Surviving The Apocalypse With My Boss
Chapter 99: The Mystery of the Egg II
Chapter 99: Chapter 99: The Mystery of the Egg II
Killian rested his hand lightly against the shell once more.
"When will it hatch?"
This time...
Ziki answered without hesitation.
"Soon."
Killian looked up.
"Soon?"
"Yes."
"The awakening has already begun."
"Its development has accelerated significantly."
"If no unexpected circumstances arise..."
"It will hatch in the near future."
Killian’s gaze slowly returned to the egg.
For the first time...
He found himself looking forward to tomorrow.
Not because of another supply run.
Not because of surviving another night.
But because somewhere inside that silent black shell...
His future companion was preparing to enter the world.
The cave gradually fell silent once more.
Only the steady rhythm of crystal water dripping into the spiritual spring remained.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Killian rested his hand against the smooth black shell one final time.
Warm.
Steady.
Alive.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"...Soon."
The word lingered in his thoughts.
For the first time since his rebirth...
He found himself looking forward to something beyond tomorrow’s battle.
Somewhere within that mysterious shell...
His companion was growing.
Not a weapon.
Not a servant.
A companion.
Someone who would one day walk beside him.
The thought was strangely comforting.
He slowly withdrew his hand.
"Let’s go."
"As you wish, Master."
Leaving the cave behind, Killian followed the narrow stone path back toward the mountain entrance.
As daylight poured into view, the familiar landscape stretched before him.
Rolling green fields.
Gentle hills.
The crystal spring winding through the valley.
And beyond...
The endless farmland.
He stopped.
Until now...
He had treated the farmland as little more than scenery.
Something that simply existed.
But after everything that had happened during the night’s supply run...
His perspective had changed.
Food.
Water.
Medicine.
Shelter.
Every survivor needed the same four things.
The shopping malls would eventually be emptied.
Warehouses would be looted.
Distribution centers would become battlefields.
Eventually...
There would be nothing left to scavenge.
His eyes slowly swept across the rich black soil.
"...This could feed people."
Not today.
Not next week.
But eventually.
The space accelerated the passage of time.
What took months outside...
Could be harvested here in mere days.
A quiet realization settled over him.
Perhaps...
His greatest treasure wasn’t the storage function.
It was the land itself.
"Master."
Ziki’s calm voice echoed softly.
"I believe you are arriving at the same conclusion the previous caretakers reached."
Killian turned slightly.
"So they farmed here."
"Yes."
"Every awakened master eventually did."
Killian nodded thoughtfully.
"It would be foolish not to."
He had already purchased seeds before the apocalypse.
At the time, it had seemed like simple preparation.
Now...
It felt like one of the smartest decisions he had made.
He mentally began making plans.
Corn.
Rice.
Potatoes.
Sweet potatoes.
Beans.
Wheat.
Vegetables.
Fruit trees.
Medicinal herbs.
The fields before him were enormous.
Far larger than he had originally estimated.
Properly managed...
This land could sustain countless harvests.
His footsteps resumed.
This time...
Toward the lone cabin resting peacefully beside the fields.
Odd.
He had entered this space many times.
Explored the mountains.
Discovered the cave.
Met Ziki.
Even awakened the mysterious egg.
Yet...
He had never stepped inside the cabin.
It had simply...
Never occurred to him.
Perhaps because it looked so ordinary.
A modest wooden home.
Stone chimney.
Wide front porch.
Weathered cedar walls.
Simple.
Quiet.
Almost...
Inviting.
He climbed the three wooden steps.
The old porch didn’t creak beneath his feet.
Everything remained remarkably well preserved.
As though time itself respected this place.
Killian reached for the brass handle.
It turned effortlessly.
The door swung inward.
Warm cedar greeted him.
The scent was faint...
Yet comforting.
His eyes slowly surveyed the room.
Nothing extravagant.
A stone fireplace.
Bookshelves lining one wall.
A sturdy wooden dining table.
Four matching chairs.
A rocking chair positioned beside the window overlooking the fields.
A modest kitchen.
Everything was neat.
Orderly.
Patient.
As though someone had carefully prepared the cabin...
Then simply never returned.
Killian walked farther inside.
No dust.
No decay.
No signs of abandonment.
Only silence.
His gaze eventually settled upon a large oak desk positioned near the back of the room.
Several objects rested upon it.
A leather-bound journal.
A rolled parchment secured with dark crimson wax.
A neatly folded family tree.
And...
Two sealed envelopes.
His breathing slowed.
One envelope bore elegant handwriting.
Its ink looked impossibly fresh.
To My Son, Killian.
He froze.
"...Father."
For a long moment...
He simply stared.
His father had never spoken about the ring beyond telling him to protect it.
Never mentioned magical spaces.
Never spoke of ancient inheritances.
Yet...
There was a letter.
Waiting here.
For him.
Killian slowly picked it up.
The paper felt surprisingly new.
Almost as though the space itself had preserved it.
He carefully broke the seal.
Inside rested several handwritten pages.
The first line alone made his chest tighten.
My dear son,
If you are reading this...
...then the legends our family protected for countless generations were true.
Killian’s fingers unconsciously tightened around the paper.
His father...
Had known.
Not everything.
But enough.
He continued reading.
I do not know what this sanctuary looks like.
I have never stepped inside it.
Nor did your grandfather.
Or the generations before him.
For centuries, the Remington family has done only one thing.
Protect the ring.
Preserve the bloodline.
And pray that the day would never come when one of our descendants needed what lies beyond its gates.
Killian slowly lowered the page.
His throat tightened.
His father...
Had spent his entire life safeguarding something...
He himself would never inherit.
Not for wealth.
Not for power.
Not for glory.
Simply because he believed...
One day...
His son might need it.
Killian looked toward the quiet fields beyond the window.
"...Thank you."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Then...
His eyes drifted toward the second item upon the desk.
The ancient leather journal.
Unlike his father’s letter...
This one carried no name.
Only a title embossed into the worn cover.
To the One Chosen by the Spiritual Ring.
The leather felt impossibly old beneath his fingertips.
Centuries old.
Perhaps older.
The moment he opened the cover...
The first page greeted him with elegant calligraphy unlike anything he had ever seen.
If these words have reached your eyes then our greatest fear has come to pass.
The sanctuary has awakened.
The blood of Remington yet endures.
And the world beyond these walls has entered its final twilight.
Killian’s heartbeat quickened.
He turned the page.
The first sentence waiting for him there made him stop breathing.
Take heed, child of our blood.
This sanctuary was not built for thy martyrdom as the shield of a broken world
Silence filled the cabin.
His eyes remained fixed upon those words.
As though written directly across centuries...
For him alone.
It was built for one purpose.
So that at least one descendant of our blood would have a chance to survive.
Killian took a deep breath, hands shaking as he read the last words.
Live.
Endure.
Pass our bloodline forward if Heaven grants thee that blessing.
That alone shall fulfill the duty we have carried through the ages.
Those words alone were enough to lift a weight he had never realized he was carrying.
A burden he had placed upon himself.
One no ancestor had ever asked him to bear.
He wasn’t asked to become a savior.
Just a survivor.
That was enough.
