SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System
Chapter 33: Consuming the Ransom
Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Consuming the Ransom
The dead drop at the drowned shrine went exactly as designed, which was to say that nothing happened at all.
Pell arrived alone at dusk with a porters’ handcart, set the strongbox down inside the shrine’s broken walls, and walked away without once looking at the structure, which was a professional performing a professional delivery.
He did not see the shadow peel from the archway behind him, and he did not see the boy who materialized out of the dark a moment later, because the transaction had been engineered to have no witnesses.
Joel took the strongbox out through the aqueduct’s dead channels and up to the Rustward safehouse by routes he had walked and mapped for a week, and the only official record of the evening anywhere in Caelmont was a tired Warden’s transcription that said a retrieval beacon had been recovered at insertion.
Back in the garret, with the shutters sealed and Nyx standing sentry in the corner shadow, Joel broke the seals.

[System note: the house has filed this under ’income’.]
The twelve cores sat in their packing straw like unexploded ordnance, dense and dark and humming faintly against the table, and beside them lay the manuals, four of them, bound in restricted-shelf blue: movement and perception disciplines, Academy editions.
’Twelve Tier-3 cores,’ Joel thought, ’The city pays for them as tribute. Sterling takes his share as dead stock. I take them as rent.
So, this week alone, the cores have had three owners without ever legally belonging to any of them.’
He read the Manual first.
He absorbed the movement disciplines the way he had absorbed the grey pamphlet, and the learning was quiet and clean, a week of careful study compressed into an evening of pages going warm under his hands.
The texts described the mechanics of footwork in the language of physics rather than art, which was the language his mind already spoke, and the perception disciplines arrived as a set of focusing drills that could be drilled standing in one room.
He practiced the basics until the small hours, ghosting between the chalk marks he had drawn on the garret floor, and then he slept four hours, and rose, and ate, and did what he had come to do, because a professional does not mix inventory with appetite.
The plan for the cores had taken two days to prepare.
It was simple and precise.
He kept two cores in reserve, wrapped in oilcloth for future emergencies.
The other ten were laid out neatly on the table, like medicine waiting to be measured.
He planned to take all ten at once, under supervision and in a controlled setting, exactly as he would have advised any patient reckless enough to try it.
’The manual’s absorption ceiling for my grade is one core per week,’ he thought, setting the first core into the cradle of his palms.
’And the ceiling exists because a mana core ruptures at overload, and rupture is fatal, and fatality is the end of the account. But the account has a standing clause the manual does not know about, and the clause is called Juggernaut Vitality, and rupture is merely another wound, and my wounds are administrative.’
He called Nyx to witness, set the second core aside as the emergency dose, and began.
•••
The first core went down like a swallowed star, and it burned all the way.
The energy came apart in his chest into a white flood that ran outward through channels he had never felt before. He felt the first seam strain before the core was half spent, and he marked it clinically, the way he had once marked the first tremor of an arrhythmia, and he kept going, because the dosage schedule had been drafted with exactly this margin in mind.
The second core tore something open, and the regeneration closed it behind the flood like a maintenance crew working behind a runaway train.
[Juggernaut Vitality] had no opinion about the pain, because it was not pain medicine, it was repair, and the repair ran continuously, sealing mana-veins as they split, rebuilding them slightly denser as they healed, so that his channel network was being torn and reissued in real time, and each reissue carried a little more.

By the fourth core the process had found its rhythm, and so had the Wheel.

’Of course it does,’ Joel thought, riding the white flood with his teeth set, the amusement arriving somewhere underneath the agony like a cold spring under ice.
’The house pays me to poison myself now. There is a very specific job title for this, and I have held it before, and it did not pay benefits.’
The fifth and sixth cores went down together, and the rupture rate climbed past the regeneration’s comfort margin for the first time, and Nyx stepped out of the shadow and set one hand flat on his shoulder, not because he needed steadying, but because the dark had begun to pool around his feet on its own, reacting to the density of what was being built inside him, and her touch gave the excess somewhere to go.
The seventh core stopped burning and started singing, a single held note in the marrow, in the exact harmonic family as the Spire’s own deep voice, and the veins in his forearms stood up under the skin like cables, dark with the passage of the light.

[System Note: the house is being renovated from the inside.]
The eighth, ninth, and tenth cores were conquest.
He took them deliberately, one after another.
Each core entered a body that had already been rebuilt to hold it.
The last core settled into a chest that was no longer Level 1 anything.
His channels were no longer just pathways for energy. They had become something larger.
They had become architecture.
And deep inside that architecture, something had begun to hum.
When the tenth core settled, Joel sat in the garret chair with steam rising from his shoulders in the cold room.
The lamp flickered in a wind that was not weather.
Then the flood stopped.
What remained was a silence that felt built into the room itself.

He spent one point before the sweat on his brow had finished drying, because the payment schedule of the Wheel demanded the same ethics he had demanded of Sterling.

Joel stood, and tested it, and the test was the strangest silence he had ever heard.
He walked across the garret.
The floorboards made no sound. Not a creak. Not a shift. Nothing.
When he moved faster, the room seemed to let him leave a man-shaped blur behind him, an afterimage that stayed for half a second after he was gone.
It was the movement of something that hunted in the dark, beside something that was made of darkness.
Together, they were about to enter a jungle that had been told by its owner that no witnesses were left.
"The trials begin tomorrow, Architect," Nyx said from the corner, and there was silk-wrapped anticipation in it.
"Yes," Joel said, looking at his silent boots in the lamplight, flexing his hands around the new hum in them.
