Chapter 759: The Unquiet Vessel
Chapter 759 — The Unquiet Vessel
Leon let his false self step onto the shelf.
Mist folded around the image’s legs. Its left arm stayed close to its body, guarding the place where the hunter had wounded him. A trace of his qi lingered at the crossing, and blood marked the stone beneath its hand.
The hunter watched from the ledge.
Leon made the image turn toward the exit.
That was when the hunter moved.
It came low and fast, gray skin showing between strips of dark hide. A pale bone mask covered its face. The spear extended toward the false Leon’s back as its wielder pushed off the last secure part of the ledge.
Leon dropped from above.
Earth answered first. The ledge behind the hunter split and fell away. Ice spread beneath its leading foot as the spear passed through the image and struck the cliff.
The hunter reacted before Leon landed.
It ripped the blade free, turned the shaft across its body, and brought the hook sweeping toward his face. He caught the wood below the head with his left hand while his sword checked the other end.
The hunter rolled its grip, trying to twist free. The hooked edge nicked the heel of Leon’s palm before he forced the head outward.
He pulled hard.
Its footing broke on the ice. Rather than fight his strength, it released the spear and dropped toward the shelf’s open edge.
Leon drove a barrier of wind up across the drop.
The hunter struck it and twisted back toward him, a short knife appearing in its hand. Even now it tried to get inside his sword’s reach.
Leon had spent long enough letting it choose the distance.
He stepped into the lunge, turned the knife arm with the captured shaft, and drove his sword through the bone mask. Lightning followed the blade. The hunter stiffened, then collapsed against him.
He pushed it clear and kept his weapon ready until it lay still.
No second shape slipped into the mist. No last weapon came out of the wrappings.
Leon finally lowered his sword.
"You nearly got that hand," he muttered.
The cut across his palm was small, though it made him wince when he loosened his grip. He cleaned it and pressed a fresh strip over it. The older graze beneath his sleeve had remained closed. Neither injury would keep him from climbing out.
What bothered him more was how confidently he had chosen that first bare shelf.
He had looked for space to fight and overlooked who might already be watching it. Against a stronger opponent, that mistake could have cost much more than a strip of cloth.
[Optional objective complete: The Hunter has been defeated]
Leon looked up toward the pale light.
There was still an objective left. Killing the hunter had not moved the exit any closer.
He took the last shelves on foot, checking the ground out of habit now. The climb gave him time to consider the fight without another hook appearing from the mist. His reserves remained comfortable; most of the trial had demanded patience and attention rather than overwhelming power.
At the top, he stepped into the marked circle.
[Mandatory objective complete: Exit reached]
[Floor Five — Cleared]
[Evaluation: SSS]
[Reward Selection available. Choose one.]
Three choices appeared.
[Hunter’s Reading — Technique. Interpret traces of movement, energy, and passage.]
[Elemental Cache — High-grade crystals of mixed affinity, sufficient for extended cultivation.]
[Inheritance: The Unquiet Vessel — Knowledge of unstable energies held under compression.]
Leon’s attention caught on the first option.
He could think of several uses for it before finishing the description. Tracking an enemy who believed himself hidden. Noticing someone watching his route. Recognizing the traces his own movements left before another spear found them.
His palm gave a small, timely sting.
"Yes, I know," he told it.
The cache was tempting too. He had learned exactly how quickly serious cultivation research could consume good materials. More fuel would never be unwelcome.
But he kept returning to the third choice.
He could gather resources. He could practice reading his surroundings, even if the offered technique would make that work easier. Knowledge directly relevant to the compressed structure he was trying to build was harder to replace.
"The Unquiet Vessel," he said.
[Selected: Inheritance — The Unquiet Vessel]
Knowledge settled into his awareness in layers. He understood only the beginning before recognizing how much study it would take. These were observations, examples, and methods of examining compression, not a finished cultivation technique ready to be placed inside him.
He found an introductory comparison and followed it.
Two compressed spheres turned side by side. Their shapes and outer rhythms looked alike. Even the visible routes within them appeared orderly at first.
The inheritance directed his attention deeper.
In the first sphere, different currents carried different loads. One moved quickly through a narrow route; another turned more slowly through a broad one. When their interaction created strain, the structure redistributed it instead of leaving it trapped at a single junction.
The second sphere also remained round.
But each cycle left a tiny amount of unresolved strain where two currents met. The next turn added more. The outer shape gave no obvious warning because the surrounding arrangement continued to hold it in place.
Leon followed the example forward.
A hundred cycles passed. It still looked stable.
Later, the hidden accumulation exceeded what that junction could bear. The sphere split from within.
He stopped skimming.
What happens at my linking thread after the seventh return?
He had watched the water shift. He had checked the restored routes and confirmed that no manual correction was needed. Those results remained true.
But returning to a familiar position did not, by itself, prove that every trace of the interruption had been resolved. He had not measured whether repeated adjustments left strain at the connection, or whether it dispersed between tests.
His model might be handling that perfectly well.
He had no evidence either way.
Leon went back through the comparison, slower this time. The useful part was not simply the warning that compressed things could fail. He already knew that. It was the distinction between what the structure looked like after recovering and what remained inside it afterward.
The inheritance offered ways to examine that difference. He would have to learn them, then see which could be adapted to his own qi model.
For a moment, he imagined moving the bead into his body because seven clean recoveries had made him impatient.
He looked down at the binding across his palm.
A scratch was a very manageable price for the lesson he had just learned about confidence. He preferred to keep the next lesson on Ji’s plates.
When he returned to his dimensional world, the practice area was quiet. His notes and cleaned equipment waited where he had stored them; the model itself had been safely dispersed before he left.
Vyra looked up from her own work as he approached. Her gaze went first to his hand, then to his face.
"Did you get something useful?"
"Very." Leon set the equipment case between them. "I need to build it again."
She closed her notes. "Another interruption test?"
"More than seven this time." He opened the case and took out a plate. "And I need to find out what’s left behind after each one."
