The savory scent of dinner drifted across Solitude Spire like an invisible, heavenly wave.

On the cedar porch, Felix Vance adjusted his reclining chair by two inches.

He didn’t get up. He simply leaned forward, resting his chin in his hand. He watched the cottage screen door swing open.

Out stepped Lyra Ashford, moving with easy, high-born grace.

Her long silver hair was tied back in a neat warrior’s ponytail, fastened with a pale jade ribbon. Her violet eyes shone with calm pride.

She wore a crisp white apron over her silver student robes, and in her slender hands she carried a three-tiered bamboo steamer.

Thick white clouds of fragrant steam curled from beneath the woven wicker lid.

The steam carried the rich, mouth-watering aroma of braised pork, chopped spring scallions, crushed ginger, and warm sesame oil.

Sitting on the low pine stool by the steps, Sky-Captain Drake nearly fell backward into the clover.

His stomach gave a violent, echoing shudder:

ROOOOOAAAR.

Drake clutched his leather duster coat with both hands, his weathered face flushing crimson.

"Ancestors above..." Drake whispered, his mouth filling with spit. "That smell... That's real meat. Real dough. Real food."

For three weeks, Drake and his crew had survived on rock-hard ship biscuits that had to be soaked in cloudy bilge water before they were soft enough to chew. Smelling freshly steamed pork dumplings was almost enough to bring the veteran pirate admiral to tears.

Up on the gangway of the Iron Gale, First Mate Bones clutched the railing rope with trembling fingers.

"By the void..." Bones whimpered, sniffing the evening breeze like a hound. "The lad’s lady is carrying a feast! Real pork! Smells like heaven itself!"

Lyra set the bamboo steamer gently onto the pine table.

Underneath the table leg, Grandmaster Vivienne’s Sovereign Heart Seal—bearing the hidden glyph the ancient jade seal on its underside—held the table fully rock-steady. Not a single droplet of condensed water rattled on the wooden planks.

"Dinner is prepared, Senior Brother," Lyra said, bowing with solemn respect. "I followed your instructions to the letter."

"Did you let the dough rest?" Felix asked, eyeing the wicker basket with keen interest.

"Yes, Senior Brother," Lyra replied softly. "I rested the flour dough for forty minutes beneath a damp linen cloth. I folded each wrapper twenty-four times, using the mountain spring water from the eastern cliff."

She paused, gesturing respectfully toward the small burlap sack resting beside Felix’s Never-Cold Jade Teacup.

"And as you commanded, Senior Brother," Lyra added, her violet eyes gleaming with holy admiration, "I seasoned the minced Berkshire pork filling with three pinches of the Primordial Cleansing Salt you summoned from the void."

A semi-clear blue HUD box flickered into existence above the bamboo steamer:

Felix smiled faintly, nodding in genuine test.

"Nice," Felix said. "At least that salt drop wasn’t a complete waste. A good dumpling needs enough sodium to bring out the pork fat. Otherwise it just tastes like boiled cardboard."

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.

He calls the sacred stone of universal purification a mere flavor enhancer, Lyra thought, her soul shivering in awe. To Senior Brother, cosmic laws are simply kitchen spices!

Felix swung his legs off the recliner, his worn straw slippers tapping against the cedar floorboards.

"All right," Felix muttered, stretching his arms until his elbows popped. "Let’s set the table. Food is no good if you let it sit around getting cold."

He walked over to the wooden kitchen sideboard and pulled out three pairs of polished wooden chopsticks.

Beside them, he gathered three small celadon dipping bowls.

Felix brought the utensils over to the pine table. He laid them out with careful, practiced care.

"Lyra," Felix said, pointing at the condiments. "Where’s the black vinegar?"

"Right here, Senior Brother," Lyra answered right away.

She produced a clay pot jug of aged Shanxi black vinegar and a small clay jar filled with deep crimson chili oil. Floating within the spicy oil were crushed red peppers, toasted sesame seeds, and fragrant Sichuan peppercorns.

"Always respect the golden ratio," Felix told her, taking the vinegar jug. "Three parts black vinegar, one part chili oil, and just a small dab of crushed garlic. If you use too much vinegar, it drowns the pork. If you use too much chili, your tongue goes numb."

Lyra watched with intense, religious focus.

The Golden Trigram of Harmony! Lyra noted silently in her heart. Three parts yin vinegar to soften the soul, one part yang chili to kindle internal fire, and crushed garlic to dispel demons! Even his table condiments adhere to the supreme Dao of Balance!

Felix poured the dark, aromatic vinegar into each dipping bowl.

Then he spooned a generous dollop of the ruby chili oil right into the center. He was followed by a pinch of fresh garlic.

The tart vinegar swirled together with the fiery oil, releasing an intoxicating, spicy-sour aroma that made Drake’s knees shake on his stool.

Drake watched every movement with wide, breathless eyes.

He saw the delicate white jade teacup resting nearby, streaming its eternal, soothing heat.

He saw the terrifying Sovereign Heart Seal holding the table level against the mountain winds.

And now, he watched this young cosmic sovereign casually setting out a third pair of chopsticks for a pirate who had trespassed on his peak.

"Young master..." Drake rasped, his voice rough with emotion. "You... You truly intend to share this feast with a worthless corsair?"

Felix glanced at Drake, holding a pair of bamboo chopsticks loosely between two fingers.

"Dude," Felix sighed, rolling his eyes. "You’ve been standing on my lawn for thirty minutes looking like a starved scarecrow. If you pass out from low blood sugar, I’d have to drag your heavy coat off my grass. That sounds like way too much cardio."

Felix pointed with the chopsticks toward the stool.

"Sit down," Felix ordered. "Pick up your sticks. Eat before the dough gets gummy."

Drake swallowed the lump in his throat.

He had dined in royal halls where poisoned wine was served in silver goblets. He had eaten at pirate dens where brothers slit each other's throats over a loaf of stale bread.

Yet on this humble wooden porch, a youth who could wipe out planets was handing him a pair of clean bamboo chopsticks and telling him not to let dinner get cold drake pulled the pine stool closer to the table. He sat with rigid, scared discipline.

Up on the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl tilted his brass head.

The hand-carved oak bottle cork remained wedged firmly in Barnaby’s beak, silencing his clockwork squawks. At the same time, his polished copper penny gleamed under his brass talon. His amber crystal lenses clicked once, zooming in on the bamboo steamer.

Down in the clover, the Thunder Gryphon let out a sleepy sigh, its massive golden tail thumping against the dirt as it caught the scent of pork.

Over by the garden fence, Senior Groundskeeper Nether-Bane leaned on his wooden hoe, his glowing blue eye sockets watching the porch with quiet, respectful satisfaction.

Lyra stepped forward, placing her delicate hands on the woven wicker handle of the top steamer tier.

"Opening the vessel, Senior Brother," Lyra announced softly.

Felix leaned forward in his chair, his chopsticks held ready in his right hand.

"Do it," Felix said, his hazel eyes gleaming with pure culinary excitement. "Let’s see the goods."

With a smooth, practiced motion, Lyra lifted the bamboo lid.

WHOOOOOOSH!

A glorious plume of white steam billowed into the evening twilight. It filled the entire porch with the heavenly fragrance of savory pork and sweet dough.

Sitting inside the bamboo basket were thirty plump, crescent-shaped dumplings.

Their semi-clear white skins glistened under the sunset, folded with twenty-four delicate pleats along each curve.

Through the thin dough, the savory filling peeked through. Rich pink pork, dark emerald scallions, and golden droplets of bubbling broth trapped within each perfect dumpling pocket.

The dumplings sat there, piping hot and steaming in the evening air, ready for the feast.

Drake reached out with trembling, calloused fingers and took hold of the wooden chopsticks.

The smooth bamboo felt warm and light in his rough pirate hands. He looked down into his dipping bowl. There, the black vinegar and fiery chili oil swirled like a tiny cosmic galaxy.

Across the deep gap, Inquisitor Valen and the academy elders watched through long-range viewing magic charms. They wept in stunned disbelief.

"He... He's feeding the corsair lord," Valen whispered, his voice trembling with deep respect. "He invited the most dangerous sky-pirate on the continent to sit at his table, and gave him fresh dumplings."

"Such boundless benevolence," Elder Shen murmured. "The Master conquers not with blades, but with pork and steamed dough."

On the porch, Felix smiled, tapping his chopsticks together with a sharp wooden clack.

"They're at the perfect heat," Felix said, his eyes fixed on the glistening wrappers. "Let's eat." The fragrant white steam swirled into the darkening sky. It carried the promise of the most comforting meal the mountain had ever seen. The night air was crisp, the porch was level, and the feast had officially begun.
