Chapter 144: Chapter 144: I Forge the Path Ahead
Hua Buwan finished reading the unofficial historical records. Hearing the pattering of rain outside, she turned to look out the window.
It was raining in both of their worlds.
How wonderful.
Hua Buwan stood up to close the window before sitting back down at the counter. Her eyes remained fixed on the line of text on her computer screen.
Ling Qianjun would be poisoned. That fact hadn’t changed, which meant the hidden danger still existed.
There was no way to know where or by whom he would be poisoned. All they could do was be as careful as possible.
She had previously taken some time to look into modern Detoxification Pills. There was no such thing as a universal antidote here, and some traditional formulas had already been lost to time. If they encountered a highly lethal poison, there would still be no way to save him.
Recently, Hua Buwan had been doing everything in her power to gather various medicines for emergencies. At the same time, she custom-ordered several Silver Needles and hid them inside wooden pendants with locking clasps. There was one for each of the four members of their family. They could wear them around their necks, tucked under their clothes where no one would see them.
When it was time to eat, they could use the Silver Needles to test for poison. Although not all poisons could be detected by Silver Needles, it was better than nothing.
Hua Buwan knew that Ling Qianjun would definitely come looking for her tonight. She closed the supermarket early and packed the four wooden pendants into a small bag. They were already strung on red cords, ready to be worn immediately.
Additionally, since they had just escaped that desolate place, their bodies were incredibly weak and couldn’t handle heavy, rich foods just yet. So, she specially brewed a gentle, nourishing soup, packed it into disposable containers, and boiled some noodles to go with it. They could eat the noodles and drink the soup together. The portion size was just right—it wouldn’t leave them uncomfortably full.
Having timed everything perfectly, Hua Buwan finished packing up the food.
As soon as night fell, a sound rang out from the back of the store, just as expected. "WELCOME~"
Hua Buwan stood up immediately and hurried toward the back door.
DRIP, DROP. Ling Qianjun was drenched from head to toe. His hair hung limply over his shoulders, leaving him looking rather disheveled.
However, the smile on his face was so radiant—more beautiful than a rainbow—that it made one completely forget his awkward, soaking-wet state.
"Buwan, we finally made it out of the drought-stricken lands! The moment we crossed the boundary, we were met with a heavy downpour. It rained for a long time and only just stopped." Thinking of that moment, Ling Qianjun couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
He rubbed his chest, where he had been guarding the phone. Although the casing was slightly wet, it was working perfectly fine. Fortunately, he hadn’t thrown away two of the plastic bags they had previously used to hold water. When it started raining, he hid the phone inside one of them. The slight dampness was only from the residual moisture inside the bag.
"Look." While everyone had been lying on the ground staring up at the sky, Ling Qianjun had taken a selfie with Ling Qianfan.
Originally, he had only intended to take a picture of himself to show Buwan. But the moment Ling Qianfan saw his brother take out the phone for a selfie, he leaned his head in, bared his teeth in a grin, and flashed a peace sign. Ling Qianjun never got the chance to take another solo shot afterward, so he had no choice but to keep this photo that he wasn’t entirely fond of.
If Hua Buwan knew this, she would probably say, "You can just crop it!"
Unfortunately, there were no "ifs." Ling Qianjun still didn’t know how to use the crop function.
Looking at the photo Ling Qianjun handed her, Hua Buwan couldn’t stop the corners of her lips from curling upward. A classic commercial catchphrase from her childhood TV-watching days suddenly popped into her head. "What is there to fear about the rain? Life is full of hope, and we forge our own paths ahead."
