"Of course it’s true! When have I ever lied to you?" Ning Chenyang said. "You’d better just stay put with me. And tell me what’s happened these past few days while you’re at it."

Since Ning Chenyang said that, Tian Nan didn’t leave. She simply sat down and said, "You got hit by a tree, and when they sent you to the hospital you were covered in blood. You stayed a few days in Linjiang Hospital, then they transferred you to Nancheng. You’ve been in a coma ever since—it’s already been a week. Your comrades came to see you, then all went back."

"How bad was the disaster this time?" Ning Chenyang asked.

"The magnitude wasn’t very high. The experts say it was an aftershock. There were almost no casualties. The spot you were standing at was a bit special—just happened to be right under a big tree that was already on the verge of falling. If there hadn’t been an earthquake it’d be fine, but once it hit, you didn’t run."

"That’s good." Once he heard that everyone was okay, he finally felt relieved.

"Here, have an apple. I’ll peel one for you!" Tian Nan got up to grab an apple and go to the restroom to wash it. As she passed in front of Ning Chenyang, that short skirt flicked up, revealing the white shorts underneath.

Ning Chenyang saw it and immediately turned his head away.

When Tian Nan came back, she picked up the fruit knife from the bedside table and started peeling the apple for Ning Chenyang. Her small hand turned the apple as she worked, and a long, even strip of peel slowly dangled down without breaking.

"Nannan, how come you’re here? Who told you I was hurt?" Ning Chenyang watched her peel the apple, enjoying the sight, as he asked.

"My dad told me." Tian Nan tossed the peel away, then carefully cut the apple into small cubes about a centimeter on each side, still attached to the core. She picked them up with a toothpick and fed them to Ning Chenyang. "Let me give you some news: my whole family has come back. Dad’s been transferred back as division commander, and Mom and I are moving back to Nancheng for good."

When Tian Nan was thirteen, Tian Niu was transferred to another unit to serve as chief of staff at division level, and he was gone for more than three years.

During these years, he racked up impressive achievements, performing well several times in military exercises. With Qin Jian’s support, he also rose step by step through the ranks.

As the years went by, the units stationed in Nancheng also changed.

The original regiment headquarters was abolished and turned into a division headquarters.

And at the old military compound, those veteran leaders all went off to the cadre retirement home, while Qin Jian moved back into the compound where his parents had once lived.

Many old buildings, after years of change, had been torn down and rebuilt.

The only thing that hadn’t changed was the bond they’d formed with Nancheng. No matter how they circled around, they always ended up back in Nancheng. You could call it a rather magical kind of fate.

"That’s great." Ning Chenyang was genuinely happy to hear they were back. "From now on our two families can spend New Year’s together again."

"Great, my foot! You’re stuck in the army and can’t come back anyway!" Tian Nan said softly. "Even though you can be pretty awful sometimes, most of the time you’re... passable."

"What do you mean, ’passable’?" Ning Chenyang squinted his eyes with a smile. "I’m top-notch."

"Big talker!" Tian Nan saw he’d finished the apple and got up to throw away the core.

As she moved, the hem of her clothes fluttered up again, and those white shorts were once more right in front of Ning Chenyang’s eyes.

"Don’t wear that skirt anymore," Ning Chenguang said. "It’s way too short."

"It’s fine, isn’t it?"

"Fine, my ass!" Ning Chenyang wanted to tell her that her shorts were showing, but he felt too embarrassed. After thinking for a second, the only words that came out of his mouth were, "White ones!"
