Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Bastion of Kinetics

"The best defense is a good offense." — military proverb

---

The canyon stayed dark all night. Joel spent the first part of it doing what he always did after a long shift.

Joel sat with his back against the rust wall, his forearms resting on his knees. The wounds from the day itched as they finished healing.

Nyx stood guard at the canyon entrance, her blades folded. Her two-and-a-half-meter figure stood against the orange glow of the northern furnaces as she patiently studied the wasteland.

The system added the day’s two points without comment, bringing his total to eleven. Eleven was a fortune.

"Here’s what I learned today," Joel said, reviewing the fight like an incident report.

"First, my weapon is a problem in this stratum. The magnetic fields bend it, and the wind covers it in metal. I had to fight with my bare hands.

"Second, the Frame has a limit. The Packmaster’s shoulder proved that. Enough weight moving fast enough can hurt me, even when its attack doesn’t cut.

"Third, and this is the costly part, I can only use my Charge through one weapon at a time. One swing, one direction, one target.

"I’m like a vault with only one teller’s window. Yesterday, magnetism kept that window shut all day. My power sat unused while the Wastes collected their payment from my arms."

He turned his hands over in the dark and flexed his fingers. Then the answer came to him, just as his best ideas always did.

’I don’t need another weapon, he thought. The weapon already exists. It’s me. I’ve been building it since the vestibule cracked under the weight of what the Wheel made me.

What I need is a way to fight.

A fortress that only absorbs damage is just a tomb with good posture. But a fortress that absorbs attacks and strikes back becomes a force to be feared. The difference isn’t the stone. It’s the training.’

And the drill was on sale, and it had been on sale since the first club rang off his forearm in an Induction Hall a month and two lives ago.

[Ding!]

[Fundamental skill registered: ’Block’ (Common) - Lv. 1.]

[Applications logged to date: 214. Installed retroactively.]

[The system thanks the host for his patronage, which has apparently been ongoing and unpaid for some time.]

He went over the numbers one more time, just as he always did before a major purchase. The answer was the same as before, only in different words.

A Body Evolution might help him deal with electricity. But it would take time, and the results were uncertain. Gambling his emergency funds on a random genetic upgrade was a poor investment.

He didn’t need a stronger defense right now. His body could already withstand most attacks, as the cuts from that day had proved. What he needed was a way to strike back.

His calculations showed that the wall needed to fight back.

"Two points on the spin," Joel decided. "The higher the wager, the better the possible reward. I’m buying a fighting method."

He would keep the rest in reserve.

He pushed two points across the felt.

[Ding!]

[Fate Points Wagered: 2. The Wheel of Fate spins...]

Click... click... click... click... clack.

[Result: x15,000 Multiplier Achieved.]

The number glowed in the dark canyon. Its multiplier was three times the one that had created Meteor Piercer.

Joel stared at it like a surgeon looking at a scalpel handed to him by a friend.

[Ding!]

[Multiplier x15,000 Locked.]

[Please select an application for Fate Energy:]

[A) Skill Proficiency - (Apply to a known skill or unlearned Skill Book)]

[B) Cellular Regeneration - (Apply to physical trauma for instant/sustained healing)]

[C) Body Evolution - (Apply to genetic structure for permanent stat/trait mutation)]

[Awaiting User Input...]

’A,’ Joel answered. ’Target: Block.’

[Selection A Confirmed: Skill Proficiency.]

[Target: ’Block’ (Common) - Lv. 1.]

[Applying x15,000 Proficiency...]

The skill arrived as a weight, because learning to stand your ground and survive was the hardest lesson of all.

The first thousand repetitions corrected his guard like a sergeant training a recruit: elbow down, wrist high, chin tucked behind an invisible shield.

The next ten thousand taught his whole body to become that shield. He drilled rooted stances and angled deflections until the movements settled into his hips and heels.

Then the overflow arrived, and the overflow recognized a relative.

[Ding!]

[’Block’ has reached MAX Level.]

[Proficiency overflow detected. Skill is mutating...]

[Resonance detected: class trait ’Aegis Frame’ (Passive).]

[Fusing host skill ’Block’ with class architecture...]

[Ding! Skill Mutated!]

[You have learned: ’Kinetic Bastion’ (Epic).]

[Kinetic Bastion (Epic) - Lv. 1: the host’s defensive architecture, weaponized.]

[• Bastion Stance: active. Raises the Frame’s absorption ceiling by an order of magnitude, and converts a portion of hybrid shear-force into absorbable impact.]

[• Bastion Release: at will, discharge the entire stored Charge as an omnidirectional shockwave barrier. Yield and radius scale with Charge held.]

[Cost: none to hold the stance. Release empties the reservoir.]

[An empty reservoir refills the honest way, by being struck.]

[Limitation: elemental force (electrical, thermal, erosive) remains outside Frame jurisdiction.]

Joel sat in the quiet darkness and read the limitation twice. The system had never lied to him.

Victor Kole’s gauntlet could still burn him, and the furnaces in the deep country could still cook him. He hadn’t conquered the Wastes tonight. He had only made his presence known. ℴℴ𝘮

"So the lightning problem remains," he noted, calm and unmoved. "But every club, claw, wall, landslide, and stampede in this tower now feeds a cannon that fires in every direction at once. It doesn’t solve all my problems. It just makes my enemies pay for every hit."

•••

The test began at first light. Nyx carried it out with the enthusiasm of an employee told to attack her own boss.

"Strike my guard," Joel said. He stood on the sandy floor of the canyon, feet planted and forearm raised. "Use your full strength. Strike with the blade’s edge. Don’t hold back."

"Architect," Nyx replied, sounding almost delighted.

One of the four blades on her back moved into position. She swung it down at his raised arm so fast that his eyes barely had time to follow.

SHNKKK.

The blade struck his arm with full force. Part of the impact passed into the Frame, leaving only the cutting force to reach his skin. The blade slid down his forearm, leaving a shallow cut that began to close almost as soon as it appeared.

That tiny difference was what separated yesterday from this morning.

"Harder," Joel said.

Nyx obeyed. She struck four times in quick succession.

SHNK. SHNK. SHNK. SHNK.

Each blow landed on his guard, and the Frame absorbed the force. The stored energy kept building, like water filling a bell, until the meter crossed the limit.

Joel Carrow released it all at once.

KRA-BOOOOM.

The canyon answered.

The shockwave burst out of Joel in every direction. The canyon walls bent outward from the force, and the ground within ten meters rose in a wave of sand, grit, and torn metal plates.

At the canyon’s mouth, an entire dune lifted into the air, turning into a storm of dust and debris.

Nyx rode the wave at its front, her blades spread like the figurehead of a ship. Somewhere inside the cloud of dust, Joel heard her laugh.

•••

The audience arrived in the middle of the morning. The noise from the night before had travelled up the chain, just like everything else in the Wastes.

Eight Ferro-Hounds came over the ridge in a crescent, ready to hunt.

Joel walked into the open rust with his feet planted and his hands behind his back, like a man waiting for a carriage.

He let the entire pack reach him at once.

The eight hounds crashed into him like a ship hitting land.

DOOM!

Their combined weight slammed into Joel, but his Frame absorbed the impact and demanded more.

The hounds bit down on his arms, but Joel didn’t move. His body stood firm, and the Frame absorbed their attacks with ease. After yesterday’s upgrade, it could now handle far more damage than before.

"Thank you all for coming," Joel said from the middle of the pile. "Your contributions have been recorded. Now, the house will pay you back in person."

He released the stored force.

KRA-BOOOOM.

All eight hounds flew away from him at once, like metal scraps thrown back by a reversed magnet. They landed across forty meters of rust, each impact shaking the ground.

DOOM. DOOM. DOOM.

Joel walked around the scattered hounds, calmly finishing the job with his boots.

As the dust settled, the only sound left was the steady ticking of metal shrapnel against the ground, as if the rain itself were applauding.

[Ding!]

[Ferro-Hound (Lv. 26-27) x8 eliminated.]

[Kinetic Bastion: released (full reservoir). Reservoir: empty.]

[Massive EXP gained.]

[Level Up! You are now Level 29.]

[Lethal engagement survived (massed hostile charge). The Wheel acknowledges your gamble.]

[+1 Fate Point Earned. Current Balance: 10.]

[=================================]

They left the canyon at noon and stopped at its northern edge. Beyond it, the rust country sloped down into a deep basin.

An orange glow hung over the land like a second sunset that had arrived too early. The air rising from the basin smelled of old fire.

"The howling has stopped, Architect," Nyx said, watching the horizon beside him. "Nothing in this country is making a sound anymore. In a land full of hounds, silence means their master has heard the news."

"Yes," Joel replied. He settled the halberd across his back and studied the glow like a shopper looking at a bright storefront. "All the trails lead there. The heat comes from there, and something in that basin runs the furnaces that built every hound in this stratum."

He smiled faintly. "That’s where I’ll find my artillery. And I came here to buy the biggest piece they have."

Then Joel spoke to the distant fire and the endless iron.

"Let’s go discuss the purchase."
