"But my many years of experience are enough to make my heart old." Luo Tong said, getting up to open her purse, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it, "Sorry, I’m kind of addicted."

"Smoke away, I don’t mind."

"Thanks." Luo Tong took a couple of fierce drags and said, "Ayan, you haven’t experienced despair, you don’t know what despair is. You haven’t been forced into doing what you don’t want to do. You haven’t begged along the streets in the cold wind when there was nowhere else to turn, and you haven’t felt the sensation of almost dying from illness. At that point, it felt like my soul was going to float out of my body, hovering mid-air, truly... you also haven’t experienced the feeling of being slapped in the face and humiliated at will. I’ve been through all of this, which you’ll never experience in your life. Now you understand why my mindset is so old, right?"

"These aren’t signs that you’ve resigned to decline, right?" Chi Yan asked.

"Decline? You call this decline?" Luo Tong chuckled, "I think it’s pretty good. The feeling of having power in your hands is truly great."

Chi Yan looked at this girl who was obviously only twenty years old, yet had a heart as old as forty, and ultimately chose not to persuade her further.

"Get some rest. I’ll go out for a smoke." Luo Tong stood up, ready to leave.

Chi Yan said, "Smoke less, it’s not good for girls."

"I know."

"Stay away from my father, he’ll ruin you. You’re so capable, wherever you go, whichever company you go to, people will fight to have you. Don’t follow him, when he’s gone, don’t rush in, I don’t want you to get caught up in trouble."

"Thank you, Ayan!" Luo Tong gave a charming smile, "I’m not that foolish! And I won’t die easily, I still have unfinished aspirations."

...............

Chi Yan hadn’t been to school for half a month, and the classroom was much quieter without him.

He Yue enjoyed a month of peaceful days.

On the weekend, Qin Jian was returning from the army, and An Hao got the news early and went to the market to buy lots of delicious food.

Her husband worked so hard, she had to make some good food to reward him. The two kids were also tired from their studies lately, so she would use it to supplement their nutrition.

A whole table of dishes was prepared, and Qin Jian just arrived home.

As soon as he pushed open the door, An Hao came out of the kitchen, naturally took his military hat, helped him with the belt, took off the military coat and hung it on the rack. She did all of this so smoothly and naturally.

He Yue watched this scene, feeling a bit of faint loss. "I really envy them!"

Ning Chenguang didn’t understand He Yue’s meaning, smiling as he watched his parents show affection in front of him: "Envious? Actually, I’m quite envious too. My parents have been married for so many years, and I’ve rarely seen them argue! The scene you see here plays out often at home, my mom’s been doing it for years, she’s become incredibly skilled at it."

"If my mom and dad were here, mom would also prepare a pot of tea and pass him a rolled cigarette when dad came back from the fields." He Yue said softly.

Only then did Ning Chenguang realize he misunderstood, "Sorry..."

"It’s okay." He Yue’s eyes reddened a bit, squeezing out a smile as she stepped forward too, "Hello, Uncle Qin!"

"What’s this? Have you been crying?" Qin Jian noticed at once that something was wrong with He Yue.

"Missing Uncle He and Aunt He." Ning Chenguang’s words carried a hint of blame, "Isn’t it you guys’ fault? Showing off your affection as soon as you walk through the door!"

"You brat!" Qin Jian cursed Ning Chenguang under his breath, then turned to He Yueyue and said, "Don’t be sad, Yueyue! I have good news for you!"
