Vanya’s POV

"Harold, hurry up, it’s time to go." Vanya said as she called out to her younger cousin. They were heading south to the city. She asked her system to scout what homes were available down south. From the memories that she got from the predecessor of this body, she knew that the south would be relatively safer.

Her system found a condominium property available that could be used. Her system fixed all the necessary paperwork and purchased the property. It was a three bedroom on the 20th floor. They were now on their way there. She needed to get there before this power outage. She couldn’t afford to be reckless.

"Sis, I still can’t believe you won the lottery. It’s too magical. I didn’t know you’d get the money deposited so fast. You just won it and reported and they gave you the payment? How novel." Harold couldn’t help but marvel at Vanya’s luck. She won 50 million playing the lottery.

Vanya changed over night. Previously, she never would have played. She claimed it was just a gambling scam by the government. She would always say, chances of winning the lottery were slim. Harold couldn’t believe that his sister played the lottery, but he was happy that she won on her first try. His sister had been through so much. She deserved to have something positive happen to her for once.

"Yes, well. Luck was on our side." Vanya said. She was busy talking to her system.

’Astrid, is the paperwork complete?"

’Do not fret host, nothing will be flagged as suspicious. That home was unoccupied. No owner, it was available for sale. You are now the legal owner of Condominium 2002 Building 11 in Peach Blossom Compound on W. Sigma Road.’

’Good, find the fastest route to that location. Time is running out. We will move now and then work on collecting supplies.’ Vanya knew that she did not have enough time to collect supplies. Everything would have to wait. The most important thing at the moment was getting to a safe location.

"C’mon Harold, we must be on our way. It’s important that we get there before 5pm."

"Sis, I’m ready. Everything is packed in the car. I was just getting your mother’s pendant. I noticed you left it by the window this morning. Honestly, I’m shocked you took it off. You would guard that pendant like your life depended on it." He said as he took a candy and popped it in his mouth.

’The pendant? Oh right, this belonged to the previous predecessor’s mother’ Vanya thought as she reached for it.

She put the pendant back on around her neck and started heading towards the car. Once Harold sat, he turned and looked back at their previous home. He had a vague feeling he would never be returning here. Good. He hated this shifty neighborhood. His sister always had to cover up when she walked around, the men here acted like they had never seen a beautiful woman.

’Host, make a right on the first intersection, drive 2 miles forward, then the entrance to the intersection will be on your left.’ Astrids voiced chimed in.

She proceeded on following Astrids on going instructions until they arrived in front of many tall buildings. She quickly found building 11, and parked in the garage parking lot. They entered the building and headed towards the elevator. While waiting for the elevator, they saw a woman rushing towards them. Vanya took a protective stance, ready to attack if needed. Once the lady arrived in front of them, she bent over as she took a deep breath. She looked up and noticed that Vanya was staring at her.

"Oh goodness, hahahahaha, I am so sorry for scaring you. I also need to enter the elevator." She stood straighter and reached out to introduce herself. "Hello, my name is Persephone Azar, I live on the 20th floor, how about you two?" She asked.

"Hello, I’m Vanya Dexter and this is my brother Harold Dexter. We also live on the 20th floor" She said as she shook her hand.

"Oh my, are you the new owners to Suite 2002? What a coincidence, I live in Suite 2001. Floors 1-10 has 5 condos. Suite 11-20 has 3 condos and suite 21 and 25 contain two condos and a rooftop." Persephone was quite the chatterbox. Her personality was so cheerful, Vanya couldn’t help but remember her fallen comrade Dean. He was also a sunny young man. Quite the character.

"Do you live alone?" Vanya couldn’t help but ask. If it wasn’t for her resemblance to Dean, she never would have pried.

"Huh? Alone? Oh no, I live with my dad and my sister..." Persephone was caught off guard by this question. She started to think that perhaps she came off too friendly. She hope this beautiful woman did not get the wrong idea. She was strictly dickly. She had no intention of changing her taste.

"Good, it’s good to live with family. This way you are not on your own. The world is dangerous, and even more for beautiful young ladies." Vanya said with a graceful smile. She hoped this young lady would be safe once this zombie apocalypse happened.

Once the elevator arrived, all three went ahead and entered. Harold went ahead and pushed the button with the number ’20’ in bold letters. He was as quiet as a mouse. Persephone kept chatting about the local grocery stores and other ’fun places for nocturnal creatures’.

’Astrid, what does she mean?’ Vanya couldn’t help but ask.

’Host... I am not sure either. Perhaps it’s a term for animals awake at night? Back in the interstellar time, the capital star did have nocturnal bars for the night beast.’

’I wonder what beast they have in this time and world?’ Vanya asked.

’Host, perhaps those beast are the ones called vampires. I saw through my data that aside from Zombies, others believe vampires and werewolves creatures exist as well. Vampires are creatures that feast on human blood. They have a long lifespan. According to the data, vampires can be thousands of years old. Werewolves are much more simpler. Just like the human-beast in the interstellar world. They are humans who can transform into wolves. The only weird thing is that their beast form has it’s own soul.’ Astrid answered confused. He felt this world was strange. He was contemplating whether to send the host to another world once it replenished all it’s energy.

’They have creatures who openly feast on human blood? Are these nocturnal places meant to cater to them? This world is a bit...strange, don’t you think?’ Vanya responded to Astrid.

"Are you a nocturnal creature as well?" Vanya asked Persephone. Otherwise why would she mention those locations.

"But of course, although I don’t go often, I do like hanging out with my friends sometimes. You two should come, we will be hanging out tomorrow night." Persephone said.

Vanya was astonished. She looked at Persephone, trying to find the difference in her. She bore no mark that showed she was a ware-beast. That meant she belonged to the vampire lineage. She didn’t seem like a blood drinker. However, this was a lesson for Vanya. Vampires look exactly like humans.

Finally, they arrived on the 20th floor. As the doors opened, Vanya stood in front of Harold allowing Persephone to walk out first. She stepped out and held Harold’s arm, ready to protect him if this vampire tried anything funny towards him.

"Well, that’s your condo and this one is mine. Come look for me anytime." Persephone said, still not noticing the wariness in Vanya’s eyes.

"Thank you. Harold, let’s go. Say goodbye to the nice lady." Vanya said.

Harold was baffled by Vanya’s way of addressing Persephone but still thanked her and said his goodbye.

Persephone:....Lady? Me?

Once they entered their condo, Vanya made sure to lock the doors tightly. She turned to look at Harold. She felt this newly inherited brother of hers was too naive. She had to do her best to keep him safe. Otherwise he would become someone’s blood bank and wouldn’t even notice.
