Chapter 842 -10: Cooperation

Ronald stood by the car, staring blankly at everything, until Chen Zhou finished rummaging through the pockets of the gang members. Only then did Ronald snap out of it and climb into the car with Chen Zhou.

As for the scantily dressed red-haired girl, she didn’t run away scared by what had happened—she simply stepped out of the car, waiting quietly for things to wrap up.

Perhaps those four guys lying on the ground, with broken arms or legs, were waiting for her to call a doctor and get them to a hospital.

…

Sitting in the driver’s seat, Chen Zhou loosened the buttons on his jacket, gripping the steering wheel.

Ronald sat beside him, staring at this mysterious drifter, at a loss for words—

From the drifter’s build, you could tell he must have some fighting skills.

But he never expected the drifter to be this formidable—one against four, ending the fight in a blink, the whole thing a one-sided slaughter.

How could someone like that end up on the streets for no reason?

Whether he was yellow-skinned or black-skinned, even if he didn’t look much like a person, just by virtue of his physique, he could easily make a name in boxing or fighting circles.

At the very least, from Ronald’s limited experience, the guy’s performance in those few seconds was as good as any boxer he’d ever seen fight.

…

The quiet tension in the car didn’t last long. As Chen Zhou shifted gears, the battered Chevrolet let out a furious roar, spun smoothly around, then sped off down the road.

In the remote towns of the United States in 1947, there weren’t many cars. Motorcycles were more common, so traffic jams were basically never a concern.

Though Chen Zhou had never driven a car this ancient—barely even drove stick shift before—his quick reflexes and mechanical intuition let him master it fast, carrying Ronald out of town.

…

“Let me introduce myself. I’m Chen Zhou, a Chinese guy. You can call me Chen—the Zhou isn’t my real surname.

I came here for a special assignment. I can’t tell you the details, but it’s connected to the missing persons case here.

Coincidentally, your daughter is among the missing.

I don’t know if you’ve got any leads, but I feel like we’ve got something in common.

I can help you find your daughter.

In return, you need to arrange an identity for me, and get me a few guns.”

As he spoke, the car had already left the town, heading toward the burned-out house.

Chen Zhou gave Ronald a chance to make up his mind, then pulled over, took out the keys, opened the door, and walked toward the house.

From the look of the guy’s misery earlier, he was sure Ronald would accept the deal, help him gain a foothold here.

Now, he needed to retrieve his saber, then take Ronald with him to track down the pickup truck driver who left earlier.

At that moment, Chen Zhou still had no idea what Ronald had seen in the Brian family home—his main suspect was still the pickup truck driver.

…

Moments later, when Chen Zhou returned with his Long Saber, Ronald had already gotten out of the car. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

He straightened himself up, ignoring the grease and filth on Chen Zhou’s dirty coat, enthusiastically shook his hand, and leaned in close.

“Hello, Chen, I’m Ronald. Ronald Loy.

I don’t really want to say it, but there’s no other choice now, right?

You’re my creditor, and you just saved my life. No matter what, I’ll do you this favor.

But…”

Ronald furrowed his brow, eyeing Chen Zhou’s outfit, and said, troubled:

“I can help you set up an identity, but first I need to get my hands on some money, and you’ll need to clean yourself up a bit. Otherwise, it’ll be hard for me to get you into the upscale hotels.

The guns, though, shouldn’t be that hard to manage, but there’s real risk there.

You have to help me find my daughter first. She’s been missing for almost two days. If I find her as a corpse, I… I can’t let that happen.

If you help me, identity and guns are no problem. I’m willing to take the risk for you, and I can pay you handsomely too.”

At this point, Ronald paused, sizing Chen Zhou up again.

He hesitated, thinking how much he should offer to tempt Chen Zhou.

Clearly, this drifter’s identity and experience weren’t as simple as he presented. Ronald originally thought about offering $2,000 US Dollars—which wasn’t a small sum. A regular American might have to work two years to earn that much.

But remembering Chen Zhou’s actions a moment ago, how he was a lethal, combat-skilled outlaw, how he might be heading for even more dangerous missions, and that he’d just saved Ronald’s life, $2,000 seemed too low.

“$5,000 US Dollars—identity, guns, I can help with both. If you find my daughter, I’ll give you another $5,000 US Dollars as a reward.

That kind of money will let you live large in any city for a year. If you need to go underground and hide, $5,000 will let you live comfortably for the rest of your life.

Sound good?”

Ronald watched Chen Zhou’s soot-covered face eagerly.

Then he saw the corners of the tall man’s mouth curve slightly, revealing a hint of a smile.

Ronald assumed he was tempted by the money, but he had no idea—Chen Zhou actually didn’t care about any of it.

Whether in 1947’s United States or in modern society, money meant nothing to him. All Chen Zhou wanted was to finish his mission and get back to his own world. As for the $5,000 US Dollars, whether he got it or not made no difference at all.
