Chapter 2289: Chapter 1479: The Seal (Part 3)

Manstein sat in the chair for a long time without speaking. He looked at Yang Ping, with a complexity in his gaze, as if re-evaluating someone he thought he already knew. "Professor, are you saying that if we fully activate the repair procedure, the human body might lose its current shape and function?" His voice was calm, but within that calmness lay something heavier than data, a natural tremor humans face when imagination expands into the unknown. "The ultimate conclusion of the unified theory is not ’We can cure all diseases,’ but ’We can change the definition of life.’ If we can achieve this, then we must confront a question: Do we have the right to change the definition of life?"

Yang Ping stood by the window, the sunlight already vanished, the sky outside turned an even shade of gray. The distant horizon blurred, like a watercolor painting soaked in water. "I have no answer. I just feel that before we fully open the door, we should first know what’s behind it. Not a technical door, but the thing sealed behind it. We’ve always been asking how to open it, but no one has ever asked why it was shut."

The office fell silent for a long time. Weber stood at the door, holding a folder, without coming in, just standing there. He heard the last few sentences and then looked at Yang Ping, saying in a concise manner: "So what do we do next? Do we stand here without moving?"

Yang Ping turned around to face the two people. "No, we write a commentary, not published in academic journals, but in public media. The title will be ’The Seal.’ Clearly document our discoveries, and clarify our concerns. Tell everyone we’ve found a key, but that this key might open a door we’re not ready to face. Inform everyone of the significance of the seal and the consequences of unsealing it."

Weber nodded, and Manstein also nodded. Yang Ping looked out the window, rain started to fall, fine raindrops descended from the gray sky, blurring the reflections on the glass. He watched for a while, then withdrew his gaze, returned to his desk, sat down, and wrote in the experiment log: "Stop all accelerated training experiments. For the next three months, only conduct validation repeat experiments. Simultaneously begin drafting the public commentary article."

After finishing, he closed the notebook and returned it to the drawer. Outside the window, the rain grew heavier, branches swayed in the rain, water droplets falling from leaf tips splattered tiny splashes on the window sill. He stood by the window watching the rain for a while, then turned and left the office, walking down the hallway, step by step, neither fast nor slow, heading towards the stairs. He pushed open the stairwell door and went down, one level after another. Upon reaching the first floor, he pushed open the safety door and entered the lobby. Through the glass doors of the lobby, one could see the garden in the rain, trees swaying in the wind and rain, every leaf glistening.

He stood in the lobby for a while, then pushed open the door and went outside. Rain fell on his shoulders, hair, clothes, moving neither fast nor slow across the plaza, rain soaking his coat, yet he did not quicken his pace. Thus, he treaded through the rain, walking into the dim daylight, heading towards the residential building.

Whenever he unlocked a mystery, he was always exceedingly excited, but in this way, he seemed on the verge of touching a larger mystery, yet his heart felt not excitement but fear.

A spine-chilling fear!
