Chapter 105 — White Valley
The White Valley expedition began before sunrise.
By five-thirty in the morning, the Association's eastern transport terminal was already crowded with Awakeners, support staff, logistics personnel, and members of several guilds. The atmosphere was different from the usual dungeon expeditions. There was no excitement from inexperienced Awakeners hoping to make quick money, and no nervous chatter from people entering a low-rank dungeon for the first time.
Everyone present understood that White Valley had been classified as an A-rank dungeon for a reason.
More importantly, its mana density was increasing.
That made it unpredictable.
Subin arrived carrying only Simple Edge and a small backpack. He looked almost too lightly equipped compared with the other members of the expedition.
Kang Min-seok was already waiting near the transport vehicle, wearing heavy combat armor and carrying his large axe.
He looked at Subin's equipment and frowned.
“That's it?”
Subin looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You're going into a changing A-rank dungeon with one sword and a backpack?”
“Yes.”
Min-seok shook his head.
“Sometimes I wonder whether you're confident or just impossible.”
“Probably both.”
Min-seok laughed.
Han Yerin arrived shortly afterward. Unlike Min-seok, she wore light combat armor designed for mobility, with her spear secured across her back.
She looked toward Subin.
“Did you sleep?”
“Enough.”
“How much?”
“Six hours.”
Min-seok immediately interrupted.
“That's more than I expected from him.”
Yerin gave him a look.
“Don't encourage him.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“You were about to.”
Min-seok grinned.
Subin looked between them.
“You two argue a lot.”
“We don't,” Yerin replied.
“We do,” Min-seok said at the same time.
Yerin sighed.
Before the conversation could continue, Choi Ara approached.
She was carrying a long staff and several magical devices attached to her belt. Unlike most mages, she didn't wear a long robe. Her equipment was designed for movement, allowing her to reposition quickly during combat.
She looked at Subin.
“You remembered what I asked yesterday?”
“Explain what I'm seeing?”
“Yes.”
“I'll try.”
Ara smiled.
“That's all I wanted.”
A few minutes later, the remaining members arrived.
Two A-rank Association Awakeners—Park Seong-hwan, a shield specialist, and Kim Mi-rae, a recovery-type Awakener—joined the group. Four B-rank combat Awakeners followed them.
Finally, Lee Jae-hyun arrived with three members of his guild.
The moment he appeared, the atmosphere became slightly heavier.
Jae-hyun's gaze passed over the group before stopping on Subin.
“You're early.”
“So are you.”
“I don't like keeping people waiting.”
Subin nodded.
“Good.”
Jae-hyun looked annoyed by the completely ordinary response.
Director Kang stepped forward before the exchange could continue.
“Listen carefully. This expedition isn't about proving who is stronger. White Valley has shown abnormal mana growth, and we need reliable information. We enter together, maintain formation, collect samples, and leave if the dungeon crosses the danger threshold.”
Everyone nodded.
Director Kang continued.
“Han Yerin is expedition leader. All formation changes go through her unless there is an immediate emergency.”
Yerin stepped forward.
“Our formation is simple. Park Seong-hwan will anchor the front. Min-seok and Subin will operate near the front but won't advance independently. I will coordinate the center. Ara and Kim Mi-rae remain behind the primary combat line. Jae-hyun's team will cover the right flank.”
Jae-hyun nodded.
Subin listened carefully.
The formation wasn't perfect, but it was functional.
More importantly, everyone knew their role.
Yerin turned toward him.
“Subin.”
“Yes?”
“If you see something unusual, tell me before acting.”
Subin nodded.
“I will.”
Min-seok looked surprised.
“That was easy.”
Subin glanced at him.
“I can follow instructions.”
“That's somehow more surprising.”
The transport vehicle departed.
White Valley was located several hundred kilometers from the Association headquarters. The journey took several hours, during which most of the Awakeners rested or reviewed the dungeon information.
Subin spent most of the trip looking through the window.
The landscape gradually changed as they approached the dungeon.
The surrounding vegetation became pale.
Then white.
By the time the transport reached the temporary Association base, almost every tree within several kilometers had developed a thin silver-white layer across its bark.
Snow covered the ground, but there was no snowfall.
That was the first thing Subin noticed.
Yerin stood beside him as they exited the vehicle.
“Cold?”
“No.”
She looked at the thermometer attached to her wrist.
“It's only twelve degrees.”
Subin nodded.
“Then why does it feel colder?”
Yerin looked around.
“Mana?”
“Probably.”
Subin closed his eyes briefly.
He could feel it.
The mana wasn't simply dense.
It was moving.
Very slowly.
Like an enormous current beneath the ground.
He opened his eyes.
“White Valley isn't producing cold.”
Ara approached.
“What do you mean?”
“The environment is being influenced by the mana.”
Ara immediately activated one of her devices.
The screen flashed several numbers.
“Mana density is already twenty-three percent higher than the last measurement.”
Jae-hyun heard her.
“That happened in less than twelve hours?”
Ara nodded.
“According to the readings.”
Jae-hyun looked toward the dungeon entrance.
“Then we shouldn't waste time.”
Yerin raised her hand.
“Formation.”
The team assembled.
The entrance to White Valley looked nothing like the usual dungeon portals.
Instead of a glowing gateway, it appeared as a huge white stone arch standing between two cliffs.
Beyond it was darkness.
Subin stared at the stone.
There were no visible inscriptions.
No obvious traps.
But the mana around the entrance was strangely organized.
He could feel three distinct currents.
One entered the dungeon.
One emerged from it.
The third moved sideways through the surrounding terrain.
He frowned slightly.
Yerin noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing dangerous.”
“Then?”
“There are three mana flows.”
Ara immediately came closer.
“Where?”
Subin pointed.
Ara looked at the ground.
“I don't see anything.”
“You won't.”
She looked at him.
“Then how do you know?”
“I can feel the direction.”
Ara stared for a moment.
“You really need to explain your sword sense someday.”
Subin nodded.
“Maybe.”
They entered.
The temperature dropped immediately.
White stone covered the walls, ceiling, and floor. Thin blue crystals grew from the surfaces, emitting enough light to illuminate the passage.
The team advanced slowly.
For the first fifteen minutes, nothing happened.
Then a low growl came from the darkness.
Park Seong-hwan raised his shield.
A creature emerged.
It looked like a wolf, but its body was covered in white stone-like armor.
Whitefang Wolf — Level 71
Several more appeared behind it.
“Eight,” Yerin said.
“Ten,” Subin corrected.
Two more emerged from above.
Min-seok grinned.
“Finally.”
The wolves charged.
The battle lasted less than a minute.
Park blocked the first impact while Min-seok's axe smashed through the second wolf's armor. Yerin moved through the opening and pierced another creature through the chest.
Ara released a concentrated magical blast that knocked three wolves backward.
Subin moved last.
He didn't rush toward the strongest target.
Instead, he watched the formation.
The wolves weren't attacking randomly.
They were rotating.
Every time one wolf was injured, another moved into its position.
“Yerin.”
“What?”
“Left side. They're changing formation.”
She immediately understood.
“Min-seok, left!”
Min-seok shifted.
The next wolf attempted to move into the gap.
Min-seok's axe caught it.
Subin stepped through the opening and cut twice.
The remaining wolves collapsed shortly afterward.
Ara looked at him.
“You saw that immediately?”
“Their movement had a repeated transition.”
She sighed.
“Right. Of course.”
The first battle had been simple.
The dungeon wasn't.
They continued.
The deeper they went, the more the environment changed.
The white stone gradually became transparent.
Mana crystals grew larger.
The temperature fluctuated every few minutes.
At one point, the entire corridor suddenly became warm.
Five minutes later, it became cold enough that several B-rank Awakeners had to activate protective equipment.
Yerin stopped the group.
“Subin?”
He crouched and placed his hand against the floor.
“The dungeon is changing.”
Jae-hyun frowned.
“Changing how?”
“It's redirecting mana.”
“Toward where?”
Subin looked ahead.
“Forward.”
Jae-hyun immediately gave an order to his guild members.
“Prepare for contact.”
The group advanced.
The corridor opened into a massive chamber.
Hundreds of white crystals hung from the ceiling.
In the center stood a creature resembling a massive white bear.
Frosthide Guardian — Level 89
Rank: A
The creature opened its eyes.
Its roar shook the chamber.
The battle began immediately.
The Frosthide Guardian charged.
Park Seong-hwan stepped forward and blocked the impact.
The force pushed him backward several meters.
“Strong!” he shouted.
Min-seok moved from the side.
His axe struck the creature's shoulder, but the impact only cracked its armor.
Jae-hyun's guild members attacked from the opposite direction.
Ara began casting.
Yerin coordinated everyone.
“Don't surround it! Keep distance!”
Subin watched.
The creature was strong.
But its movements were predictable.
Every time it attacked, the mana beneath its feet moved first.
Subin waited.
The Guardian swung its massive arm toward Min-seok.
Min-seok blocked.
The floor cracked.
Subin moved.
His sword passed through the small gap between two armor plates.
The Guardian roared.
But it didn't fall.
Instead, its mana surged.
The wounds began closing.
Ara shouted, “Regeneration!”
Subin looked at the ground.
There.
The mana beneath the Guardian was connecting with the surrounding crystals.
“Yerin.”
She understood immediately from his tone.
“What?”
“Stop attacking the body.”
Everyone hesitated.
Subin pointed toward the floor.
“The dungeon is healing it.”
Yerin looked at the crystals.
“Then break the connection.”
“Exactly.”
The team changed tactics.
Ara targeted the crystals.
Jae-hyun's guild members destroyed the outer formations.
Min-seok kept the Guardian occupied.
Subin moved around the battlefield, cutting the mana pathways one after another.
The Guardian's regeneration slowed.
Then stopped.
Jae-hyun watched Subin carefully.
“You saw that from the beginning.”
“No.”
Subin's eyes remained on the creature.
“I saw it during the fight.”
Jae-hyun said nothing.
The Guardian attacked again.
Subin stepped forward.
His sword moved once.
A clean cut passed across the creature's chest.
The Frosthide Guardian froze.
Its body collapsed.
The entire battle was over.
A system notification appeared.
[A-rank Frosthide Guardian defeated.]
[Level 89.]
[A-rank Mana Core acquired.]
[Core Purity: 95.7%.]
[Stored Mana: 84,320.]
Subin absorbed the core.
His mana increased slightly.
Mana: 44 → 45
Sword Intent: 97.8% → 98.0%
Environmental Flow Integration: 77% → 79%
Sword God Class Evolution: 88% → 89%
He looked at the notification briefly before closing it.
The increase was modest.
But it was real.
More importantly, the team had learned something.
White Valley wasn't simply producing stronger monsters.
It was adapting the environment around them.
Yerin walked over.
“Are you satisfied?”
Subin nodded.
“We have enough information.”
Min-seok looked at him.
“Already?”
Subin looked deeper into the dungeon.
“Yes.”
Min-seok frowned.
“We've barely gone in.”
“We've confirmed the important things.”
Ara agreed.
“He's right.”
She checked her equipment.
“The mana density is increasing too quickly. Staying longer could change the classification.”
Jae-hyun looked toward the deeper passage.
“We can continue.”
Yerin shook her head.
“No.”
Jae-hyun looked at her.
“We haven't reached the second zone.”
“And we don't need to.”
Yerin pointed toward the mana readings.
“It's already increased by another six percent.”
Everyone became quiet.
Director Kang's warning returned to their minds.
The dungeon was changing.
The objective had been information, not conquest.
Yerin turned toward the team.
“We're leaving.”
Jae-hyun looked dissatisfied but didn't argue.
The expedition turned back.
The return journey was uneventful.
Several smaller monsters appeared, but the team defeated them quickly without allowing the fights to develop into extended battles.
Subin noticed something interesting.
The monsters were already becoming more organized.
That was enough.
By the time they exited White Valley, the dungeon's mana density had increased by almost fourteen percent since their arrival.
The Association researchers immediately surrounded the team.
“How deep did you reach?”
“First major chamber.”
“Monster levels?”
“Seventy to eighty-nine.”
“Any unusual abilities?”
“Environmental regeneration.”
“How rapidly is the dungeon changing?”
Ara handed over her readings.
“Rapidly.”
The researcher stared at the data.
His expression changed.
“This is accelerating.”
Director Kang arrived shortly afterward.
He looked at Subin.
“What did you learn?”
Subin answered simply.
“White Valley isn't a normal A-rank dungeon.”
Director Kang waited.
“The environment is adapting to the people inside it. If we keep sending stronger teams without monitoring the changes, the dungeon may eventually develop monsters beyond its current classification.”
Director Kang nodded slowly.
“How strong?”
“Unknown.”
“That worries you?”
Subin looked back at the white stone entrance.
“No.”
Director Kang smiled slightly.
“Of course it doesn't.”
Subin turned toward the others.
Min-seok was already discussing the battle with Park Seong-hwan, exaggerating how much damage his axe had supposedly dealt.
Ara was arguing with him about the actual numbers.
Yerin stood nearby, speaking with the Association researchers.
Jae-hyun remained apart from the others.
Their eyes met.
Neither looked away.
There was no hostility as open as yesterday.
But the rivalry was becoming clearer.
Jae-hyun eventually walked toward Subin.
“You were right.”
Subin looked at him.
“About what?”
“The dungeon.”
Subin waited.
Jae-hyun continued.
“I wanted to go deeper.”
“I know.”
“But you didn't.”
“No.”
Jae-hyun's expression hardened slightly.
“Don't misunderstand. I still don't like you.”
“I know.”
“And I still think your growth is dangerous.”
“I know.”
Jae-hyun almost smiled.
“You really are irritating.”
Subin shrugged.
Jae-hyun walked away.
Subin watched him leave.
It wasn't friendship.
It wasn't reconciliation.
But it was progress.
Human relationships didn't always change through dramatic battles.
Sometimes they changed through shared danger.
Yerin approached after Jae-hyun left.
“You handled that well.”
“What did I do?”
“Nothing.”
“Then how did I handle it well?”
She smiled.
“Exactly.”
Subin looked at her for a moment.
“You're making fun of me.”
“Maybe.”
He smiled.
It was small, but genuine.
The White Valley expedition had lasted less than six hours.
No legendary treasure had been discovered.
No enormous monster had been defeated.
No new sword technique had been created.
Yet Subin considered it one of the more valuable expeditions he had experienced.
Because today, he hadn't simply become stronger.
He had learned how to fight alongside others.
And he was beginning to understand that reaching the peak of swordsmanship wouldn't mean walking alone.
Sometimes the strongest sword was the one that knew when not to be drawn.
That evening, the Association published its first official report on White Valley.
The dungeon remained classified as A rank.
However, its status was changed to:
Dynamic Evolutionary Dungeon.
Exploration was temporarily restricted.
Subin's contribution was officially recorded.
His personal reward was modest.
He didn't complain.
When he returned home, he placed Simple Edge on the table and opened his status window.

Subin stared at the final line.
Still 99.99%.
He smiled.
He wasn't going to force it.
Outside his window, the city lights stretched into the distance.
Somewhere in that city, other Awakeners were training.
Guilds were making plans.
The Association was monitoring new dungeons.
And people who had once ignored Subin's existence were beginning to wonder how far he would eventually climb.
Subin picked up Simple Edge.
Tomorrow, he would train.
Not because he had an enemy waiting for him.
Not because a dungeon demanded it.
Simply because there was still another step ahead.
And for him, that was enough.
