Supreme Hunter of Beautiful Souls
Chapter 646: Inner Moon
Kael spent some time staring at the last two lines, waiting for the First Archive to add anything that would make the situation less absurd.
It did not.
The page continued floating in front of him, perfectly satisfied with stating that the original subject was dead while, at the same time, the current subject possessed exactly the same identity.
After everything they had just done in the Garden of Bones, after hours spent separating person, body, function, record, and continuity, it almost felt like a deliberately irritating response.
Edras moved a little closer to the page.
"Can the same individual remain after death?"
Kael looked sideways at him.
"You picked a great time to start asking philosophical questions."
"It is a technical question."
"That’s even worse."
Sylphie gently took the page by the edges.
The inscription did not react to her touch.
Unlike the Hollow Throne, which tried to interpret every approach as a petition or challenge, Inner Moon seemed completely passive.
There was no order being executed at that moment, no authority expanding territory, and no perceptible threat coming from the document.
Only a record that had just realized something about its sole participant had changed.
"Alteration of the individual," Sylphie murmured. "Not the structure."
Kael nodded.
"That’s what caught its attention now."
Seraphine frowned.
"Why now?"
Kael looked at the inscription the Garden of Bones had received just before its own page closed.
EXAMPLE ACCEPTED FOR PROTOCOL REVIEW.
Maybe it was not a coincidence.
The First Archive had just explicitly accepted that functional continuity could not automatically override changes in a subject.
Edras continued to exist despite no longer matching the function for which he had been created.
If that principle had been incorporated into the review, even provisionally, the Archive might have started detecting problems it previously had not even recognized as problems.
"Because until a few hours ago," Kael said, "maybe the First Archive didn’t consider change enough to create an inconsistency."
Sylphie understood.
"If the record said they were the same person, that was enough."
"Even if the current person disagreed."
The page vibrated.
Seraphine looked at it.
"Was that an answer?"
"Or it didn’t like the comment."
Umbra appeared over Kael’s shoulder.
"You’re teaching an ancient archive to get offended."
"I hope not."
Kael turned the page.
"Original purpose."
Nothing.
He tried again.
"Creation record of Inner Moon."
This time, letters slowly appeared.
ORIGIN: CIRCLE OF RHADEN.
START DATE: TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO YEARS AGO.
ORIGINAL PURPOSE: PRESERVE CONTINUITY OF SELF-PERCEPTION DURING COMPLETE LUNAR METAMORPHOSIS.
Sylphie became serious.
"Werewolves."
Kael looked at her.
"You’re sure?"
"Complete lunar metamorphosis, continuity of self-perception, and a project called Inner Moon? If they aren’t werewolves, someone tried far too hard to make it look like they were."
The page added:
INITIAL SUBJECT: LYSSARA VHAREN.
ORIGINAL CONDITION: IDENTITY FRACTURE BETWEEN STATES.
Kael read it twice.
"Identity fracture."
Sylphie placed the page on the military table Edras no longer used to command anyone.
"Some ancient bloodlines had problems during very deep transformations. I’m not talking about losing control and attacking something. That’s instinct. In rare cases, the transformed form developed enough memories and responses of its own that the individual felt as if two people were alternating inside the same body."
"So they tried to keep the same person on both sides."
"Probably."
Kael stared at the original purpose.
By itself, it did not seem monstrous.
A person who woke after each transformation without recognizing what they had done the night before might genuinely want continuity.
Preserving memory, intention, and self-perception between both states could have been exactly the kind of thing that justified the existence of an Archive project.
"Current administrators," he requested.
The page took a moment.
ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATION: CIRCLE OF RHADEN.
LATER TRANSFER: HOUSE VHAREN.
CURRENT ADMINISTRATION: HEREDITARY.
Kael went still.
"Hereditary."
Seraphine grimaced.
"That never ends well."
"So far, it really hasn’t."
Edras tilted his head.
"A function can be hereditary."
"A person shouldn’t be."
The page vibrated again.
Kael noticed.
"Show the changes to purpose."
This time, the document did not answer immediately.
A long dark line crossed the page before the information appeared.
REVISION 1: STABILIZATION OF SELF-PERCEPTION BETWEEN STATES.
REVISION 2: PRESERVATION OF LYSSARA VHAREN’S IDENTITY.
REVISION 3: CONTINUITY OF IDENTITY THROUGH COMPATIBLE DESCENDANTS.
No one spoke.
Kael kept reading.
"Through descendants."
Sylphie became very still.
Seraphine understood first.
"She died."
Kael looked at the earlier line.
ORIGINAL SUBJECT: DEAD.
Then at:
CURRENT SUBJECT: SAME IDENTITY.
"But the project continued."
The page revealed another piece of information.
COMPLETED TRANSFERS: SIX.
Umbra stopped smiling.
Six.
Not six reconstructed bodies.
Not six simultaneous copies.
Six different people born across generations and classified by the system as the continuity of a woman who had died more than two centuries ago.
Kael felt cold irritation begin to rise through his chest.
"Name of the current body."
The page did not respond.
He tried another wording.
"Civil identity of the current participant."
RECORD NOT AVAILABLE.
"Of course."
Seraphine watched the sheet.
"Maybe the Archive never received the new names."
"Because they didn’t matter to the project," Sylphie said. "If the intent was to preserve Lyssara, each descendant would have been treated only as continuation."
Edras looked at Kael.
"Like my bones."
The comparison hit harder than any other comment.
Kael nodded.
"Possibly."
In the Garden, bones had stopped belonging to individuals because the unit was considered more important.
Here, perhaps entire bodies had gone through the same process.
A child was born, grew up, developed tastes, memories, relationships, and a self-perception of their own.
Then, at some point, the structure recognized enough compatibility and concluded that this was merely a new vessel for an older identity.
"What activates the transfer?" Kael asked.
The page answered:
FIRST COMPLETE LUNAR METAMORPHOSIS AFTER MATURATION.
Sylphie closed her eyes.
"So it doesn’t happen at birth."
"How long does the person live before that?"
"Depends on the bloodline. Some transform completely very early. Others only reach lunar maturity years after physical maturation."
Kael kept staring at the page.
"So there is a person before the transfer."
"Yes."
"And afterward the project calls her Lyssara."
"Yes."
The page reacted.
CORRECTION:
IDENTITY REMAINS LYSSARA VHAREN.
Kael stared at the word.
"Correction."
Umbra leaned in to read.
"It disagrees with you."
Kael brought his face closer to the page.
"Great."
Sylphie grabbed his shoulder.
"Don’t argue with paper."
"It worked before."
"Unfortunately."
Kael was still about to answer when the communication crystal lit up.
Amelia appeared on the other side without him needing to call her.
Behind her, Irelia had already returned to occupying a desk that should not have existed in enough quantity for all the crises of that day.
"We received the alteration," Amelia said. "Elion is cross-referencing the name Vharen."
"A werewolf house."
Irelia raised her eyes.
"We know."
"Fast."
"Old families leave trails when they insist on owning land for two hundred years."
She pulled over three documents.
"House Vharen still exists. Technically."
"That sounds like a warning."
"Because it is. The family disappeared from politics eighty-six years ago. They did not lose their lands, were not exterminated, and were never formally dissolved. They simply stopped holding offices and reduced outside contact."
"Location?"
"Ancestral estate in northern Rhaden."
Kael picked up the page.
"It says location not recorded."
"Because the project does not record the subject’s location. The family does."
Amelia placed another document in front of the crystal.
"There’s more. We found six women from the main bloodline born at intervals compatible with the transfers."
Kael went silent.
Irelia began presenting the records.
Not as a complete genealogy, but as a sequence that became more uncomfortable with each name.
Lyssara Vharen had died two hundred and eleven years ago.
Eighteen years later, her granddaughter disappeared from public records for almost a year and returned to the family estate with behavior described by relatives as "restored."
Forty years later, another descendant went through the same pattern.
Then another.
And another.
"None of them lived simultaneously with the next transfer," Irelia explained. "The identity only passed on after the previous body died."
"So someone waited."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"We don’t know."
Seraphine approached the crystal.
"And the current one?"
Irelia pulled out a much more recent sheet.
"Name: Nerya Vharen. Twenty-six years old. Only daughter of the main bloodline."
Kael studied the portrait attached to the document.
A young woman with dark hair, pale eyes, and an expression that looked deeply annoyed by the obligation to remain still for an artist.
"When did the first complete metamorphosis happen?"
Irelia went silent.
Kael noticed.
"It didn’t?"
"It happened nine months ago."
Everyone looked at the page.
ALTERATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL DETECTED.
"Then why did it only detect it now?" Seraphine asked.
Elion appeared in the communication, holding several instruments.
"Because the alteration did not begin now."
"Explain."
"I’m comparing the review records. For nine months, the project classified divergences as deterioration of preservation. After the First Archive accepted Edras’s example..."
He pointed at the page.
"...the same divergence became classifiable as change in the subject."
Kael went still.
The problem had not appeared at that moment.
The First Archive had simply learned how to see it.
"How much has Nerya diverged?"
Elion looked at his instruments.
"Substantially."
The page opened by itself.
PRESERVED IDENTITY: LYSSARA VHAREN.
CURRENT SELF-PERCEPTION: INCOMPATIBLE.
Kael felt his stomach tighten.
Another line appeared.
HISTORICAL MEMORIES: REJECTED.
Then:
BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS: REJECTED.
And finally:
INNER NAME: REJECTED.
Seraphine whispered:
"She’s resisting."
The page responded:
CORRECTION SCHEDULED.
Kael went completely still.
Sylphie already knew what the next question would be.
"When?"
The answer appeared.
NEXT COMPLETE LUNAR CYCLE.
ESTIMATED TIME:
FOURTEEN HOURS.
The humor vanished from the room.
Kael grabbed the crystal.
"Amelia, I want everything on the Vharen estate. Entrances, residents, guards, any recent activity. Irelia, look for Nerya’s movements outside the lands. Doctors, purchases, letters, anything that suggests she tried to ask for help."
"We already started," Irelia replied.
Sylphie grabbed Kael’s arm before he could say anything else.
"You’re going to rest on the way."
"I..."
"You are."
Kael looked at her.
She was not negotiating.
"Fine."
"For real."
"For real."
Umbra appeared beside the crystal.
"I can check the estate’s shadows once we get close."
Kael nodded.
"No entering until we know whether Nerya wants us to."
The page vibrated.
Everyone looked.
An inscription appeared without anyone asking a question.
INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGE RECEIVED.
Kael felt his breath stop for a moment.
The First Archive had authorized individual challenges during the review.
Now someone was using that permission.
A sentence began to appear slowly, letter by letter, with uneven pressure, as though it was not coming from the system but forcing its way through it against resistance.
I AM NOT LYSSARA.
Below it, after several seconds:
MY NAME IS NERYA.
Kael tightened his fingers around the page.
There was no longer any doubt about what they were supposed to preserve.
It was not the identity that had survived through six bodies.
It was the woman who had finally managed to say she did not want to be the seventh.
