Strands from a Grate
Weaving twenty kilometers of cable meant producing an absolutely obscene length of individual strand material, and Arista quickly realized that hand-forging each thin length was simply not a realistic option, not at this scale.
"...I need a way to produce strands continuously," she said, staring at the problem from every angle. "Not one at a time, hand-drawn. Something that just... keeps producing consistent, identical strand material, for as long as I keep feeding it raw ore."
She caught herself before getting too far into the design, one detail nagging at her first. "...Actually. Thoth. Quick question before I build anything." She pulled up her tablet. "How much total strand material do I actually need? Not cable length. Strand length. Every individual mithril and adamantium thread, accounting for the twist."
Thoth's dish rotated toward her, processing briefly. "[SYSTEM ANALYSIS] Approximately two thousand, eight hundred and forty kilometers."
Arista blinked. "...How many kilometers?"
"Approximately 2,840," Thoth repeated, entirely unbothered by the number itself. "Helical twist geometry adds length per individual strand relative to overall cable length, and the specified strand-count-per-cross-section multiplies that further across the full braid."
"...Oh." Arista sat with that for a long moment.
Bram, listening nearby, raised an eyebrow. "Still want to make some cable?"
"I am not Mother of Industry for no reason," Arista said, already reaching for her notebook. "Obviously."
She thought about adamantium's actual properties properly, incredibly strong once solid, but like any metal, it had a melting point. If she could melt it reliably, she didn't need to forge each strand by hand at all.
"...A continuous casting furnace," she murmured, the shape of the idea assembling itself. "Melt the adamantium properly, let it flow continuously down a sloped channel, not too steep, controlled flow rate, enough gravity to keep it moving without rushing so fast it loses shape."
At the bottom of the slope, she sketched a grate, a wide metal plate fitted with dozens of small, perfectly identical holes, sized precisely to the final strand diameter Thoth's calculations required, a row of water nozzles positioned directly behind it to quench each strand the instant it emerged.
"The molten metal passes through the grate," she explained, laying the sketch out on the table in front of Claire and Petrov, "comes out already at the right diameter, gets quenched immediately behind the hole so it holds its shape. Continuous, consistent, done in one pass."
Claire studied the sketch for a long moment, something faintly uncertain crossing her expression. "...I don't love this," she admitted, "but I'm not entirely sure why."
She glanced toward Petrov. "...Get Marek?"
Petrov was already reaching for his tablet. "Already composing it."
Marek arrived the following afternoon, unhurried, a rolled set of his own reference notes tucked under one arm, and studied Arista's sketch for a solid minute before saying anything at all.
"...This won't work," he said finally, entirely matter-of-fact, no particular unkindness in it. "Not the way you've drawn it."
"...Okay. Why not."
"Because you're asking molten metal to become finished wire in a single step, and metal doesn't behave that way once it solidifies fast." He tapped the grate. "Cast straight to final diameter, quench immediately, and you lock in whatever rough, disordered grain structure the metal happened to freeze into. No refinement, no working. It'll be brittle. It might even hold its shape fine sitting still and still fail the first time you actually flex it around a wheel."

Arista frowned at the sketch. "...So what am I actually missing?"
"Drawing," Marek said, already sketching his own correction beside hers. "Cast it thick first, rough starter rod, nowhere near final size. Then pull it down through a series of progressively smaller dies. Each pass through a die doesn't just shrink the diameter, it works the metal, refines the internal structure as it goes. By the time it reaches final diameter, it's not just thinner. It's mechanically a completely different material than what you started with. Stronger, more flexible, considerably less likely to snap the first time it sees real tension."
Bram, listening nearby, glanced at the sequence of shrinking circles in Marek's sketch. "...So the shape changes, but so does the metal itself, along the way."
"Precisely that." Marek studied his own diagram a moment longer, then tapped the water nozzles Arista had originally placed right behind the casting grate. "And this needs to move. Quenching mid-draw locks in exactly the rough structure the drawing process is supposed to remove. Cool it after the final pass, once it's actually finished being shaped, not before."
Claire looked over the corrected sketch, quietly satisfied. "...I knew something was off. I just didn't have the actual mechanism for it."
"That's rather why there's more than two of us involved in this project," Marek said, entirely dry, already rolling his sketch up. "You handle the parts that are actually yours. I handle the parts that are actually mine."
Arista studied the corrected design, genuinely delighted despite the correction. "...Okay. Not the final strand diameter all at once. We cast it thick. Then pull it down in stages." She tapped a row of progressively smaller openings, redrawing the mechanism properly. "Rod goes through this one, comes out thinner. Feeds straight into the next one, thinner again. By the time it clears the sixth plate, it's proper strand diameter, and the actual drawing process has refined the grain structure along the way."
"...You built a wire mill," Claire said, studying the revised sketch.
"I built a grate."
"You built six increasingly smaller grates in sequence."
"...An ambitious grate."
"Exactly. No hand-forging required, no manual strand-by-strand production. Just steady, continuous output, as fast as the furnace can melt fresh material and the grate can shape it."
They built the prototype over the following days, a modest furnace, angled casting channel, the precision-drilled starter grate, six progressively smaller drawing plates in sequence, and a row of fine water nozzles positioned after the final draw, exactly where each finished strand would emerge. The first test run produced a length of adamantium strand, thin, consistent, and solid within seconds of clearing the last plate.
"...It works," Claire said, examining the finished strand's diameter against the required specification. "Perfectly consistent, too. Every strand coming out identical to the last."
"Same principle for the mithril side," Arista said, already sketching a matching furnace setup, this one calibrated for mithril's different melting point and flow characteristics. "Two separate continuous casting lines: one adamantium, one mithril, both producing consistent strand material at whatever rate we actually need."
Bram, watching the glowing, freshly quenched strands coil into collection spools, whistled low. "...You just built a factory. An actual, continuous production factory. For cable strands."
"I built exactly what the project needed," Arista said, grinning, already calculating how many hours of continuous operation it would take to produce the full 2,840 kilometers of finished strand material. "Once we've got enough length spooled from both lines, Thoth's weaving ratio tells us exactly how to braid them together, sixty-two percent adamantium, thirty-eight percent mithril, twelve-degree twist."
Claire studied the two furnaces running steadily side by side, strand after strand emerging consistent and solid, coiling neatly onto their respective spools.
"...This is going to take a while regardless," she said. "Twenty-eight hundred kilometers is still twenty-eight hundred kilometers."
"It is," Arista agreed. "But it's steady, reliable production instead of anyone hand-forging anything at exhausting scale. Same lesson as everything else on this project. Build the machine that does the tedious part properly, once, and let it just... keep working."
She watched the strands continue their steady, glowing procession from furnace to grate to water-quench to spool, feeling the familiar, patient satisfaction of a genuinely elegant solution settling into place.
"...Okay," she said. "Let's go make some cable."
