Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Cabbage Thief

Killian’s POV

Jeez, this family was acting like I came to abduct their most valued treasure. All I was doing was joining their team.

I mean, I could try to be a one man show but that wouldn’t keep me alive for long.

I am not too sure about the details of her death, I mean everything was hearsay. But I do recall one argument between the two brothers, the younger one blamed the older one and his woman for her death.

Things got heated really fast during that argument. Kai almost killed his brother’s woman when she tried to play peacemaker.

At that time, I wasn’t sure who the deceased sister was, but now I know it’s Penelope. So, Penelope died during a supply runs with her siblings and the woman. However, from what Kai said, the woman pushed Penelope towards the zombie hoard in order to escape. He also accused Erik of plotting her death.

I remember the Erik in my past life, he was a crazy man. His love for that woman was almost like an obsession. Making him do insane things just for her. Including ignoring his brother’s death and causing his mother’s ending as well.

The man before me does strike me as a crazy fool blinded by love. Something is off here. He was extremely protective of his sister. To the point that it was starting to irritate me.

Since I entered this home, this man has been eyeing me as if I am some pig trying to snatch away the cabbage he personally raised. I mean, sure Penelope is a beautiful woman but I am not really interested in being in another relationship anytime soon.

Besides, we’re going to be too busy trying to survive to worry about any romantic entanglements.

"So, about forming this team...Erik and I have been contemplating that perhaps we should relocate elsewhere." Penelope said, as she looked at me. It was clear she was asking me for an opinion.

What could I possibly say? It was an ideal thing to do. We needed to move fast. But not tonight. Tonight, we had a very important date with our fates.

"I see, have you considered the new location?" I asked her. This was a woman who was always ten steps ahead. If she mentioned it, it meant they already had a location in mind.

She cleared her throat and mentioned the new living arrangements. Honestly, her plan was pretty much fool proof. I almost wanted to applaud her for her strategic thinking.

"Sounds good, I’m assuming we will leave at dawn?" I asked. Which was an obvious thing, given how everyone was getting ready to sleep and it wasn’t even 8 in the evening yet.

She nodded and turned to her aunt and brothers.

"Well, it’s getting late. Maybe we should all call it a night?" Penelope said as she gave her brother a pleading look. I could see the worry in her eyes when she glanced at her adopted mother. It appears, I may have over shared some details of her death.

"Penelope, Dear, please show Mr. Remington to his bedroom." Her aunt said.

Penelope turned to look at me and gestured for me to follow. I considered telling Penelope about my space, but I wasn’t sure just how trustworthy any of them were. I could trust Penelope, sure, but given her ending in her past life, could I trust her judgement?

I was beginning to feel the fatigue of the past few days settle in. I was too tired to think, I just figured tomorrow would be a new day. We can take it one day at a time. Why stress over the little things when bigger things were at play.

Third Person’s POV

"Do you think it’s true?" Kai asked with a grim face.

"It can’t be. We would never allow something like that to happen." Erik said.

"My poor baby, she must have been feeling...." Aunt Mary couldn’t bring herself to finish her sentence.

"Don’t worry Mary, that will never happen. We won’t let that happen." Aunt Lucy said, reaching out to hug Aunt Mary.

"Who would be so vicious and push her towards the zombies?" Kai asked again.

"I don’t know, but we won’t allow it to happen" Erik said through gritted teeth.

"Wasn’t it all a dream?" Ben asked. He was pretty sure both Penelope and Mr. Remington said they dreamed of these events. Why was everyone acting like everything was dead set.

"You’re right! None of these events happened. It was all dreams. Which means, we can stop it from becoming a reality." Kai said.

"Yes, we can prevent any of these dreams from coming true" Erik agreed.

"Why do all of you have...grim expressions?" Penelope asked.

Everyone in the room stayed quiet. No one wanted to address the elephant in the room.

"Awkward" Kai said as he leaned into Ben, whispering in his ear. Ben was doing his best not to laugh out loud. Leave it to Kai to state the obvious.

"So, how is everyone feeling?" Penelope said, trying to change the subject.

"honestly, a bit tired." Kai said.

Ben and Aunt Lucy both nodded their heads.

"Well, Kai is right. It’s been a long, tiring day. We should all head out to bed. Try to keep your mind clear when you rest." I said to them. I could see the fatigue on their faces.

I wasn’t feeling so well either. I could feel my body start to burn up. Which was a good sign, this meant my chances of waking a superpower were high.

I just hoped the rest would awaken as well.

"P, you don’t look so well. You should head up." Erik said.

"Bro, why do you only worry about her. I also don’t feel so good." Kai said with a deadpan face.

"I don’t feel well either..." Ben responded. His cheeks were starting to look flush. Penelope knew that both Ben and Kai would be undergoing the awakerner’s fever, like her. She looked towards Erik to see if he was also experiencing the same symptoms.

However, he looked well. A little too well for her comfort.
