SSS-Ranked Lust System: Taming Beauties Is My Calling
Chapter 148: No way out
David did not move.
The darkness in front of him had no shape.
Not one he could understand.
It was simply there.
Vast.
Watching.
Elena’s fingers tightened around his.
David glanced at her.
She was staring into the darkness too.
But unlike him, she wasn’t afraid.
She looked confused.
"Do you know what that is?"
"No."
The voice came again.
"You should."
David’s eyes narrowed.
The darkness shifted.
Something moved inside it.
Not toward them.
Around them.
As if the darkness itself had become aware that they were standing inside it.
David looked down.
There was still no ground beneath his feet.
Yet he wasn’t falling.
He could stand.
He could breathe.
He could hear Elena breathing beside him.
That alone was enough to tell him this wasn’t a memory.
"What are you?" David asked.
The darkness remained silent.
Then the voice answered.
"I am what you left behind."
David’s expression hardened.
"I left a lot behind."
"Not like this."
Elena looked at him.
David didn’t respond.
Something moved in the distance.
A faint outline appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
Worlds.
Thousands of them.
They floated through the darkness like fragments of broken glass.
David saw cities.
Wars.
People.
Entire civilizations appearing for a moment before disappearing again.
Some were familiar.
Others weren’t.
He watched one world burn.
Another froze.
Another collapsed inward as if something had simply removed the rules holding it together.
David’s breathing slowed.
"You’ve been watching."
"Since before you remembered how to watch."
David looked toward the voice.
"Why?"
"Because you created the boundary."
David’s eyes narrowed.
"The original boundary?"
"Yes."
Elena stepped forward.
"Then you’re the one behind it."
The darkness shifted.
For the first time, something seemed to focus on her.
"You remember."
Elena shook her head.
"Not enough."
"You remember enough to fear me."
"I don’t fear you."
David looked at her.
She didn’t sound brave.
She sounded certain.
The darkness became still.
Then it spoke.
"You should."
David stepped in front of Elena.
The darkness seemed to notice.
"You still do that."
"Do what?"
"Stand between her and things you don’t understand."
David’s jaw tightened.
"I’ve done it before."
"You’ve done it every time."
The words settled heavily between them.
David looked at Elena.
She looked back.
Neither spoke.
The voice continued.
"And every time, you failed."
David’s expression didn’t change.
But Elena felt his hand tighten around hers.
"Don’t," she whispered.
David looked at her.
"Don’t listen to it."
The darkness laughed.
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t even particularly human.
It sounded like something remembering the concept of laughter.
"You think it is trying to hurt you."
David stared ahead.
"It is."
"No."
The darkness moved.
"It is trying to remind you."
The worlds surrounding them suddenly disappeared.
Everything became black again.
Then David saw a single image.
A younger version of himself.
Not the one who had carried the Crown.
An even younger one.
Standing alone in a place David had never seen.
There was blood on his hands.
He was crying.
Not from pain.
From exhaustion.
David stared.
"What is this?"
The younger David lifted his head.
He wasn’t looking at them.
He was looking at something in front of him.
Something David couldn’t see.
Then he spoke.
"How many times?"
David froze.
The younger version whispered again.
"How many times do I have to do this?"
Elena’s face changed.
"David."
"I know."
The younger David fell to his knees.
The image flickered.
Then another appeared.
The same place.
The same David.
Older.
Then younger.
Then older again.
Each version stood in the same spot.
Each carried the same expression.
Each asked the same question.
"How many times?"
David stepped forward.
The image disappeared.
Another appeared.
Elena.
She was standing alone.
Crying.
But this time, David wasn’t there.
She looked toward something outside the frame.
Then she said:
"I know you’re watching."
David stopped.
The darkness went silent.
Elena stared at the memory.
"I didn’t know she remembered that."
David looked at her.
"Neither did I."
The memory continued.
Elena wiped her eyes.
"You don’t have to keep doing this."
Something answered her.
A voice.
David’s voice.
But older.
Colder.
"I can’t stop."
Elena shook her head.
"Yes, you can."
"No."
"You can."
"I already tried."
"You tried to change the ending."
The older David said nothing.
Elena stepped closer to whatever was standing beyond the memory.
"You never tried accepting it."
The memory vanished.
David stood completely still.
The voice returned.
"Now you understand."
"No."
David looked into the darkness.
"I understand what she wanted."
"Do you?"
"You showed me."
"I showed you what you were willing to see."
David’s eyes narrowed.
"Then show me the rest."
Elena turned toward him.
"David—"
"I need to know."
"You already know enough."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"That’s the problem."
The darkness seemed to expand.
David felt something pressing against his mind.
Not invading it.
Waiting.
"Very well."
The darkness opened.
And David remembered.
Not one memory.
All of them.
He saw the first world.
The first city.
The first boundary.
He saw himself standing at the center of something impossibly vast.
There were no founders yet.
No facility.
No Crown.
No Silence.
Only him.
And beside him stood another figure.
David couldn’t see its face.
But he knew the figure.
He had always known it.
The voice spoke.
"You wanted a world without endings."
David’s eyes widened.
The memory continued.
He watched himself reach toward the figure.
"What happened?"
The other figure answered.
"You happened."
David shook his head.
"No."
"You created the first boundary because you could not accept death."
The image changed.
Elena appeared.
Alive.
Smiling.
David saw himself with her.
Not in a battlefield.
Not during the collapse.
Somewhere peaceful.
A normal place.
A kitchen.
Elena was cooking.
David was sitting nearby.
They were arguing about something meaningless.
The sight hurt more than any battlefield.
Because it looked real.
Because it looked possible.
Because David had never remembered it.
Elena covered her mouth.
"I remember this."
David looked at her.
"You do?"
"Not everything."
She stared at the memory.
"But this..."
Her voice broke.
"I remember this."
The image continued.
Elena placed a plate in front of David.
"You’ve been staring at that for five minutes."
David’s younger self looked at the food.
"I’m thinking."
"That’s dangerous."
He smiled.
The memory changed.
They were older.
Then younger.
Then older again.
Different worlds.
Different lives.
Same two people.
In every one, David found Elena.
In every one, he lost her.
And every time she died, he tried again.
David watched himself tear worlds apart.
He watched himself create boundaries.
He watched him split memories.
Create the founders.
Create the Crown.
Create the younger version.
Create the Silence.
All of it.
Every system.
Every safeguard.
Every prison.
Every attempt to make death obey him.
David’s face went pale.
Elena stared at him.
"You did all this."
David didn’t answer.
The voice spoke.
"You did it because you loved her."
David looked toward the darkness.
"Then why did you stop me?"
The darkness remained silent.
David stepped forward.
"Why?"
"Because you stopped being yourself."
David frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"You loved her."
The darkness moved.
"Then you decided that loving her meant the universe had to obey you."
David’s fists tightened.
"You could have stopped me."
"I did."
"When?"
The darkness opened.
David saw it.
The first time he had created the boundary.
He saw himself standing before the figure.
The same figure from the beginning.
The figure reached toward him.
David heard himself say:
"If I can’t accept her death, I’ll make death irrelevant."
The figure answered:
"And if the world refuses?"
David’s younger self looked up.
"Then I’ll make another world."
The memory shattered.
David staggered.
Elena caught him.
"David."
He steadied himself.
"I remember."
The darkness spoke.
"Do you?"
David looked up.
"Yes."
"You remember creating everything."
David nodded.
"You remember destroying everything."
"Yes."
"You remember her."
David looked at Elena.
"Yes."
"You remember why you forgot."
David’s eyes lowered.
"Yes."
The darkness became still.
"Then you remember me."
David looked toward it.
"No."
The silence that followed felt enormous.
David slowly shook his head.
"I remember what I did."
"But not me."
"No."
The darkness moved closer.
This time, David could see something.
Two enormous eyes opened.
They weren’t human.
They weren’t even eyes in any normal sense.
They looked like two holes cut into reality.
Inside them were countless worlds.
David stared.
The voice became quieter.
"I was the first thing you created."
David’s expression changed.
Elena looked at him.
"What?"
The voice continued.
"Before the Crown."
A pause.
"Before the boundary."
Another.
"Before the founders."
David’s eyes widened.
"Before the Silence."
The darkness leaned closer.
"I was the part of you that knew you were wrong."
David stopped breathing.
The words struck deeper than any memory.
"You created me because you could not bear to know it."
David stared.
"So you separated yourself."
"Yes."
"You made me carry the truth."
"Yes."
"And then you forgot me."
"No."
The voice became almost gentle.
"You erased yourself from me."
David’s face hardened.
"Why?"
"Because you were afraid."
David shook his head.
"I wasn’t afraid."
"You were."
"I wasn’t."
"You begged."
David froze.
The darkness showed him another memory.
David stood before the figure.
Broken.
Bleeding.
Begging.
"Take it from me."
The figure looked at him.
"I can’t."
"Please."
"You created me to remember."
"I don’t want to remember."
"You will."
David fell to his knees.
"I can’t."
The memory vanished.
David stood motionless.
Elena looked at him.
"You begged it."
David nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"For what?"
David stared into the darkness.
"To forget."
The voice answered for him.
"Not everything."
David’s eyes narrowed.
"Then what?"
"The choice."
David went still.
The same choice.
The one the younger version had remembered.
The one Elena had died for.
The one David had erased.
The voice continued.
"You didn’t erase Elena."
David looked at her.
"You erased the moment you chose to let her die."
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
David shook his head.
"No."
"Yes."
"You said she asked me."
"She did."
"Then what did I choose?"
The darkness opened wider.
A final memory appeared.
David and Elena stood before the original boundary.
The world behind them was collapsing.
The Silence was coming.
Elena was dying.
David held the Crown.
He could save her.
He could also save the world.
But not both.
Elena looked at him.
"David."
He was crying.
"I can still save you."
"I know."
"I can do it."
"I know."
"I just need more time."
Elena stepped closer.
"You don’t have more time."
David looked at the Crown.
Then at her.
Then at the collapsing world.
Elena took his hand.
"Choose."
David shook his head.
"I can’t."
"You can."
"I can’t lose you."
"You already are."
David closed his eyes.
The memory froze.
The voice spoke.
"This was the moment."
David stared.
"The choice that created everything."
Elena whispered beside him.
"What did you choose?"
David looked at her.
For the first time, he understood why the memory had always been buried.
Not because it was too painful.
Because there had been no way to make the choice clean.
He had chosen the world.
And Elena had accepted it.
But David had refused to accept himself for making that choice.
So he created the Crown.
The boundary.
The Silence.
The founders.
The younger version.
He had built an entire existence around escaping the person who had made that decision.
David closed his eyes.
Then he opened them.
"I chose the world."
Elena smiled through her tears.
"I know."
The darkness became silent.
David stepped forward.
"And I hated myself for it."
"Yes."
"I thought if I forgot her, I could forget what I had done."
"Yes."
"I was wrong."
"Yes."
David looked at Elena.
She reached for his hand.
He took it.
Then David looked toward the enormous eyes.
"But I’m not that man anymore."
The darkness shifted.
"You think remembering changed you?"
"No."
David’s grip tightened around Elena’s hand.
"Remembering showed me that I was never allowed to stop changing."
The darkness stared at him.
David stepped forward.
"So what happens now?"
For the first time, the voice did not answer immediately.
Then the darkness began to retreat.
The worlds around them started disappearing.
One by one.
Elena looked around.
"David."
"I see it."
The darkness was collapsing inward.
Not dying.
Opening.
A path appeared ahead.
A single line of white light.
At its end stood a silhouette.
David stared.
The figure looked familiar.
Too familiar.
The silhouette raised its head.
And David recognized the face.
His own.
But older.
Much older.
The figure smiled.
"Now we can begin."
David’s expression hardened.
"Begin what?"
The older version looked at Elena.
Then back at David.
"The part you never remembered."
The white path opened beneath them.
Elena’s hand tightened around his.
David stepped forward.
This time, he didn’t hesitate.
And somewhere beyond the darkness, something began waking up.
