Chapter 49: The Birth of Vulcan
Chapter 49: Chapter 49: The Birth of Vulcan
"Iron sharpens iron." — Proverbs 27:17
---
The hounds watched Joel walk toward the center of their land. Not one of them tried to stop him.
Hundreds of hounds stood in silent lines along the terraces.
Their master lay dead on his own land. The small, burned figure crossing the plain had killed him.
The Iron Wastes had been built on one rule: numbers never lied, and results mattered more than anything else.
The corpse was still settling when Joel reached it.
The giant stood frozen on its three remaining legs. Its massive hammer lay beside it, half-buried in the plain.
The furnace visor had gone dark, like a closed door. The glow along the seams of its twenty-foot body slowly faded from gold to dull red, like a fire dying down for the night.
Waves of heat rose from the dead metal. The ground beneath Joel’s boots was still hot.
He stood in the shadow of the giant hammer and began the inspection he had crossed a kilometer of fire to complete.
"The plan needs heavy metal," Joel thought as he slowly walked around the dead smith, his hands folded behind his back.
Nyx was a needle. She could slip into almost anywhere, kill anything, and leave without a trace. But a needle could not hold territory, break walls, or stand in a public square and make an army think twice before attacking.
What his growing army had lacked from the start was a voice that could be heard before he even arrived.
And this corpse had the loudest voice in the Iron Wastes.
[Ding!]
[Fate-Bound Legion activated.]
[Target Core: Forge-Lord (Lv. 40, Stratum Boss) detected.]
[Initiating Fate-Bound Legion...]
[Soul-forge ignition required. Cost: 36/36 Mana, sustained vitality draw.]
[Warning: ignition at this grade will be FELT.]
He paid the cost while standing, both hands pressed against the dead iron.
•••
The ignition drained his account like a wound bleeding dry. Cold fire burned through his body and poured out through his palms.
The whole basin reacted at once. The vents along the terraces drew in air together.
FSSSH.
The river of molten slag bent toward the corpse, and the hounds’ pale electricity grew brighter in a slow wave. Hundreds of lights turned toward the center, like a crowd facing an altar.
Joel stood in the middle of it all, his knees locked and his teeth clenched. He felt as if he were being drained for a cause worth the price.
When the forge had finally taken all the fuel it needed, the System presented its offer with the same cold politeness as always.
[Optional: Fate Energy may be wagered to amplify the reforging output.]
[Standard output: restoration at death fidelity. Mass and dimensions preserved.]
[Amplified output: architecture redrawn. The forge may be reforged.]
’One point,’ Joel decided, swaying on his feet but refusing to sit down in front of the clerks. ’The last multiplier was x12,000, and this Wheel has never failed to surprise me with its madness. I’ll take the risk.’
[Ding!]
[Fate Point Wagered: 1. The Wheel of Fate spins...]
Click... click... click... click... clack.
[Result: x25,000 Multiplier Achieved.]
[Soul-forge output: x25,000. No precedent found. No precedent sought.]
•••
The Forge-Lord’s corpse began to collapse inward.
A deep groan came from its iron body. Then the twenty-foot giant folded into itself, growing smaller and denser.
The metal around the basin began to move. Loose plates lifted off the terraces and flew toward the center. The shrapnel wind changed direction, pulling iron from across the plain. Even the molten slag rose from the river and flowed through the air in glowing orange streams.
Everything moved toward the center.
Then it all disappeared inside the collapsing corpse.
Then the ghostly smith began to work, and Joel realized he was watching something being forged.
THMM.
The first strike echoed across the basin like a giant bell. There was no hammer and no smith, only the sound of the blows. The glowing mass at the center shook and grew smaller.
THMM. THMM.
Joel stood outside the light, his mana empty and his ribs aching. He felt he was watching something being born, just as he had been born again himself.
First came destruction. Then came rebuilding.
Joel didn’t know how long he stood there. At some point, the rhythm changed. The blows grew slower and farther apart, like workers finishing their shift.
Then the final blow fell.
THMM.
Afterward, silence filled the basin.
•••
The figure that rose from the dying fire stood four meters tall. It looked like a fortress that had learned to walk.
It was not just a smaller version of the dead giant. The old giant had been huge and bulky.
Its body was covered in layers of dark metal plates. Unlike the old smith’s armor, which had been held together with rivets, these plates were joined without a single visible seam.
Each plate was angled to deflect attacks, leaving no flat surface for an enemy to strike.
The workers of the Fourth Stratum rose to their feet.
Along the terraces, hundreds of hounds sat down at the same time. Their pale electricity flashed once, matching the steady pulse of the furnace inside the new iron body.
In that moment, control of the Fourth Stratum passed to its new master. A wave of light spread across the basin.

[Sentience: confirmed. Vocal apparatus: absent. Communication: percussive.]
[Translation services: available.]
The visor turned toward Joel. The giant lowered its head in a bow.
Then the first words came from its iron chest. The newest member of Joel’s army was ready to speak.
THMMM. THMM.
[Vanguard communication: translating.]
[Translation: ’The forge reports for duty.’]
[Translation accuracy: 96%. Nuance: contentment.]
Joel stood before his second general, surrounded by heat and light.
The hammer strikes had been the creature’s voice all along. Joel had heard it speaking even before it had a body.
This creature did not speak in words or sentences.
It spoke through the sound of its hammer strikes.
"On Earth," Joel said loudly over the dying fire, "there were old stories about a smith who worked beneath a mountain. He made weapons for the gods. Whenever he worked, the whole mountain shook with the sound of his hammer. People believed he was the reason volcanoes erupted."
Joel looked up at the golden light behind the creature’s visor.
"Your name will be Vulcan."
The furnace behind its chest grew brighter, and Joel felt its reply through the ground before he heard it.
THMM-THMM... THMM.
[Translation: ’The forge accepts the name. The forge accepts the master.’]
[Translation accuracy: 99%. Nuance: joy, filed quietly.]
•••
The test was requested with two strokes and granted with one gesture, because Joel believed in quality control.
Vulcan turned toward an empty ridge at the basin’s rim, and the armored petals of the right cannon irised open with a sound like a vault, and the charge-up ran through the iron country like a rising tide, VMMMMMMM, and the discharge, when it came, was not entirely a sound.
DOOOM.
The kinetic slug crossed the basin in a flat white line, and the ridge it struck did not shatter so much as resign, a hundred meters of slag architecture folding inward and outward at once and then hanging in the air briefly as a sculpture of its own demolition before gravity remembered its duties. The echo rolled around the crater walls for the better part of a minute, and the hound files along the terraces sat through the entire performance without one flicker of discharge, in the silence of an audience that had fully understood the management briefing.
[Ding!]
[Hammerfall Cannons: test discharge logged. Yield: a ridge, deceased.]
[System Note: the house now owns artillery. The house requests that somebody mildly inconvenience it, at their earliest convenience.]
"He is loud," observed a voice like silk drawn over a blade, and Nyx stepped out of the shadow of the great buried hammer, folding her blades as she came, and she walked a slow circle around her new colleague with the unhurried audit of a founding employee reviewing a hire. "The dark was mine alone, Architect, and I had grown accustomed to the quiet."
"You will adjust," Joel said. "You are now senior management, and this is your first subordinate, and I expect the two of you to coordinate."
Vulcan’s visor tilted toward the shadow-assassin, and the chest answered her, courteous and grave.
THMMM.
[Translation: ’The Arsenal greets the Blade.’]
Nyx regarded him for a long moment, and then the vestigial crown above her violet eyes flickered once, which Joel had learned to file under many things but never once under displeasure.
"He will do," she announced. "He keeps time."

The Army of the House now comprises a shadow that cannot be seen and a fortress that cannot be moved. The house observes that history has had entire successful empires built on less.
[====================================]
They walked out of the iron country together as the basin cooled behind them, and the portal seam of pale light stood waiting at the stratum’s rim, and Joel paused at it with the aches of the week singing in chorus and his whole account in order.
Behind him, four meters of fortress folded itself into his shadow and became a weight like a held breath. Ahead, through the seam, waited the floating city, the Academy, the Merit boards, and one storm-brat with a gauntlet and an opinion, currently writing a formal challenge that a Level 1 Flesh-Guide from the Iron tier would have no possible reason to fear.
"Vulcan," Joel said, stepping into the light. "Mind the dark on the way in. We are going to go and negotiate with some weather."
THMMM, the dark agreed.
