Chapter 169: Chapter 169: What Makes Her Safe

The morning light filtered soft and gray through the penthouse windows, the storm having eased into a steady, gentler rain overnight, and Penelope gathered the family in the living room with a lightness in her step that hadn’t been there in weeks.

"The contract’s ready to be formed," she announced, and the words landed exactly as she’d hoped they would — Aunt Mary’s hand flying to her mouth, Erik going still with something like relief crossing his usually composed features, Kai letting out a whoop loud enough to startle Aurora into delighted giggles from where she sat propped against a pillow.

"You’re sure?" Erik asked, already moving closer.

"I’m sure." Penelope glanced toward Aurora, warmth spreading through her chest at the sight of the baby babbling happily, entirely unaware of how much this small, ordinary morning meant to everyone gathered around her. "Whatever was blocking it before has resolved. We can finally do this properly."

Aunt Lucy, who’d come up from her own floor the moment word reached her, settled onto the couch beside Aunt Mary, both women exchanging a look thick with quiet emotion. "About time," she said softly.

Erik crossed to where Aurora sat and lifted her gently into his arms, the same practiced, careful motion that had become so natural to him over the past several weeks that none of them commented on it anymore. Aurora’s small fist immediately curled into the collar of his shirt, content in the particular way she only seemed to be when he held her.

"What do we need," Ben asked, already looking toward Penelope for instruction.

"Her birth certificate," Penelope said. "We have that already, from her apartment. Full legal name and date of birth — that’s most of what the contract requires."

Confirmed, came the quiet voice only she could hear, familiar and steady after weeks of aching silence. With the documentation available, along with a biological sample, the contract can be properly formed. Given her age, a fingerprint will suffice in place of a signature.

"With her fingerprint standing in for a signature," Penelope relayed aloud, for the benefit of everyone in the room. "And we’ll need a small blood sample, same as the rest of us. Just a prick, nothing more."

Kai winced sympathetically. "She’s not going to love that part."

"She won’t have to," Penelope said, something warm and reassuring in her voice now. "I’ve got something for that."

A moment later, a small vial materialized in her palm — clear liquid, faintly luminescent, radiating the same soft warmth she remembered from the healing waters of her own spiritual spring, drawn quietly from her space without any explanation offered beyond what was necessary.

"That’s incredible," Aunt Mary breathed, watching Penelope carefully pour a single drop onto a clean cloth, readying it.

"It’s from the same place I keep everything else," Penelope said, smiling faintly, deflecting the question before it could fully form. "Erik, if you’ll hold her steady."

Erik nodded, adjusting his grip on Aurora so she faced outward, one of his large hands cradling her tiny one gently. "Ready when you are."

Penelope retrieved the small ceremonial needle she’d used for every contract before this one, the golden dip pen and blank scroll materializing beside it, and knelt in front of Erik and Aurora both, her own hands steady despite the significance of the moment.

"This will be quick," she promised, mostly to Aurora, who blinked up at her with wide, curious eyes entirely unaware of what was about to happen.

She pricked the pad of Aurora’s tiny finger gently, and the resulting wail was immediate and sharp, startled more than pained, but Penelope moved fast, pressing the prepared cloth against the small wound the instant a single drop of blood welled free.

Aurora’s cry cut off almost as quickly as it had started, her expression shifting from distress to confused, blinking surprise within seconds, the wound already fully healed beneath the cloth.

"Oh, thank goodness," Aunt Lucy murmured, one hand pressed to her chest.

"See?" Kai said, crouching down to make a face at Aurora, drawing a fresh, delighted giggle out of her almost immediately. "Not so bad."

Penelope carefully guided Aurora’s healed fingertip onto the golden scroll, pressing gently enough to leave a clear, small print against the parchment, the drop of blood already gathered separately settling into the scroll’s design with the same shimmering absorption Penelope remembered from every contract before this one.

For a long moment, the room held its breath collectively, waiting.

Then — warmth. Not visible, not dramatic, just a soft, settling certainty that spread through Penelope’s chest the same way it had every time before, confirmation that the bond had taken hold.

Contract complete, the quiet voice confirmed, unheard by anyone but her. Emma Sofia Reyes, known also as Aurora, is now bound under Host’s protection. Full access granted.

Penelope let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, relief washing through her so completely that her eyes stung with unexpected tears. "It’s done."

Erik’s arms tightened slightly around Aurora, something raw and overwhelmed crossing his usually composed face. "She’s protected now. Really protected."

"Really protected," Penelope confirmed, wiping quickly at her eyes, smiling despite the tears. "Should we show her the space?"

Aunt Mary was already nodding, practically vibrating with excitement. "Yes. Let’s all go together."

They gathered close, Erik still holding Aurora securely, and Penelope focused the familiar pull of the space, drawing all of them through together in one smooth transition — the penthouse dissolving around them, replaced by warm golden light, the distant sound of the crystal spring, the wide, endless fields stretching toward the mountains in the distance.

Aurora’s eyes went wide, her small hands reaching out toward the bright, unfamiliar sky, an awed, delighted sound escaping her that had nothing to do with fear at all.

"She likes it," Kai said, grinning.

"Of course she does," Aunt Lucy said, watching with open wonder. "Look at it. Who wouldn’t?"

They walked together toward the stream, Erik carrying Aurora the entire way, pointing out small things as they passed — the fields, the distant mountains, the gentle current of the crystal spring — narrating everything in a low, steady voice that Aurora seemed utterly captivated by despite understanding none of the words.

There is one additional matter, the voice said quietly, for Penelope alone. A precaution I would recommend, given her age.

What kind of precaution?

Aurora will be capable of entering the space independently, the moment she is old enough to consciously will it — likely sooner than any of you expect, given how quickly awakened abilities have been manifesting throughout the city. However, I would recommend a clause preventing her from exiting independently until she demonstrates the judgment necessary to do so safely. A child capable of entering a farm, a mountain, open water, without any adult awareness, is a child at genuine risk.

Penelope considered that carefully, the practical wisdom of it settling easily alongside the fierce, protective instinct she’d carried for Aurora since the very first night. Can that be set without affecting anything else about her access?

Easily. She will retain full entry privileges and complete safety within the space at all times. She simply will not be able to exit without a contracted adult bringing her out. Once she is old enough to demonstrate reliable judgment, the restriction can be lifted.

Do it, Penelope said, certain. That’s a good precaution.

Understood, Host.

She relayed the clause aloud to the others once they’d found a comfortable spot near the stream to sit, Aurora now settled contentedly in Aunt Mary’s lap, small fingers reaching for a nearby patch of grass with fascinated concentration.

"I’ve set it so she can enter on her own once she’s old enough," Penelope explained, "but she won’t be able to leave without one of us bringing her out. Just until she’s old enough to be trusted with that kind of judgment."

"That’s smart," Erik said immediately, no hesitation at all. "She’s going to want to explore the moment she’s able. Better she can’t wander into the mountains alone before she understands what’s actually out there."

"Agreed," Aunt Mary said. "Better safe."

"So one of us always has to be the one to bring her out," Ben clarified. "But she can come in on her own once she’s old enough?"

"That’s how it works," Penelope confirmed. "It’s not a limitation on her safety. It’s the opposite, really. She’ll always have somewhere completely secure to go, and someone will always be the one responsible for bringing her back."

Kai reached over and gently tickled Aurora’s foot, drawing another bright peal of laughter from her. "Guess that makes all of us her designated door, then."

"I suppose it does," Aunt Mary said, smiling.

They stayed in the space far longer than any of them had originally intended, the golden afternoon light stretching on without any real pressure to return, Aurora passed happily between each of them in turn, delighted by the wide open fields, the warm sun, the crystal-clear water of the stream catching her small, curious attention over and over again.

Penelope watched the whole scene unfold with something settled and whole finally taking root in her chest, weeks of guilt and fear over the unfulfilled promise finally, completely resolved.

"She’s safe now," she said quietly, mostly to herself, though Erik, seated close beside her, caught the words anyway.

"She is," he agreed, watching Aurora reach delighted hands toward a low-hanging branch nearby, entirely fascinated by the simple fact of leaves within her grasp. "We all are, a little more than we were yesterday."

Penelope smiled, watching the whole family settle into the quiet, golden afternoon around her.

For the first time in longer than she could easily remember, nothing about the moment felt fragile at all.
