Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Humanity Adapts

The descent to the twelfth floor was quiet.

Not the suffocating silence of death.

Not the tense silence of anticipation.

Just... quiet.

After everything they had witnessed on the upper floors, Penelope found herself hoping that perhaps this floor had been spared.

She knew better.

But hope had become difficult to let go of.

As they stepped onto the twelfth-floor landing, the first thing Penelope noticed was the furniture.

Sofas.

Dining chairs.

Bookshelves.

Every piece had been dragged into the hallway and stacked against the elevator and stairwell entrances. The makeshift barricades weren’t professional, but they were effective. Someone had thought ahead.

Penelope exchanged a glance with Killian.

"They prepared."

Killian nodded.

"They adapted."

Before Penelope could respond, a scream echoed from the far end of the hallway.

Not a scream of terror.

A scream of effort.

"GET AWAY FROM MY MOM!"

A loud crash followed.

Then another.

Without hesitation, Penelope and Killian sprinted toward Apartment 1203.

The front door hung open.

The scene inside was chaos.

A family of six had barricaded themselves inside the apartment.

A middle-aged man was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow while desperately trying to keep an overturned dining table between his family and two zombies. A woman wielded a kitchen chair like a shield. An elderly grandmother clutched two younger children behind the sofa.

And standing in front of all of them was a boy.

He couldn’t have been older than thirteen.

He held a metal baseball bat in both hands.

The zombie lunged.

The boy swung.

The bat connected with the zombie’s shoulder.

The creature stumbled.

Then stood back up.

The boy’s face paled.

He swung again.

And again.

The zombie continued forward.

"Move!" the father shouted.

The boy didn’t move.

Instead, his eyes locked onto the zombie’s face.

Specifically—

Its head.

Something shifted in his expression.

Realization.

The zombie lunged again.

This time, the boy adjusted his grip.

Then he swung with everything he had.

Crack.

The sound echoed throughout the apartment.

The zombie collapsed.

And didn’t move.

The room fell silent.

The boy stared at the corpse.

The father stared at the corpse.

Even Penelope froze.

Slowly, the boy looked up.

"The head," he whispered.

The second zombie screeched and rushed forward.

The boy’s expression hardened.

He stepped into the swing.

Crack.

The zombie collapsed beside the first.

Silence.

Complete silence.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The boy lowered the bat and stared at his trembling hands.

"Was..."

His voice shook.

"Was that right?"

For the first time since entering the apartment, Killian stepped forward.

"Yes."

The boy looked up.

Killian’s expression remained calm.

"The brain controls the body. Destroy it, and the infected die."

The father let out a shaky breath and sank into a chair.

The mother began crying.

Not from fear.

From relief.

"We survived?" she asked quietly.

Penelope stepped forward and nodded.

"You did."

The younger children burst into tears.

The grandmother sat down heavily and covered her face with both hands.

The thirteen-year-old simply stood there, still clutching the bat.

As though he couldn’t quite believe what he had done.

Penelope walked over and crouched in front of him. ℴ

"What’s your name?"

The boy blinked.

"...Ethan."

She smiled.

"Good job, Ethan."

For the first time since they had entered the apartment, Ethan’s composure broke.

His eyes reddened.

He looked away.

"I thought we were going to die."

Penelope looked around the room.

At the couch barricades.

At the make-shift weapons.

At the family who had fought for one another.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

She stood.

"You survived because you refused to give up."

The father looked at Killian.

"This is just the beginning...isn’t?"

Killian didn’t hesitate.

"Yes."

The truth hit the room like a physical blow.

"But," he continued, "you’ve already done the hardest part."

The family stared at him.

"You accepted reality."

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew he was right.

Penelope gave them a few final instructions.

"Gather food."

"Store water."

"Keep your doors barricaded."

"Fear the zombies, but do not underestimate human greed..."

She didn’t finish.

She didn’t have to.

The family understood.

As Penelope and Killian walked toward the door, Ethan suddenly spoke.

"Wait."

They stopped.

"Can people really survive this?"

Penelope turned.

Killian answered.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just certainty.

Ethan nodded.

For some reason, that single word seemed to give him more strength than anything else.

As the apartment door closed behind them, Penelope remained silent for several moments.

Eventually, she looked at Killian.

"You knew someone would figure it out."

Killian kept walking toward the stairwell.

"Eventually."

"You sounded certain."

He reached for the door leading to the eleventh floor.

Then, for the first time that day, a faint smile appeared on his face.

"Humans adapt."

Penelope followed him into the darkness below.

For the first time today, she found herself believing that humanity might actually survive..

***

The reunion happened on the stairwell between the twelfth and eleventh floors.

Kai was the first to spot them.

"There you are."

Penelope looked up as Erik and Kai descended from the 13th floor staircase. Erik had sent the wolf cub back into their shared space. Killian was still unaware of the cub’s existence. His existence could not be revealed until Penelope granted Killian access to the space.

For a brief moment, the four of them simply stared at one another.

Not because they had been apart for long.

But because each group had witnessed a different side of the apocalypse.

"How many?" Erik asked.

Penelope considered the question.

"Two families."

"Four zombies," Killian corrected.

She shot him a look.

"That wasn’t what I meant."

Killian didn’t respond.

Kai rubbed the back of his neck.

"We had more survivors."

His voice lacked its usual humor.

"One family. One woman."

He didn’t elaborate.

He didn’t need to.

Penelope nodded.

"Us too."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Kai forced a grin.

"Well, at least humanity isn’t completely doomed."

"Not yet," Killian replied.

The answer was so immediate that Kai chose not to argue.

Together, the four of them descended to the eleventh floor.

The moment the door opened, growling echoed through the hallway.

Three zombies.

One near the elevator.

Two wandering aimlessly between the apartment doors.

This time, nobody hesitated.

Months of training transformed into instinct.

Erik moved first.

Lightning flashed.

The first zombie collapsed.

Kai’s flames ignited moments later, forcing the second zombie backward.

Before it could recover, Penelope’s earth spikes erupted from beneath its feet.

Killian ended the third before it even had a chance to react.

Silence returned.

The four of them stood still.

Listening.

Waiting.

Nothing.

"No survivors?" Kai asked quietly.

Nobody answered.

Apartment 1101 stood open.

The smell of blood drifted into the hallway.

Erik stepped forward first.

The apartment looked as though a storm had torn through it.

Furniture lay overturned.

Glass covered the floor.

Blood stained the walls.

And kneeling in front of the bathroom door was a woman.

Or what had once been a woman.

She wore a pale pink sweater.

Her dark hair hung limply over her face.

Blood covered her mouth.

Yet she wasn’t attacking.

She wasn’t moving.

She simply remained there.

Waiting.

Hrimnir growled softly.

The zombie turned.

Her white eyes locked onto the group.

She lunged.

The battle lasted less than a second.

Lightning flashed.

The woman collapsed.

Silence.

Then—

A cry.

Soft.

Weak.

Human.

Nobody moved.

The sound came again.

Kai blinked.

"...Was that a baby?"
