Sword God
197 - The Fallen Islands
The first floating island broke apart without warning.
A deep crack raced across its surface, splitting the silver grassland from one edge to the other. Trees tilted toward the clouds, their enormous roots tearing free from the soil as chunks of stone began falling into the blue expanse below. The people standing on the city bridge immediately understood what was happening. Bells rang from tower to tower, and within moments the orderly streets of the floating settlement transformed into a controlled evacuation.
The armored woman who had spoken to Subin turned toward the city.
"Begin the eastern evacuation. Move the lower districts first."
Several warriors immediately obeyed.
Subin watched the island collapse.
"What's causing that?"
"We don't know," she replied. "But if the disturbance reaches the central islands, the city will lose its support."
Ara looked at her scanner.
"Support?"
The woman finally introduced herself.
"I am Commander Lyra, guardian of Aetheris."
She pointed toward the enormous city behind her.
"Aetheris is built around the largest stable cluster in Skyreach. The islands are not naturally independent. They are connected through a deep mana circulation system beneath the region."
Subin looked at the collapsing island.
"So something is disrupting that circulation."
"Yes."
Ara immediately understood.
"Like the regulators we've seen elsewhere."
Lyra's expression changed slightly.
"You have encountered them?"
"Several."
Ara quickly explained their discoveries in the Frozen Region, Volcanic Region, Eastwatch, and the underground channels connected to Crossroads.
Lyra listened carefully.
When Ara finished, the commander looked toward the eastern horizon.
"Then your arrival explains why the disturbance has accelerated."
Subin frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the seventh gate opened directly above one of our secondary routes."
She pointed toward the floating islands.
"The moment your gate stabilized, the eastern circulation changed."
Yerin exchanged a glance with Subin.
"Are you saying Earth caused this?"
"No."
Lyra shook her head.
"Your gate is connected to an existing network. It did not create the network. But adding another external connection has altered the amount of mana flowing through this region."
That explanation matched what they had already observed elsewhere.
Earth was not controlling the World Dungeon.
Its growing number of connections was simply becoming another factor in an already enormous geographical system.
Subin looked toward the distant destruction.
"Then we need to understand what is happening before the city loses stability."
Lyra nodded.
"Agreed."
A violent tremor passed through the air.
The entire city shifted several meters.
People stumbled.
Several bridges twisted under the sudden change in gravity, and one of the outer towers tilted dangerously toward the clouds.
Subin moved immediately.
His sword left its sheath in a smooth arc.
A thin line of sword intent crossed the gap and struck the base of the tower.
Rather than cutting it apart, the pressure from the strike created a temporary stabilizing force along the damaged structure.
Jae-hyun understood what Subin had done.
"Hold it there!"
He and Rafael moved toward the bridge while Yerin directed civilians away from the unstable section.
Lyra raised her hand.
Several Skyreach warriors released their own abilities, creating overlapping barriers around the tower.
For several seconds, the structure remained suspended.
Then the ground beneath them shifted again.
The tower settled.
Subin withdrew his sword.
Lyra looked at him with renewed interest.
"You used sword energy to stabilize a structure."
"It's faster than building another support."
She almost smiled.
"You really do think about swords differently."
Subin didn't answer.
Ara had already moved toward the city's central tower.
"There!"
A crystalline structure embedded inside the tower was flashing irregularly.
"That's part of the regional circulation system."
Lyra followed her.
"The central regulator."
Ara nodded.
"It isn't damaged physically. The flow entering it is fluctuating."
Subin looked toward the eastern sky.
The enormous shadow that had caused the evacuation was still moving between the islands.
They finally got a clearer view.
It was a creature unlike anything they had encountered on Earth.
Its body resembled a massive serpent, but four enormous wings extended from its sides. Long crystalline fins ran along its back, and every movement caused clouds of glowing particles to scatter through the sky.
The system identified it.
Skybreaker Wyvern
Level 247
Rank: A+
The creature passed beneath a floating island.
The island immediately tilted.
Several smaller islands shifted with it.
Rafael stared.
"It's not attacking anything."
"No," Ara said.
"It's affecting the gravity field simply by moving."
Lyra's expression became grim.
"That's why we are evacuating."
The Skybreaker Wyvern wasn't deliberately attacking the city.
It was moving through a damaged region, and its enormous mana output was interacting with the unstable network.
Subin watched its flight path.
"Where is it going?"
Lyra pointed east.
"Toward the Storm Crown."
Ara immediately pulled up the local map.
"What's there?"
"The primary Skyreach regulator."
The answer changed everything.
Subin looked at the others.
"If it reaches the regulator while the network is unstable, the damage could spread through the entire region."
Lyra nodded.
"We have tried stopping it before."
"And?"
"We failed."
That wasn't surprising.
A Level 247 A+ flying creature in an environment where gravity itself was unstable was difficult enough. Fighting it above a continent of floating islands would make the situation even worse.
Subin looked toward the eastern route.
"Then we don't fight it."
Lyra turned toward him.
"What?"
"We stop it from reaching the regulator."
"How?"
Subin pointed at the islands.
"By changing its route."
Ara immediately understood.
"You want to use the floating islands as barriers."
"Not barriers. Channels."
He studied the movement of the islands and the shifting gravity between them.
The network was unstable, but it wasn't chaotic.
The islands were moving according to the flow of mana.
If they could alter several support points, they could create a safer route for the creature to follow.
Lyra stared at him for several seconds.
"That would require controlling three major circulation points."
"Can you do it?"
"Perhaps."
"Then let's move."
The expedition followed Lyra toward the first regulator.
It was located beneath a small floating island several kilometers from Aetheris.
The island was already beginning to descend.
They landed on its surface and immediately found the regulator.
Unlike the structures in the volcanic region, this one was built vertically. A column of pale crystal extended deep into the island, surrounded by rotating stone rings.
Ara examined it.
"This is still functional."
"Then why is the island falling?"
"The regulator isn't receiving enough mana."
Subin looked at the surrounding channels.
Three crystalline roots extended from the central column and disappeared into the ground.
One was completely dark.
"That one."
Ara nodded.
"Blocked."
Subin approached it.
The blockage wasn't natural.
A thick layer of hardened mineral had formed inside the channel, preventing the mana from passing through.
He drew Simple Edge.
"Everyone move back."
The sword descended once.
The cut was so precise that the mineral layer separated without damaging the crystal channel beneath it.
Mana immediately surged through the passage.
The island stopped descending.
Then it began rising.
Lyra stared at the restored regulator.
"You cut the obstruction without damaging the channel."
Subin sheathed his sword.
"That's what swords are supposed to do."
Jae-hyun laughed.
"Only you would say that after cutting through a structure buried inside a floating island."
They moved to the second regulator.
This one was functioning, but its output was too high.
Rafael and Yerin helped redirect the excess energy while Ara adjusted the control mechanism.
The third was the most difficult.
It was located beneath an island that had already begun breaking apart.
The expedition crossed the unstable gap while the fragments of the island drifted around them.
Then the Skybreaker Wyvern appeared.
It emerged from the clouds directly above them.
The creature's wings spread across the sky.
A powerful pulse of mana swept over the island.
Gravity reversed.
For a brief moment, everyone began rising.
Jae-hyun grabbed a stone outcropping.
Rafael anchored himself with his shield.
Yerin drove her spear into the ground.
Subin remained standing.
The pressure around him changed several times, but his sword intent kept his body stable.
The island began rotating.
The third regulator was exposed beneath the surface.
Ara shouted.
"The core is going to break!"
Subin looked at the creature.
The Skybreaker Wyvern wasn't attacking them.
It was trying to pass through the area.
But the unstable regulator was distorting its path.
Subin understood.
The creature wasn't the source of the problem.
It was another victim of it.
He moved.
Instead of attacking the Wyvern, Subin launched himself toward the exposed regulator.
The island rotated beneath him.
He landed beside the damaged core and immediately saw the problem.
A massive fracture had formed through the central crystal.
He could repair it, but not with force.
He placed his hand against the crystal.
The mana inside was surging in opposite directions.
Subin closed his eyes.
He felt the rhythm.
The same principle he had learned repeatedly throughout the World Dungeon was appearing again.
The environment wasn't asking for more power.
It was asking for balance.
He drew Simple Edge.
This time, he didn't cut the crystal.
He cut the mana flow around it.
Three precise sword arcs separated the conflicting currents.
The pressure dropped.
The fracture stopped expanding.
The floating island stabilized.
At that moment, the Skybreaker Wyvern changed direction.
Its enormous body curved toward the newly opened path.
It passed between the islands without touching them.
The creature continued east.
Toward the Storm Crown.
Lyra watched it disappear into the clouds.
"It changed course."
Subin looked toward the distant eastern horizon.
"The path is stable now."
Ara checked the readings.
"All three regulators are synchronized."
Then her expression changed.
"Wait."
"What?"
"The Storm Crown is receiving the redirected flow."
Subin looked at her.
"Is that bad?"
"No."
Ara stared at the readings.
"It's working."
The floating islands across the region began settling into a more stable formation.
The collapsing sections stopped descending.
The migration of the winged creatures slowed.
Even the city of Aetheris became steadier.
Lyra exhaled.
"We've been trying to understand why the Skybreaker kept moving toward the Storm Crown."
She looked at Subin.
"It wasn't trying to destroy it."
"No."
"It was trying to reach it."
Subin nodded.
"The regulator was unstable. The creature sensed the imbalance and was moving toward the strongest mana concentration."
Lyra looked toward the eastern horizon again.
"Then the creature may be helping stabilize the region."
"Maybe."
Subin wasn't willing to assume more than the evidence showed.
Ara interrupted.
"There's another problem."
Everyone turned toward her.
"The seventh gate."
"What about it?"
"The gate is still stable, but the connection is changing."
Subin walked over.
Ara displayed the readings.
The gate's stability had fallen from 92% to 84%.
Not dangerous yet.
But it was changing.
More importantly, its destination signature was no longer identical to when they entered.
Yerin frowned.
"Is the region shifting?"
Ara shook her head.
"No. The gate is adapting to the local network."
Subin looked at the map.
That meant the Earth entrance was not simply connected to one fixed point.
It had established a connection with Skyreach itself.
If the regional network changed, the exact arrival point could potentially change as well.
That was a practical problem.
They needed a stable route.
"Can we anchor it?"
Ara nodded slowly.
"There should be a way."
Lyra looked toward Aetheris.
"We have an old gate foundation beneath the city."
"How old?"
"Older than our records."
Subin looked at the others.
"Then that's where we're going."
The expedition returned to Aetheris.
Beneath the city, Lyra led them through a sealed passage that had not been used for generations.
The tunnel eventually opened into a vast underground chamber.
At its center stood an enormous circular foundation.
Unlike the regulators above, this structure had no active mana.
It was dormant.
Ara approached it carefully.
"This isn't a regulator."
Subin examined the carvings along its outer ring.
"What is it?"
Ara's expression slowly changed.
"A gate anchor."
Lyra looked at her.
"That can't be."
"Why?"
"Because according to our records, Aetheris has never had an external gate."
Ara pointed toward the foundation.
"It doesn't say external."
She traced a damaged inscription.
"It says... connection point."
Subin looked at the ancient structure.
The discovery wasn't a mystery waiting for an explanation.
It was infrastructure.
Someone had built this place long ago for a practical purpose.
And now the newly opened Earth gate had activated it.
The dormant foundation began glowing.
A thin silver line traveled around its circumference.
Ara stepped back.
"The gate is synchronizing."
Subin watched the structure come alive.
Outside, the floating islands continued moving through the blue sky.
The World Dungeon had connected Earth to another region.
And now they had found evidence that Skyreach had once been connected to places far beyond what its current inhabitants remembered.
Subin rested his hand on Simple Edge.
This time, the discovery wasn't another monster.
It was something more useful.
A stable road.
A permanent connection.
A way for Earth to enter Skyreach without relying entirely on the unstable external gate.
And if they could understand how this ancient anchor worked, the seventh entrance might become the first truly permanent route between Earth and this part of the Great Passage.
