Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 850 - 847 A Surprise Attack
Chapter 850: Chapter 847 A Surprise Attack
After finishing the workshop inspections, Lucas and Mina boarded the carriage back to the castle.
Inside the carriage, Mina pulled a letter from her coat and handed it to Lucas. "Master, this is the intelligence regarding the Capital."
This letter had been delivered by the Security Department while they were inspecting the workshops earlier. However, because outsiders were present, she hadn’t given it to Lucas right away.
"..." Lucas took the envelope, opened it, and began reading carefully. His brows sometimes furrowed and sometimes relaxed, before he closed his eyes in deep thought.
Mina reached out and took the drooping letter, reading it carefully herself. A look of confusion appeared on her face as she reached the end.
The letter mentioned that the First Prince had dispatched his knight order to first recapture the other cities surrounding Yalin City, intending to cut off the Second Prince’s retreat.
It also mentioned that the Second Prince was requisitioning grain from other cities, causing endless suffering for the commoners. Even the wheat and rice in the nobles’ homes had been plundered clean.
After finishing the letter, Mina tore it up directly and asked in confusion, "Master, what are Lucia and Greena doing?"
"Greena wants to defend Yalin City, but his grain reserves are insufficient to hold out for long, so he chose to pillage grain from other cities," Lucas had deduced most of it just from the descriptions in the letter.
"Isn’t that no different from being a bandit?" Mina said angrily in a low voice.
The Second Prince hadn’t even spared the commoners. If he had only robbed the nobles, it would have been highly satisfying, but robbing destitute commoners was simply despicable.
"They’re already cooperating with pirates, so devolving into bandits isn’t surprising," Lucas smiled and pinched Mina’s puffed-up cheeks, finding the angry cat-eared girl incredibly cute.
Mina’s face flushed red, and she continued asking, "And the First Prince?"
"Lucia doing this is nothing more than trying to cut off the Second Prince’s retreat, ensuring he has nowhere to run after his defeat," Lucas wrapped an arm around Mina’s waist and explained softly.
"Lucia has made up his mind to kill Greena," Mina leaned into Lucas’s embrace, enjoying the warmth of his chest.
"If Greena loses, there is still one path of retreat left. Even if he doesn’t fall into Lucia’s hands, he still won’t escape his fate," Lucas said casually, twirling Mina’s hair around his finger.
"Master, are you referring to the Sahara Oh right, Perry agreed to help intercept the Second Prince," Mina then remembered their previous trade. When Perry came to Sedona City asking for weapons, they had discussed this condition.
"Very smart," Lucas’s finger brushed past Mina’s red lips, a smile on his face.
"Then who does the Master think will win, Lucia or Greena?" Mina’s eyes were slightly misty. She opened her mouth and gently bit down on the finger brushing past her lips.
"Who wins or loses? That’s not important to us." Lucas shook his head. His eyes flickered with calculation as he stated calmly, "Based on the current situation, the First Prince should win."
Mina released her bite and said excitedly, "It would be best if both sides suffered heavy casualties, then the Master could march into the capital."
"Mutually assured destruction is highly unlikely. Greena’s forces are too weak. He doesn’t have many knights, and their equipment is inferior. Compared to the First Prince, the gap is not just a little bit," Lucas shook his head. While Mina’s idea was good, the probability of it happening was too low.
"I wonder how long they will fight," Mina said.
"It will end before winter arrives," Lucas said. He looked out the window at the passing crowds; the weather wasn’t as sweltering anymore.
Autumn will be arriving very soon. Autumn only lasted for six months. If the war between Lucia and Greena couldn’t be decided within these six months, it would drag on into next year.
Given Lucia’s personality and style of doing things, he wouldn’t allow Greena to live to see next year, as that would give Greena a chance to catch his breath and potentially turn the tables.
In reality, even if Greena plundered a few more cities, the grain he obtained wouldn’t be enough to sustain everyone in Yalin City through autumn. Their food would run out in four months at most, let alone making it to winter.
Therefore, under the influence of various factors, this war would end before winter arrived at the latest.
"After the First Prince takes down the Second Prince, he will make a move against us next year," Lucas reached out and stroked the cat-eared girl’s ears.
"Eh? Won’t Lucia eliminate those pirates first?" Mina asked in surprise, her cat ears twitching slightly from the tickle.
"For Lucia, the pirates can be dealt with slowly, while we appear much easier to handle than pirates. Not to mention Lucy is still here with us. Once he eliminates the Second Prince, the next person he must eliminate is Lucy," Lucas analyzed calmly.
"So that’s how it is. It seems we’ll be fighting the First Prince next year," Mina realized in sudden understanding. Her tone held no fear; with Sedona City’s current strength, they truly didn’t fear the First Prince.
"Who said we have to wait until next year?" Lucas said meaningfully.
"But Master, you just said that the war between the First and Second Princes will last until the end of autumn, followed by winter. As long as the First Prince isn’t stupid, he wouldn’t attack us during the winter," Mina analyzed.
Historically, most who provoked wars in the winter ended up failing. It was practically courting death. Just the issues of food, warmth, and supply transportation were enough to distress people to death.
"It is precisely because he definitely won’t go to war that we will strike first. We will take the initiative to attack. Don’t forget what our Sedona City has..." A trace of icy coldness flashed in Lucas’s eyes.
Mina thought for a moment and instantly understood what Lucas meant.
It was true; others didn’t fight wars in winter because there was no green grass for the warhorses to eat and replenish their energy. Furthermore, knights had to dress incredibly bulkily in winter, and the cold made their hands and feet stiff, making it impossible to move agilely. Naturally, fighting a war was out of the question.
But Sedona City was different. They had vegetable greenhouses, as well as woolen military uniforms and cotton clothes, which were vastly warmer than linen garments.
Even if they got sick during the winter, they had medicine to take, rather than relying on witch doctors haphazardly bleeding them like others did.
"Does that mean we are going to launch a surprise attack on the capital this winter?" Mina looked at Lucas in astonishment.
"We’ll see how the steamship progresses before deciding..." Lucas said . After all, logistical transportation was the biggest problem.
