Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Shattering the Illusion

"Beware the fury of a patient man." — John Dryden

---

The clearing sat in the last green light of the day.

Joel Carrow stepped into it from the dark tree line, hood down and hands empty.

The jungle was quiet.

Chloe saw him first. Her hand rose halfway toward a spell her caution refused to cast.

Then it froze.

The boy walking toward them was not limping.

Vance turned at the sound of her breath.

Joel watched the color leave the golden face in the same familiar stages.

"You."

Vance drew his sword. It ignited as it cleared the sheath.

FWOOSH

A length of translucent crimson flame that threw red light across the clearing.

The hanging dusk turned the color of a wound.

"It was you. Belman, Garrick, and Merrick, hung up like... like..."

"Display," Joel finished pleasantly. "Yes. I think that’s the only word that fits.

"They’re alive, by the way. All four of them. They qualified for the academy, and they’re in much better condition than your usual list of clients.

"Consider it my version of mercy.

"And think carefully about what that says about the company you’ve been keeping."

"You are NOTHING," Vance shouted, his voice rising and cracking on the second word.

"You’re an F-rank! You dodged a pig! I watched you dodge a pig, and now you’re standing there talking about mercy in MY jungle, after touching my friends..."

"It’s not your jungle," Joel said. "Which brings us to the interesting part of this conversation. So let’s skip to it."

He tilted his head.

His voice grew quieter, and somehow, the quiet was worse than the shouting.

"The velvet case, Aldrich. The one you’ve checked four times in the last hour and are touching right now.

"Open it."

Vance’s hand froze on his kit strap.

Chloe’s eyes moved from the kit to Joel’s face with the quick, flat look of a woman completing an audit.

"You know about the needle," she said.

"I know everything," Joel agreed, without looking away from Vance.

"I knows about the cellar, the Mayor’s little gift, and the tired Warden’s transcription.

"And i knows about the tonic, Chloe. All of it.

"I’ve known about the tonic since the second night in that house. Your hands were steady, but you never let that glass leave your sight."

He let the words sink in and watched the effect they had on both of them.

"I’ve known everything. Every day.

"I paid rent for my silence to a man with four rings. I let this city laugh at a pig.

"And tonight, only because you brought the needle into my jungle, the rules change."

The kit flap came open. The velvet case shook in Vance’s fist like something alive and afraid.

"A Severance Needle," Vance said.

He was clawing his way back into the performance, the golden confidence slowly returning as the panic faded.

It was the only thing he had ever known how to build.

"Inner City contrabard, crystallizes a mana core in an afternoon, reads as exhaustion. You know what that means, Joel? It means I don’t have to beat you.

It means a corpse with fatigue’s face goes home in a drone, and the golden boy comforts the city, and no one ever asks."

He thumbed the case open, and the sliver of grey metal lay along his palm, hair-fine and hungry. "The Mayor sent me to close the account. Turns out he needn’t have bothered paying so much."

"Then close it," Joel said. "I brought my own instrument."

He raised his left hand, and showed them the matte black cuff on his wrist.

The clearing had gone so quiet that the click of the Null-Band’s seal opening carried like a hammer on stone.

"Do you know the worst part of being dead, Aldrich?" Joel asked casually as he slid the band off his wrist.

"It’s the wardrobe. You spend your whole death wearing other people’s clothes."

The cuff hit the grass.

•••

The clearing detonated downward.

VMMMMMMMM.

It was not light or sound, yet somehow it was both.

A pressure rolled off the boy in the grey coat, like deep water rising through a sinking ship.

The entire green room of the jungle seemed to bow beneath it.

The grass flattened outward in a perfect ring.

Dust rose from the ground in a low haze.

Above them, the canopy shook, sending dry leaves raining down from every branch at once.

The earth itself seemed to notice. Thin cracks crawled through the drying mud, spreading in a slow circle around Joel’s boots.

The black water of the river bend went flat and still, pressed down by the weight of the air above it.

[Ding!]

Chloe sat down.

It was not really a decision. Her knees simply gave out under the pressure her B-rank senses were correctly warning her about.

She stared up at the F-rank from the grass, her face pale and her eyes wide.

She made no sound at all.

Vance made a sound. The crimson blade flickered in his grip.

The A-rank flame bent sideways like a candle in the wind, reacting to the pressure just like everything else with energy.

The instinct Aethelgard had valued so highly screamed one clear message through his mind.

Run.

He looked at the Joel standing in the clearing, a plain seventeen-year-old carrying enough pressure to bend the trees.

Something deep inside him finally understood.

He had been standing in a cage with something dangerous for two years.

And that thing had finally chosen its moment.

The cage was the jungle and the door had just closed.

"That’s not possible," he whispered. "You were grey. You were NOTHING, the Tear said..."

"The Tear read a poisoned body," Joel said. "Your poison, Aldrich. Your girl’s steady hands. You spent two months sabotaging the reading of your rival’s soul, and the joke of it is that the sabotage was the only reason nobody ever looked at me twice."

He rolled his shoulders.

The pressure moved with him, and somewhere behind him, a dead branch finally gave up and crashed through the canopy with a sharp KRAK.

"But you brought a needle into a stratum full of my witnesses.

"The Mayor’s money has bought me twice.

"And I’ve decided to stop discounting myself."

Vance ran the numbers like a drowning man.

Then he did the only thing his fear knew how to do.

He charged.

•••

The frenzy was honest at least, and it was fast.

He came in with a full mana flare, his blade burning bright crimson against the dark pressure.

His first strike came down diagonally, aimed from Joel’s shoulder to his hip.

Joel swayed just a hand’s width and let the blade pass.

It struck the ground behind him, cutting the grass clean down to the soil in a two-meter line.

The second came backhand before the first finished.

SHNK

The second strike cut through the space where Joel’s head had been a heartbeat earlier.

The third was a lunge.

The needle was held low in Vance’s other fist, reversed along his forearm.

Joel watched the sliver of grey metal coming straight for his heart.

Then he made his decision.

It was the same decision he had made in every negotiation across his two lives.

He stopped retreating.

He took hold of his own coat and tore it open, baring his chest to the strike, and he spread his arms.

Vance saw the opening an eighth of a second before he took it, and the terror and the training took it together, and he put his whole A-rank soul into the thrust, every point of mana affinity, every hour of the academy’s drilling, the blade driving for the bare sternum with a sound like tearing silk, and the needle riding behind it in the same fist, and the clearing held its breath around the two of them.

KRA-KOOM.

The impact landed, and the impact stopped.

It stopped like a river hitting a dam.

All that crimson force reached the skin of Joel’s chest and simply stopped.

The blade rested against his bare sternum, its red light bending and shaking before flowing into him.

Joel felt the energy arrive.

He felt the Aegis Frame accept it.

The kinetic and spatial force of an A-rank strike poured into him like water into sand.

The heat settled into his bones with the quiet comfort of a deposit being counted.

[Ding!]

[Aegis Frame: incoming kinetic and spatial force absorbed. 4,300 units. Host damage: 0.]

[Charge stored: 4,300 units.]

The crimson blade died in Vance’s hands.

The flame went out between one heartbeat and the next.

The light drained from the blade and flowed into the boy it had been aimed at.

Aldrich Vance stood in the green darkness, holding a dead length of steel against the unmarked chest of the boy he had poisoned.

His hand slowly opened.

The Severance Needle slipped from his fingers and fell into the grass without a sound.

"You felt that, I hope," Joel said, into the silence, and his voice never rose at all. "Every point of it. Because I felt your tonic every night for two months, Aldrich, and I have been saving up."

Behind him, at the clearing’s edge, the shadow beneath a dead fig tree deepened with a sound like silk unfolding, and Nyx stepped out of it, blade by blade, into the last light.

"The clearing is yours, Architect," she said.

"Now then," Joel Carrow said, and the cold smile arrived at last, slow and total. "Let us discuss the tonic."
