Chapter 281: Silent Accord Before The Storm!
Chapter 281: Silent Accord Before The Storm!
’Vaelith, speak telepathically directly to Duke’s mind. Tell him the message is from me and that he has to trust in and support what I’m about to do. Tell him that Isolde is possessed by an Invader. The one speaking with him isn’t Isolde, and she has probably been possessed for years.’
The words settled like falling ash, silent yet suffocating in their weight. Deep within Bruce’s consciousness, Vaelith stirred. It did not panic. But it understood the gravity of everything.
[Very well.]
Across from him, Duke sat relaxed, one ankle resting lightly over the opposite knee, fingers draped loosely over the armrest as though he were merely enjoying an afternoon exchange in a pleasant court rather than standing at the edge of something that could fracture kingdoms.
Isolde was still speaking, her tone smooth, unhurried, perfectly composed.
“Authority is not oppression,” she said calmly. “It is structure. Without structure, strength disperses. And dispersed strength is easily devoured.”
Her voice flowed like silk over ice, elegant, controlled, flawless.
At that same moment, a second voice entered Duke’s mind.
Not intrusive. Not forceful. But vast and Ancient.
[Supreme Guildmaster Duke.]
Despite everything coming as a surprise, Duke’s expression did not change, not even slightly. He lifted his cup and took a slow sip, the porcelain touching his lips with quiet precision.
’Interesting,’ he thought lazily, as though noting the weather rather than the presence of an entity older than empires.
[This message is relayed through me at the request of the one beside you.]
There was only a microscopic shift in his gaze. That was all. Duke set the cup down with a soft click. ’Go on.’
[The Empress before you is not the true sovereign of this body.]
Silence stretched inside his mind, thin and taut as drawn wire.
[She is possessed.]
The frost in the hall seemed to deepen, as if the world itself leaned closer to listen.
[The entity speaking to you is an Invader.]
Still Duke’s face remained composed. Only his eyes changed. Barely.
[The possession is not recent. It has likely persisted for years.]
A pause followed, deliberate, allowing the weight of that truth to settle.
[He asks that you trust him. And that you support what he is about to do.]
The message ended.
Outwardly, Duke sighed softly, as though mildly bored by political philosophy and courtly rhetoric.
Inside, his thoughts sharpened like blades. Possessed. His gaze drifted lazily back toward Isolde.
She stood poised and radiant beneath the pale light, every inch a monarch, perfect posture, measured breathing, presence absolute. Nothing about her seemed unnatural. Which was exactly the problem.
His eyes narrowed by a fraction.
’Years,’ he repeated inwardly. ’That meant the takeover had been subtle. Calculated. Patient. An infiltration, not a conquest. She might even have been possessed already during my first meeting with her years ago.’
His fingers casually tapped once against the armrest, the faint motion the only outward sign that his mind had begun to move.
Then he replied. Not aloud.
’Who are you?’
[The Will of the World.]
A faint pause.
’I know he and I are close and all that,’ Duke thought, tone still casual even within his own mind, ’but why should I trust you? Why should I trust him and not Isolde?’
Within Bruce’s consciousness, Vaelith exhaled slowly, an ancient presence considering a mortal question that was anything but simple. It recognized the truth instantly that Duke was searching for something to hold onto. Not doubt, not denial. Validation. He already believed Bruce. But belief, in matters like this, required something firmer than instinct.
[If it’s validation you want,] Vaelith thought, ancient will settling into quiet resolve, [I will give it to you.]
It did not trouble Bruce over something so small. Instead, it activated one of its numerous skills.
[Do you sense anything?]
Duke’s perception sharpened instinctively, senses brushing against something vast, and there it was. A link. Subtle, direct, undeniable. A thread connecting him to something immeasurable. The sensation was not pressure. It was not domination. It was euphoria.
Pure, ambient vitality flowing along an unseen current, brushing against his core like sunlight warming cold skin. The eccentric corner of his mind smiled faintly.
’It’s not enough.’
The response came without hesitation. Vaelith didn’t waste time activating another skill.
The next second a notification appeared.
[The Will of the World has boosted your mana regeneration by 50%.]
Silence.
Vaelith’s presence regarded him. ’How about that?’
For the first time, Duke found no immediate reply. Not because he lacked words, but because refutation had become impossible. The proof was not a claim. It was reality itself adjusting at another’s command. His mind stilled, acknowledging the truth with the same calm precision he applied to everything else.
Then, toward the presence he now recognized as Vaelith, he spoke.
’Tell Bruce this.’
The thought carried calm authority, clean and unwavering.
’He has my full support.’
A faint smile tugged at Duke’s lips, subtle enough that anyone watching would assume it was meant for Isolde’s ongoing speech.
’I’ll make sure no one here interferes.’
Vaelith relayed it instantly. Bruce heard it as clearly as spoken words, the ancient voice resonating through his mind with quiet certainty. ’You have his full support. He will make sure no one interferes.’
Bruce didn’t move. He didn’t blink. To any observer, he looked exactly as he had a moment ago, calm, composed, nothing more than a polite guest seated within a monarch’s hall. But something in his gaze sharpened, a minute tightening of focus that made his pupils seem darker, deeper, like blades being drawn silently from their sheaths.
At that same moment, a maid approached.
She came without sound, her steps so precise they seemed rehearsed rather than walked. In her hands rested a long silver tray polished to mirror brightness, its surface reflecting the pale glow of the palace lights like frozen moonlight.
