creature was possible, but they had no reason to assume it was the same species.
"Where were the patrols attacked?" she asked.
Rovan pointed toward the far end of the ravine. "Near an old stone bridge. If you're willing to help, I'll take you there. Otherwise, you should turn back. We don't allow travelers to cross while the road remains unsecured."
Subin considered the request. Their original plan had been to reach the northern settlement, but a blocked route would force them to find another way around. Helping Stonewatch could provide a safer passage and information about the territory ahead.
"We'll inspect the bridge," he said. "If the threat is manageable, we'll deal with it. If not, we'll report what we find."
Rovan accepted the arrangement and led them toward the bridge.
They reached it within an hour. The structure crossed a deep crack in the ground, its central span supported by thick stone pillars. One pillar had been broken from below, leaving the bridge tilted and unsafe. Beside it lay a destroyed supply cart and several broken weapons.
Rafael examined the surviving supports. "Nobody should cross this until it's reinforced."
Rovan nodded grimly. "The first patrol disappeared while escorting supplies. The second came to investigate and lost two people. The survivors said the ground opened beneath them."
Subin crouched near the broken pillar. The stone had not been crushed from above. Deep gouges ran upward from the base, and the surrounding rock had been pushed outward.
"Whatever did this came from below," he said.
A low vibration passed through the bridge.
The patrol immediately retreated from the damaged span. Subin remained long enough to see a section of the ground rise near the far pillar, then collapse as a huge creature forced its way through.
It resembled a heavily armored centipede, though its front body was broad and plated like a shield. Rows of thick limbs gripped the stone while jagged mineral growths protruded along its back. Its head emerged from the rubble, revealing a pair of powerful mandibles.
Ara's scanner registered Level 246 — A-rank.
"Stoneburrow Ravager," she announced. "Its armor is dense, but the joints between the front segments are exposed."
The creature surged toward the bridge, sending broken stones tumbling into the crack. Subin moved to intercept it before it could reach Rovan's patrol.
The first exchange confirmed that the creature was stronger than an ordinary burrowing predator. Its forward plates deflected Subin's initial cut, and its mandibles tore through the remains of the bridge railing. Rather than contest its armored head, Subin shifted toward the damaged side where the broken pillar had forced several segments out of alignment.
He cut through the exposed joint.
Yerin followed with a spear thrust that widened the wound, forcing the Ravager to turn away from the bridge. Its movement tore another section of the ground loose, but Rafael and the Stonewatch patrol kept the debris from trapping the wounded guards near the ravine.
The creature attempted to retreat underground.
Subin recognized the danger immediately. If it escaped beneath the bridge, the remaining supports could collapse while the team was still nearby. He drove forward and severed the connection between two of its front segments, disrupting its ability to burrow.
The Ravager convulsed, then collapsed beside the broken pillar.
Subin finished it with a precise strike beneath the head. The creature's limbs gradually stopped moving, and the vibration beneath the bridge faded.
Rovan approached cautiously, staring at the dead monster.
"That thing has kept us off the road for nearly two weeks."
"Then your patrols can return once the bridge is repaired," Subin said. "But the damaged supports need more than a quick patch."
Rovan agreed. Stonewatch would send engineers to assess the bridge and search the nearby tunnels for signs of additional creatures. In return for the expedition's help, he offered them an escort through the next stretch of territory.
Before leaving, Ara examined the Ravager's mineral plates. The crystals along its back were less concentrated than those found in the Deep Veins, but the creature's segmented armor was unusually durable. Ironvein's smiths might be able to use the material, though transporting the entire carcass would be impractical.
They collected several samples and continued north with Rovan's escort.
By evening, the ravine opened into a broad valley. Unlike the Grey Expanse, this region contained patches of hardy vegetation growing between dark stone outcrops. Small streams ran through the valley floor, and distant lights marked the presence of an inhabited settlement.
Rovan pointed toward the lights.
"That is Stonewatch's main outpost. Beyond it, the northern road leads toward a territory called the Ashen Reach. Few people travel there now, but the road once connected several settlements."
"Why did they stop using it?" Yerin asked.
"Some settlements were abandoned. Others closed their gates. The Ashen Reach itself is still inhabited, as far as we know, but communication has become unreliable."
Subin looked toward the distant outpost. The Great Passage was not a single chain of isolated dungeons. It was a world of settlements, trade routes, natural dangers, and communities whose fortunes depended on the paths connecting them.
He had already seen how quickly a blocked route could affect people who had never encountered the creature responsible.
At the outpost, Stonewatch's officers received Rovan's report and arranged rooms for the expedition. The captain also gave Subin a local map, marking the route through the Ashen Reach and the last known position of its northern settlement.
There was no lengthy council meeting and no demand for the team to solve every problem in the region. Stonewatch simply wanted its road reopened, and the expedition had earned the right to continue north.
Later that night, Subin stood outside the outpost and watched the distant lights scattered across the valley. Yerin joined him, carrying two cups of hot tea.
"You seem pleased," she said.
"We've made progress."
"We've fought three burrowing creatures, rescued a miner, and spent most of the day helping people repair a road."
"And made it farther north."
Yerin handed him a cup. "I suppose that counts."
He smiled and took it.
Tomorrow, they would cross the valley and enter the Ashen Reach. Beyond it lay another stretch of the Great Passage, with its own inhabitants, dangers, and opportunities.
Subin finished his tea, secured Simple Edge at his waist, and returned inside.
The road north was open again.
