Chapter 720: For Someone Who Doesn't Love You, Everything You Say Is Wrong

Xu Yun hadn’t expected to run into them in the cafeteria.

Logically, shouldn’t the university have invited bigwigs like them to dine at a high-end hotel after the event?

The scene was a little awkward.

Fortunately, none of the bigwigs in the group recognized him—except for the man leading the way.

And Ou Jingya, who was behind them.

However, in a situation like this, she didn’t speak up right away, nor would it have been appropriate for her to do so.

Just as Xu Yun steeled himself, pretending not to see them and preparing to walk past like a stranger, the man broke the unspoken rules.

“You came all this way yourself, yet you still had to find a representative?”

The city leader laughed and teased, “You kid, did you time your arrival today just to freeload a meal from your alma mater?”

Seeing this, the crowd sized up the young man before them with curiosity.

After all, anyone who could make the city leader stop in his tracks and greet them so casually wasn’t an ordinary person.

“Sir, I don’t like it when you say that.”

Xu Yun retorted, “Every meal I’ve had at my alma mater, I’ve paid for with a card. And even if it wasn’t my card, it was my teacher’s. I’m not freeloading.”

“It would’ve been fine if you were freeloading. After all, you’ve already bled quite a bit of cash.”

Xu Yun: “…”

“Why don’t you join us for lunch today?”

the city leader invited. “Besides, I have something I want to talk to you about.”

“Too many people. I won’t get to eat my fill. Let’s forget it.”

Xu Yun looked at the large crowd and refused outright. “Besides, I have to eat with my teacher.”

“Sir, if there’s nothing else, my teacher and I are going to get lunch.”

With that, he quickly grabbed his teacher and made his escape.

Wu Jinyan gave her own superiors an awkward smile and a nod. She offered a quick explanation for Xu Yun—that it was just his personality—before following him.

Seeing this, Ou Jingya hesitated for a few seconds before making her excuses to the university leaders as well. She said she couldn’t make it, as something had just come up that she needed to discuss with her mother.

Then she, too, hurried after them.

The group of officials was left a bit dumbfounded.

‘How could these two young people be so clueless about social etiquette?’

‘A gathering of bigwigs like this is a golden opportunity to network.’

‘Especially that young man! To think he just flat-out refused the city leader’s invitation!’

After the group arrived at the dining hall and sat down, a university leader couldn’t help but ask, “Sir, who was that young man? From your tone, it sounded like he’s one of our alumni?”

“Hahaha, all of you really missed out today. You let a major benefactor slip through your fingers.”

The city leader explained, “That young man’s name is Xu Yun. He’s the one who just donated 1.5 billion to your university.”

The university leader: “!!!”

The other entrepreneurs: “…”

The city leader chuckled. “Don’t let his age fool you; he’s no simple character. If any of your companies are short on cash in the future, you could certainly ask him for a bit of help.”

Although they all held different stations in society, they were all alumni. Thus, the city leader was speaking more casually than he normally would.

After a few seconds, the university leader recovered and said awkwardly, “Perhaps… I should go invite him over now?”

“Don’t bother. You’ll only be snubbed.”

The city leader chuckled. “I couldn’t even get him to come. What makes you think you can?”

The university leader: “…”

“The kid is quite low-key. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have sent a representative in the first place.”

The city leader said, “Don’t go making things awkward for him. Let’s just eat by ourselves.”

“Very well.”

The university leader nodded and said with a smile, “But when a private opportunity arises, I must find him and thank him in person for his contribution to our alma mater.”

「Meanwhile.」

Xu Yun, Wu Jinyan, and Ou Jingya were sitting together.

Ou Jingya looked at Xu Yun in surprise. “You were here the whole time, so why did you make me go on stage for you?” she asked, bewildered.

“I only just got here.”

Xu Yun smiled. “Besides, as my teacher knows, I have terrible stage fright. I get nervous the moment I step on stage. It was better for you to go in my place.”

“I was watching, you know. Your performance was incredible. You stunned everyone there.”

“You think that was because of my performance?”

Ou Jingya laughed. “That’s because the number—1.5 billion—is just too terrifying! Anyone would have gotten the same reaction.”

“Well, I still think you were radiant on stage today, absolutely captivating.”

Xu Yun turned to Wu Jinyan. “Right, Teacher?”

“Enough with the flattery.”

Wu Jinyan asked with a serious expression, “You know the city leader?”

“Nope!”

“Oh, cut it out,”

Ou Jingya jumped in with a laugh, calling his bluff. “The city leader definitely knows you, and you two must have a good relationship. Otherwise, there’s no way he would have initiated a conversation.”

“That just goes to show what an approachable and good leader he is.”

Xu Yun retorted, “In principle, he’s subject to our supervision, after all.”

Ou Jingya: “…”

Seeing Xu Yun being completely flippant and spouting nonsense, Wu Jinyan said, “I’m trying to be serious with you.”

“Alright, the serious answer is…”

Xu Yun explained, “We met once before. I helped the local government with a small matter, so I guess that’s why he’s a bit more enthusiastic toward me.”

“What kind of matter?” Ou Jingya asked curiously.

“What else could it be besides money?”

Xu Yun sighed. “I had one cup of his tea that day, and next thing I knew, I was out two billion for a government charity project.”

The mother and daughter were both speechless.

‘How were they supposed to continue this conversation?’

‘Every time he opened his mouth, the numbers started in the billions!’

‘Lately, it felt like Xu Yun’s smallest unit of currency wasn’t dollars and cents, but billions!’
