Star Ship Girl Era: My Shipgirls Are Too Overpowered

Chapter 430: Adaptive Strategic Cognition Matrix

Caelira’s fuel-transfer equipment was restored, and her repair drones began undergoing tests.

Her missile situation was less impressive.

Neris approved an initial stock of defensive and medium-range missiles, but refused to authorize production of new heavy jump missiles until Helion had finished studying the manufacturing requirements.

Caelira complained about that for two days.

Then she discovered that Neris was willing to let her help design a better ammunition storage system.

The complaints stopped.

Aurelian suspected that giving Caelira something useful to do was the easiest way to keep her happy.

Vaelith’s forward accelerator finally passed its first structural test.

The replacement focusing rails were installed, the alignment was corrected, and Meridian approved a low-power firing trial inside Helion’s controlled weapons range.

Vaelith immediately requested a full-power test.

Meridian refused.

Aurelian supported Meridian.

Vaelith was unhappy with both of them, but she attended the low-power trial anyway.

The weapon performed well.

That was enough to improve her mood.

Talyra’s destroyer also progressed steadily, and she spent much of her repair period working with Eirenne.

The two of them reviewed the old convoy wreck records and the survey station near M-17.

Neither assignment was urgent enough to justify diverting ships immediately, but both were added to the next reconnaissance schedule.

Elowen agreed to check the old survey station’s outer approach during her existing orbital survey work, provided it did not interfere with M-17’s environmental restrictions.

Aurelian accepted that condition.

The planet was still under a one-year survey, and he had no intention of turning its surrounding space into a busy salvage route simply because an old station might contain useful equipment.

Annex Seven was also making progress.

Lysara reported that the repaired relay was handling regular traffic without major interruptions.

Selvarin and Veylora continued overseeing local security and maintenance while the repair machines restored more of the station’s internal systems.

The Adaptive Strategic Cognition Matrix remained under restricted operation.

Meridian had not yet visited the station in person, and Aurelian refused to authorize permanent integration until she completed that inspection.

Helion had no shortage of work in the meantime.

The situation at Valeris Reach required more attention.

The seven-day ceasefire had been extended through another round of negotiations, but the recovery-boundary discussions were becoming difficult.

Orison had reduced several of its claims after receiving the old legal records supplied through the Alliance, yet it still insisted on controlling the wreck fields closest to its repair yard.

Valeris wanted access to the mining routes it had used for decades.

Neither side was willing to give up everything.

Aurelian did not expect them to.

He instructed Rhoswen to maintain the defensive patrol arrangement and continue supporting the talks without promising Crownward protection.

The Valeris council had asked again.

His answer remained the same.

They could discuss a formal agreement, but he would not make one while the recovery boundaries were unsettled and nobody knew whether the current ceasefire would last.

That decision became important when Rhoswen sent him a report from the latest meeting.

Orison had offered to establish two recognized civilian shipping corridors through the disputed region.

In exchange, Valeris would agree not to salvage from the three wreck fields at the center of the original dispute until an independent review was complete.

Aurelian studied the proposal.

It was not a final settlement, but it was workable.

"Tell them Crownward can help monitor the corridors," he said.

Rhoswen nodded from the display.

"With patrol ships?"

"With navigation records and observation. We’re not taking responsibility for every ship that enters Valeris space."

She looked disappointed.

"You keep making that distinction."

"Because it matters."

"I know."

"How is Mara Venn?"

"Busy. Kestrel’s people are repairing their station, and they’re angry about the ships Orison dismantled."

"Understandable."

"She wants compensation."

"Then she should raise it during the talks."

Rhoswen leaned back.

"You’re really going to make everyone negotiate everything."

"If it works."

"And if it doesn’t?"

"Then we’ll deal with that."

She accepted the answer, although Aurelian suspected she would have preferred something more direct.

A few days later, Meridian completed Vaelith’s final accelerator inspection.

The weapon was cleared for normal operation, though the engineers still wanted several controlled firing tests before approving sustained maximum output.

Vaelith considered that a victory.

Aurelian considered it another repair bill he could finally stop worrying about.

Talyra’s destroyer was also approaching completion.

With Seraphiel already available for limited operations and Caelira’s support systems becoming usable, Crownward’s new ships were beginning to move from repair projects into actual fleet planning.

Aurelian gathered the relevant commanders at Helion to review the next stage.

Astra attended beside him.

Eirenne appeared through projection, while Neris, Meridian, Seraphiel, Caelira, Vaelith, and Talyra joined them around the tactical table.

Rhoswen attended remotely from Valeris.

Aurelian opened the fleet map.

"We’ve added several ships recently, but that doesn’t mean I’m sending everyone out immediately. I want the repairs finished, the supply requirements understood, and the new formations tested before we start taking on more work."

Caelira nodded.

"Especially the supply requirements."

Neris looked at her.

"Don’t start."

"I wasn’t going to."

Aurelian continued before they could argue.

"Seraphiel will coordinate the first formation trials with Astra and Eirenne. Caelira will work with Neris on the mobile support group. Vaelith will remain at Helion until Meridian clears her final weapons tests."

Vaelith opened her mouth.

Aurelian looked at her.

"Final tests."

She closed it again.

"Talyra will begin reconnaissance work once her destroyer is ready. Start with the old convoy site, but don’t enter unknown wreck fields without a proper hazard survey."

Talyra nodded.

"Understood."

Rhoswen leaned toward her camera.

"What about me?"

"You stay at Valeris until the current talks reach a stable agreement."

She sighed.

"I knew you were going to say that."

"Then why ask?"

"I hoped you’d surprise me."

Aurelian moved on.

The fleet wouldn’t expand indefinitely.

Helion had already recovered several useful ships, and more dormant command cores remained under inspection, but he was placing the remaining awakenings on hold until the current vessels were properly integrated.

Meridian agreed.

Neris looked relieved.

Even Caelira accepted the decision once Aurelian reminded her that unfinished ships competed for the same materials as her missile production.

For the next few weeks, Crownward would concentrate on repairs, training, and regional defense.

Aurelian also wanted the first proper exercises involving Seraphiel’s coordination network.

It was one thing for the system to work with a handful of patrol ships.

It was another to coordinate Black Crown, Vaelith, Caelira, and the rest of the fleet during a complicated engagement.

They needed practice before trusting it in battle.

The meeting ended with everyone receiving their assignments.

Aurelian remained behind with Astra and Eirenne to review the Valeris situation.

The negotiations had made progress, but Orison’s fleet was still sitting beyond the recovery boundary.

Thirty-nine armed ships had been confirmed, and the actual number might be higher.

Aurelian had no intention of treating the ceasefire as a permanent guarantee.

He considered sending Talyra on a distant observation mission once her repairs were complete when Eirenne suddenly stopped speaking.

A new report appeared on the tactical display.

Aurelian looked up.

"What happened?"

"Valeris outer patrol has detected unidentified vessels approaching the agreed shipping corridor."

"Orison?"

"Unknown."

Rhoswen’s communication channel opened a moment later.

Her expression was serious.

"Commander, we have a problem."

Aurelian brought up the live tactical map.

Three ships had appeared near the corridor’s outer edge.

They moved slowly, their weapons inactive, but their identification signals didn’t match any vessel registered with Valeris or Orison.

Rhoswen continued.

"They’re heading toward the civilian traffic route. Valeris patrols are moving to intercept."

Aurelian studied their course.

"Have they answered any hails?"

"Not yet."

"Keep your ships back and send another identification request. No one fires unless they attack first."

"Understood."

Eirenne enlarged the sensor profiles.

The three vessels were old.

Their hulls carried a mixture of Human and Vhaloric components, but their arrangement did not match the Orison ships previously recorded.

Then one of the unidentified vessels transmitted a short message.

It was addressed directly to Crownward command.

Eirenne played it.

"Commander Aurelian Arcturus. We request permission to enter Valeris Reach under neutral passage. We have information concerning Orison’s recovery authority that your negotiators need to hear."

Aurelian looked toward Astra.

That was unexpected.

Rhoswen spoke through the channel.

"Do we let them in?"

Aurelian examined the three ships again.

He did not recognize them.

He did not know whether their information was genuine.

But they had approached with their weapons inactive and requested passage instead of forcing their way through.

"Hold them at the outer checkpoint," he said. "Inspect their identification and ask who they represent. If they agree to the normal security procedures, we can hear what they have to say."

Rhoswen nodded.

"And if they refuse?"

"Then they don’t enter."

The channel remained open as the orders went out.

Aurelian watched the three ships slow near the checkpoint.

The Orison negotiations had already been complicated enough.

Now someone else had arrived claiming to know something about the authority that controlled the repair yard.

He hoped they had brought useful information.

He had a feeling the next few days would be busy again.
