Sword God
208 - The Matriarch's Domain
The expedition reached the western cavern before midday. Behind them, Kharad's river watch had begun securing the crossings, while Varek and the other hunters remained near the settlement to coordinate the defenses. Subin's group carried only what they needed for the confrontation: weapons, medical supplies, and Ara's updated map of the colony's territory.
At the entrance to the nesting cavern, the first signs of change were immediately visible. Several of the smaller insects that had previously occupied the outer tunnels were gone, and fresh tracks led deeper into the colony. The Matriarch had reorganized its defenders after their last encounter, leaving the approach unusually quiet.
Jae-hyun studied the tracks. "Either it remembers us, or it has something more important to protect."
"Probably both," Liu Wei replied.
They advanced without wasting time on empty passages. At the nesting chamber, they found the abandoned egg cluster beneath the rock shelf, guarded by a handful of smaller insects. The creatures attacked as soon as the expedition appeared, but Subin's team cleared the entrance quickly and continued toward the broad cavern beyond.
The Cavern Brood Matriarch was waiting near the river.
Its damaged forelimb still hung awkwardly, and one antenna had been severed near its base. The injuries had not healed, though the creature had adapted its movements to compensate. Around it, the colony gathered in a loose formation, filling the ledges and cracks along the cavern walls.
Subin stepped forward before the swarm could advance.
"Rafael, hold the entrance. Yerin, take the left ledge with Liu Wei. Jae-hyun, stay mobile and keep the smaller ones from surrounding us."
The team moved into position. Subin kept his attention on the Matriarch, whose dark eyes followed his sword.
The creature struck first, charging across the cavern floor with its remaining forelimbs. Subin waited until it committed to the attack, then moved past its head and cut into the damaged shoulder joint. The wound reopened, forcing the Matriarch to turn away from the direct approach.
Rather than pursuing it, Subin stepped back into the open ground. He wanted the creature away from the narrow passages where the colony could surround his team, and the Matriarch's anger made it willing to follow him.
It came at him again.
This time, Subin used the uneven ground to his advantage. He slipped between two raised stone ridges, forcing the Matriarch to turn sharply. Its broad body struck one ridge, and the impact disrupted its footing long enough for Subin to deliver a clean cut beneath the forward armor. Simple Edge penetrated the softer tissue, and the creature recoiled with a harsh clicking roar.
The surrounding insects surged toward him.
Yerin intercepted them before they could reach Subin, her spear sweeping across the ledge to force the creatures back. Liu Wei covered her exposed side, while Jae-hyun moved between the rock pillars, preventing smaller groups from reaching Rafael's position. Their coordination kept the battle focused on the Matriarch instead of allowing the entire colony to dictate the pace.
The Matriarch backed toward the river, then abruptly turned and struck the ground with its head. A vibration passed through the cavern, and the smaller insects scattered into the cracks along the floor.
Subin recognized the movement from their previous encounter. The creature was trying to withdraw into the deeper tunnels, where its size and knowledge of the terrain would give it an advantage.
He could have pursued it, but the retreat would draw his team into narrow passages filled with hidden routes and unstable rock. Instead, he cut across its path, forcing it to remain in the main cavern.
The Matriarch swung its tail toward him. Subin jumped clear, landed beside a broken pillar, and drove Simple Edge into the exposed joint where the tail met its armored body. The cut did not sever the limb, but it weakened the connection enough to disrupt the creature's balance.
Rafael advanced from the entrance, pushing back the insects that had begun gathering behind the Matriarch. The creature now had fewer routes available, and its injuries were beginning to affect its movements. It turned toward Subin with its mandibles spread, preparing to charge once more.
Subin lowered his center of gravity and watched its front limbs.
The Matriarch lunged.
He moved toward it rather than away, passing beneath the sweep of its head and cutting through the gap beneath its chest armor. The strike carried his sword intent into the wound, disrupting the flow of mana that reinforced the creature's body. Its forward momentum faltered, and it crashed onto the stone floor.
Before it could recover, Subin placed Simple Edge against the vulnerable joint beneath its neck.
"Enough."
The Matriarch struggled once, its claws scraping across the rock, then became still. The remaining insects stopped advancing. Some withdrew into the surrounding tunnels, while others remained near the fallen creature, their movements confused and uncoordinated.
Subin withdrew his sword but kept it ready. He watched the colony for several moments before Ara confirmed that no large group was approaching from the side passages.
The Cavern Brood Matriarch was defeated.
Its body remained intact, though the wounds Subin had inflicted had disrupted the mana circulation sustaining its armored defenses. Ara's scanner showed that the colony's coordinated movements had broken apart, leaving the surviving insects to scatter through the tunnels rather than move as a single force.
Yerin approached Subin, looking at the Matriarch before checking the bruising on his leg.
"You finally decided to finish it."
"It gave me a clear opening."
"Of course. Nothing to do with the fact that it tried to crush you twice."
Subin sheathed Simple Edge. "That may have influenced my decision."
She smiled and gave his shoulder a light push before turning to help Rafael secure the cavern entrance.
Ara and the guides began marking the tunnels while Liu Wei and Jae-hyun checked the surrounding ledges. They found several smaller nests, but none contained another creature comparable to the Matriarch. The colony would not disappear overnight, yet its most powerful member could no longer direct the swarm toward Kharad.
The expedition returned to the settlement before evening.
Elder Maresh received the news in the council hall, where the river captains had gathered to review the defenses. When Subin confirmed the Matriarch's defeat, several of the Kharan exchanged relieved looks. The hunters who had lost access to the western grounds would now be able to resume their work once the remaining passages had been checked.
Maresh thanked the expedition and offered the team a share of the colony's recovered materials. Subin accepted only what his group had earned during the operation, leaving the rest for Kharad's workers and hunters. The decision pleased the elder, who had been concerned that outside Awakeners might claim the best resources after helping with the colony.
That evening, the settlement held a modest gathering near the river. Workers brought food from the safer hunting grounds, and the river watch lowered its alert level for the first time in weeks. Varek raised a cup toward Subin and his companions, while Saren, the wounded hunter, appeared without his previous limp and joined the celebration.
Yerin sat beside Subin on the stone steps overlooking the water. The lamps reflected across the current, and the sounds of conversation carried through the settlement.
"Another region added to your growing list of places where people owe you favors," she said.
"I didn't ask them to owe me anything."
"That has never stopped people from deciding they do."
Subin watched the river for a moment. "Then perhaps we should leave before they find another reason to keep us here."
"Tomorrow?"
"After Ara finishes the map."
Yerin laughed. "I knew there would be another map."
For once, there was no immediate threat demanding their attention. The Kharan had regained access to their hunting grounds, the western passages were being secured, and the expedition had established a useful connection between Kharad and the wider underground river system.
The following morning, Ara completed the revised map and transmitted a copy to Sel at Crossroads. The newly surveyed route would allow future expeditions to travel between Underpass and Kharad without crossing the most dangerous sections of the western cavern. Local guides would accompany the first few groups until the route became familiar.
Subin prepared to leave with his team, carrying the river-stone token Varek had given him. The Kharan had offered to arrange a permanent trading agreement with Crossroads, and Sel had already expressed interest in sending merchants through the new route. What had begun as an exploration of an abandoned mine had become a practical connection between two communities.
As the expedition passed beneath the last crystal arch, Subin glanced back at the river one final time. The Cavern Brood Matriarch was gone, but the Great Passage stretched far beyond the territories they had mapped. Somewhere ahead lay new civilizations, stronger opponents, and sword techniques he had yet to encounter.
He adjusted Simple Edge at his waist and continued toward Crossroads.
There was still a long way to go before he could call himself the greatest swordsman in the world.
