Clearing the Frames
Marek caught the problem first, reviewing the finished tunnel schematics with the same careful, exacting eye he gave everything.
"...Wait. The guide frames." He tapped the sketch, tracing the hexagonal supports spaced every few meters along the tunnel's length. "Each one holds the cable in a fixed guide loop, to stop resonance. But if the cart's attachment arm is permanently fixed to that same cable, it's going to slam straight into your guide hardware every single time it passes a frame."
"...The arm's rigid," Arista said slowly, the problem landing with immediate, uncomfortable clarity. "It doesn't fold, doesn't retract. If the guide loop fully encircles the cable, there's nowhere for that connection point to go." She stared at the sketch. "Every few meters, for ten kilometers. That's not a minor issue. That's the whole system jamming constantly."
Marek studied the hanging-cart design a while longer, something visibly forming behind his expression before he finally spoke again.
"...If you don't mind, I have an idea. A different one, not a patch on this one."
Arista set her stylus down properly. "I'm listening."
"Don't hang the cart from the cable at all. Put it on rails instead, wheels bearing the actual weight, the same way a mine cart works. The cable stays mounted to the side, purely for pulling, not holding anything up." He sketched the cross-section quickly, a simple cart sitting on a pair of narrow rails, a rigid arm extending horizontally from its left side to grip the moving cable. "The rails carry the weight straight through your existing frames without ever needing to interact with them. The cable's only job becomes pulling, which is the one thing it was always meant to do in the first place."
Arista stared at the sketch, the sheer scale of what he was actually proposing landing properly. "...That's not a fix. That's a completely different cart."
"It is," Marek agreed, entirely unapologetic about it. "Because the original design was solving a problem that doesn't need to exist. You built this like a ski lift, cable holds everything, cart hangs beneath it, and then had to engineer an increasingly complicated way for that hanging cart to somehow clear an obstacle it was permanently attached to. Put the cart on rails instead, and the whole problem disappears. There's nothing left to clear."
"...I've been treating this like a chairlift because that's the only reference I had in my head," Arista admitted slowly, already seeing it. "Cable holds everything, because that's how real ski lifts work, crossing open air with nothing solid underneath. But there's no open air down here. There's a solid tunnel floor the entire ten kilometers."
"Exactly. Use it." Marek tapped the simplified cross-section. "Rigid arm on the cart, gripping the cable from the side. At each frame, two guide arms hang down from the top, one for the outbound line, one for the return, each ending in a loop closed on three sides, cradling the cable properly, dampening resonance exactly the way you wanted. But leave the fourth side open, facing the rail. The cart's arm slides straight through that gap as it passes. It never touches the frame at all."

Bram, examining the completely revised design, nodded slowly. "...So the cart isn't even sharing space with the frame anymore. It's not clearing an obstacle. There's just nothing there to clear."
"Precisely that," Marek said. "The frame supports the cable. The rail supports the cart. The two systems only ever meet at that one, narrow, purpose-built gap."
Arista sat with the redesign a long moment, genuinely delighted despite the sheer scope of what had just changed. "...I overcomplicated this considerably, didn't I."
"You designed for the wrong environment," Marek said, dry. "Ski lifts are the only real-world reference for continuous-loop transport, and ski lifts hang because they have to. You just needed someone to point out that down here, they don't."
"Conical wheels handle the actual curves," Arista added, already sketching the full mechanical picture into place. "Same profile as the main railway, nothing new to invent there. Rails themselves can run considerably narrower than the metro line, too, just wide enough for a modified mining cart, room for two people sitting side by side and not much more."
Claire, reviewing the finished schematic afterward, nodded slowly in approval. "...This is considerably more robust as well. Wheels on rails is proven, low-maintenance technology. A cable hanging the entire cart's weight over ten kilometers was always going to be one more thing that could eventually fail."
"Good catch," Arista said, rolling up the completely redrawn schematic, one entire cart design scrapped and rebuilt before a single frame had actually been installed. "I mean that properly. You didn't just patch my idea. You replaced it with a better one."
Marek shrugged, entirely unbothered by the compliment. "That's rather why there's more than one of us working on this."
Bram glanced at Marek, then at Arista, clearly waiting for the chance, ever since Petrov had described exactly how their first meeting had gone.
"You named a golem Garry, a dragon Thoth, a Demon Lord Beelz, and a squid Squishy."
Arista narrowed her eyes.
"...Where are you going with this?"
"I'm just wondering how it feels to finally be on the receiving end."
"...Bram."
He grinned.
"Pinky."
"Please, not you too, Bram."
"Fine, fine."
He let the topic go, at least for now, turning his attention back to the finished schematic properly. "Speaking of finished, though, we've got the cart, the frame, the whole drive mechanism sorted. What's actually powering the wheels?"
Arista paused, the question landing with mild, immediate embarrassment. "...Huh. Good question."
"...Power source," Claire said, reviewing the finished cable and frame designs. "We haven't actually settled that yet. The wheels need something driving them continuously, and we don't have access to the Demon Realm's lava the way the metro did. This entrance sits on the continent's own shoreline."
Arista considered it for a moment, then found herself, refreshingly, not reaching for anything new at all.
"...We don't need to invent anything," she said. "Charcoal briquettes, same hybrid steam system as the zeppelin. Proven, reliable, doesn't depend on any specific environment. A steam engine at the shoreline terminal, driving the main wheel directly, same principle as every boiler I've built since day one."
Claire nodded slowly, checking the required output against the zeppelin's known specifications. "...That'll handle it easily. Continuous rotation, steady low speed, nowhere near the demands the airship's engine handled at altitude."
"Exactly. This is the easy part, for once," Arista said, grinning at the novelty of it. "No new material to test, no loophole to find, no near-catastrophic failure waiting to teach me something. Just an engine I already know works, doing a job it's more than capable of."
"...I almost don't trust how simple that was," Bram said, watching the whole conversation resolve in under two minutes.
"Let's not tempt it, then," Arista said, already signing off on the finalized design. "Some problems are just already solved. Let's go build the terminal."
