Superior Physician
Chapter 185 - 184: Great Physician Jingcheng
Chapter 185: Chapter 184: Great Physician Jingcheng
On Thursday morning, Yu Zhiming drove to the hospital around his usual time, just as he always did.
He parked his car in the underground garage of the general administration building and walked briskly toward the stairwell exit.
"Dr. Yu..."
Yu Zhiming stopped and turned to look at the man who had called out to him and was now jogging in his direction.
He was a man of average height with short, salt-and-pepper hair, and his face was unfamiliar.
The man with the salt-and-pepper hair came up to Yu Zhiming and introduced himself with a smile.
"Dr. Yu, good morning. I’m Doctor Su Yuanhai from the Respiratory Medicine department."
’Su Yuanhai?!’
The name sounded vaguely familiar to Yu Zhiming. He thought for a moment, and then it hit him.
’Damn, isn’t that the doctor who misdiagnosed pneumonia and a mediastinal tumor as lung cancer a while back!’
He immediately recalled the latest list of new Chief Physicians announced by the hospital last Friday.
’Su Yuanhai’s name wasn’t on that list, was it.’
’He’s not here to settle a score, is he?’
At that thought, Yu Zhiming took an imperceptible step back, but he put on a smile and said cautiously, "Doctor Su, hello. I’m truly sorry."
"About that incident... I was new and didn’t know the rules. I wasn’t thinking things through. I really didn’t mean to ruin your chances."
Su Yuanhai waved his hand and said with a light chuckle, "Dr. Yu, there’s no need to apologize."
"That misdiagnosis was mainly my fault. I wasn’t careful enough. In fact, I should be thanking you, Dr. Yu."
Su Yuanhai looked thoroughly shaken as he said, "I heard about what happened with that patient afterward."
"He had given up completely and was chain-smoking nonstop."
"If you hadn’t found and pointed out the misdiagnosis in time, and if he had done something else foolish in the heat of the moment that night..."
"I might have had to bear significant responsibility."
Seeing Su Yuanhai’s sincere expression, Yu Zhiming could tell he wasn’t just feeding him a line. He breathed an inward sigh of relief.
He said apologetically, "But in the end, you were still passed over for the promotion to Chief Physician this time."
Su Yuanhai sighed.
He said, somewhat dejectedly, "Dr. Yu, to be honest, even if the misdiagnosis hadn’t happened, I didn’t have much hope. It was mostly just wishful thinking."
"The competition at Huashan Hospital is just too fierce."
"Looking at the resumes and achievements of the doctors who were promoted to Chief Physician this time, I have to admit there’s a real gap between them and me."
"I have no complaints about being passed over."
After a pause, Su Yuanhai let out a breath, as if a weight had been lifted. "So, I’ve already submitted my resignation to the hospital. I’ll be leaving in a month or two."
"Resigning? Leaving?" Yu Zhiming was a bit confused.
Su Yuanhai grunted in affirmation and explained, "Leaving is a common choice for many doctors in my situation."
"While I’m still relatively young and energetic, and still have some drive, I’ll go somewhere with less competition and try to make Chief Physician there."
"Oh," Yu Zhiming said with a dawning understanding. He then asked, "Doctor Su, have you already found another hospital?"
Su Yuanhai smiled. "I have Director Qi to thank for that. With his recommendation, I got in touch with a pretty good hospital. The benefits are great, too."
’Teacher Qi got involved in this too?’
With some questions still on his mind, Yu Zhiming chatted with Su Yuanhai for a few more moments. They walked out of the underground garage together, then waved goodbye and went their separate ways.
When he arrived at the main office of the Qi Yue Medical Research Center, Qiao Lei eagerly trotted over.
"Dr. Yu, today’s VIP check-up is for a family of seven. It’s scheduled for two-thirty this afternoon."
Yu Zhiming said, "Oh," to show he understood.
Qiao Lei made a money-counting gesture with his fingers and lowered his voice. "Dr. Yu, that big-shot singer offered to pay extra?"
"How much extra?" Yu Zhiming asked casually.
"Five thousand!"
Yu Zhiming rolled his eyes and said sarcastically, "Wow, how generous of her."
"I’m not an unreasonable person. Considering her special circumstances, it’s true that she shouldn’t be making public appearances."
"How about this, Qiao Lei. You tell them..."
"If she makes a donation of, say, tens or hundreds of thousands in her name to a charitable foundation, a university, an orphanage, or some similar institution, I’ll give her a check-up in the middle of the night."
He added, "A free check-up!"
Qiao Lei chuckled. "They’ll definitely agree to that suggestion. They can even use it as a publicity stunt."
Yu Zhiming put on his white coat, clipped on his ID badge, and clocked in on the tablet.
Then, he knocked on the door of the director’s office and went in.
Qi Yue had also just arrived and was on his computer, reviewing the previous night’s ward round records from the on-duty medical staff.
"Teacher, I ran into Doctor Su Yuanhai in the parking garage and we talked for a bit."
Seeing that Teacher Qi had no particular reaction, Yu Zhiming continued, "Doctor Su said he submitted his resignation, and that you were the one who recommended him to the new hospital he’s lined up."
Qi Yue glanced up at Yu Zhiming. "Every year at Huashan Hospital, a few of the associate chief physicians who fail to get promoted to Chief Physician end up leaving."
"Don’t underestimate them. Even if they can’t make Chief Physician at Huashan, they’re still a hot commodity. They have no trouble finding other positions."
"It just so happened that a good hospital asked me to keep an eye out for a few internal medicine doctors, so I recommended him."
"Oh," Yu Zhiming said. "I thought you might have specially recommended Doctor Su to smooth things over between us."
Qi Yue smiled faintly. "Zhiming, you’re not entirely wrong to think that."
"He wasn’t the only suitable candidate."
"My reason for recommending him did indeed include the consideration you mentioned."
Yu Zhiming gave a wry smile and played along. "Well then, thank you, Teacher, for going to such lengths to cover for my mistakes."
He quickly changed the subject. "Teacher, what about the patient Qin Yuan’s chest pain?"
Qi Yue explained softly, "Yesterday evening, I gathered Doctor Xie and a few others to discuss it."
"We believe that a few of the visceral injuries you identified could potentially be causing the patient’s persistent chest pain."
"However, we still need some concrete evidence to support this."
"This morning, they’ll start by taking the patient for some targeted examinations and lab tests."
"We also need you to perform a further full-body examination on him."
Qi Yue then reminded him, "Since the persistent chest pain isn’t related to the heart, it must come down to one of three things: nerves, blood vessels, or a tumor."
"Zhiming, you are particularly skilled at examining blood vessels and tumors, so the possibility of an oversight or omission is very small."
"When you examine him again, pay more attention to the nervous system, especially the brain and spinal cord."
Yu Zhiming nodded in acceptance of the guidance.
He left the director’s office and went to the inpatient area first to check on Luo Qing’s recovery.
As soon as he entered the room, Luo Ying came up to him, her face alight with excitement. "Dr. Yu, Qingqing said she can see points of light!"
"She said they’re flickering, one after another, and they’re colorful!"
"Dr. Yu, do you think this means she’s perceiving light?"
Yu Zhiming looked at Luo Qing, who was sitting up in her hospital bed. He saw her "looking" at him with an expression of nervousness and anticipation.
Yu Zhiming said frankly, "Luo Qing, recovery isn’t that fast. What you’re describing as flickering points of light are likely just hallucinations."
"This type of hallucination is very common among blind people who have just started treatment. They’re just so eager to see again."
He saw the look of anticipation on Luo Qing’s face dissolve into deep disappointment, and he added comfortingly, "Luo Qing, this is a long recovery process."
"Don’t be anxious, and don’t lose heart."
Luo Qing composed herself, a faint smile returning to her face. "Dr. Yu, I’ll cooperate fully with the treatment and focus on recovering patiently."
Yu Zhiming gave Luo Qing an examination.
Before leaving, he told the aunt and niece that as long as there were no unexpected changes like inflammation by the next day, she could have one more MRI and then be discharged to recover at home.
Yu Zhiming took the stairs down to the second-floor office area and saw Ge Yunlun from Capital City stepping out of the elevator.
A few people were following him, two of whom were carrying a large frame.
Inside the frame was a piece of calligraphy with powerful, elegant strokes.
Yu Zhiming instantly recognized the large characters of the calligraphy piece: "Great Physician, Sincere and Dedicated; Profound Virtue, Utmost Kindness."
