SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 27: The Red Bunker
Mechanical locking bolts hummed inside the dark walls of the decommissioned facility, sealing the exit hatch from the outside with sudden finality.
Fin held his hatchet and twin dark daggers in his open palms, staring up at the reinforced locking mechanism with quiet calculation.
"They really sealed the hatch from the outside," he muttered quietly, testing the reinforced latch with the blunt reverse of his weapon.
’Gage thinks a locked basement is enough to bury an independent E+ hunter,’ he thought, stepping along the downward slope with steady deliberate footwork.
The corridor descended toward the holding chambers beneath rotating strobes from the containment grid.
"Ten minutes of oxygen before the scrubber filters choke on dust," he noted, checking the digital timer blinking on his wrist display.
Footsteps shook the floor ahead, announcing the first wave of automated sentinels.
"Rusted scrap metal makes far too much racket on shift," he whispered, rolling his shoulders while feeling his augmented tendons tighten for action.
The golems stood three paces tall, turning their weapon mounts toward the intruder on the walkway.
"Hah! You brought garden shears to an execution, rat!" an automated speaker crackled through the lead golem, mocking him with pre-recorded corporate contempt.
’That voice belongs to an operator sitting three kilometers away in a warm office,’ he thought, flicking his daggers into reverse grip.
He engaged Overclock, feeling forty stamina drain away as the burst tightened his muscles.
[ Active skill: Overclock initiated ]
[ Stamina: 100 → 60/100 ]
[ Agility: 58 → 174 (temporary surge) ]
’Twelve seconds on the clock,’ he thought, watching the world freeze into a crisp still frame of suspended dust motes around his sneakers.
He crossed thirty paces in three strides, ducking beneath the sweep of a pneumatic crusher.
"Agh!" the automated voice distorted through the speaker grill as his hatchet bit through the knee actuator, severing pressurized fluid lines instantly.
The machine fell against its companion, exposing the chest vent above its collar. He stowed the hatchet, driving both daggers through the opening before the pair recovered.
"One down, nine standing on the clock," he counted softly, pulling his twin blades from the smoking chassis before the carcass hit floor.
He stored the daggers, drawing his hatchet before burying its reverse spike in the second machine’s skull.
’This brawl is just another packing line that needs clearing before dinner,’ he thought, keeping his breathing steady through clenched back teeth.
Shrapnel struck his cheeks as wall guns opened fire, testing his skin trait against the flying fragments.
"That burst barely scratches the paint," he grunted in defiance, shaking dark soot from his knuckles while stepping past a broken pipe.
Coolant sprayed his forearms, stinging before he wiped it away with his sleeve. His blood trait offered no protection against chemicals burning outside his body.
’Jolly would deduct points from my chore ledger for staining these clothes,’ he thought, ducking beneath a sweeping motorized claw with fluid balance.
Ten sentinels collapsed across the central processing floor, their broken limbs smoking as their extinguished optical lights faded into the quiet dark.
[ Mutated golem kills: +9,000 EXP ]
[ EXP: 42,500 / 50,500 ]
"Nine thousand experience points on the voucher," he noted, staring at the golden ledger climbing toward the long fifty-thousand threshold without smiling.
’Eight thousand more points and this ridiculous gate finally pays its tuition,’ he thought, rolling his wrists to shake out accumulated muscle tension.
The passage ended above the reactor well, where purple distortion rippled across the pit.
The master construct waited below, its Named title flickering above the exposed reactor well.
"ROAR!" the core master bellowed through synthetic acoustic sirens, swinging a pneumatic battering ram toward the elevated catwalk supports above the pit.
"You have terrible breath for an officer," he muttered dryly, leaping from the buckled railing as the gantry collapsed beneath concussive acoustic shockwaves.
[ Overclock ended: stamina 60/100 ]
[ Overclock initiated: stamina 60 → 20/100 ]
He engaged Overclock during his descent, aligning his feet above the juggernaut’s exposed core.
"Take your hands off my city!" he shouted, driving the reverse spike of his hatchet through the creature’s reinforced collar armor with force.
Both matte-black daggers flashed in rapid succession, plunging into the pulsing chest light until the internal wiring burst in bright white sparks.
"Agh... release the chassis, biological parasite!" the synthetic vocal box screamed, thrashing its broad shoulders against the rough perimeter foundation wall frantically.
’You are not shaking me off this frame,’ he thought, reversing the hatchet to bring the blunt poll crashing down upon the crystal lattice.
The blow shattered the mana core, scattering fragments across the floor beneath him.
"Hah... shift complete," he breathed, riding the falling titan downward as its chest struck the floor plates in a cloud of grey ash.
[ Named core master smashed ]
[ EXP reward: +8,000 EXP ]
[ Trait absorbed: strength +6 (golem density) ]
[ EXP: 50,500 / 50,500 ]
A bell sounded inside his skull, announcing the barrier’s collapse after weeks of work.
’Fifty thousand five hundred points on the dot, no corporate discounts needed,’ he thought, feeling his bone density thicken with a sudden rush of warmth.
Light crossed his vision, forming a system prompt without its usual trace of mockery.
[ Rank advancement available: E+ → D ]
"Not down here in the dark," he whispered aloud, dismissing the glowing promotion dialogue with a single calm blink of his weary eyes.
’A promotion accepted inside a locked tomb is how arrogant amateurs get themselves trapped,’ he thought, climbing the maintenance ladder toward the quiet upper tunnel.
The thick barrier plates never possessed permission to unlock from inside, designed instead to seal contaminated free agents in permanent civic isolation.
Yet as he reached the threshold, the hydraulic locking pins retracted with a sudden hiss of high-pressure air that shook the frame.
"Hah? The door is opening on its own?" he muttered, resting one hand against his daggers while stepping into the widening opening.
The blast doors opened along their tracks, admitting twilight air scented with pine.
High-frequency sirens rolled across the distant mountains, their synchronized warbling drowning out the quiet murmur of the evening wind through the trees.
"Attention all citizens, defensive readiness state one is now declared," automated sky speakers echoed, repeating the emergency message across every lower district boulevard.
’The siren cadence changed from routine drill to emergency evacuation,’ he noted, stepping across the threshold onto the gravel road outside the gate.
The projected arrival countdown for the Pacific disaster gate unexpectedly dropped from eighteen months to six months in a single chaotic hour.
His interface intercepted a bunker telemetry packet, displaying an ocean reading beside the public warning.
The packet carried a Genesis designation unavailable on the municipal broadcast.
[ Warning: global gate compression detected ]
[ Pacific SS-rank threshold: 18 months → 6 months ]
[ Bio-telemetry link: subject one confirmed ]
"Subject One... who authorized another monster in the ocean?" he muttered, looking up at the sky beyond the reactor smoke.
He checked the road behind him before sending Ruby his location and the bunker warning.
"Out," he recorded into the phone. "The order was a trap. Keep the altered dispatch I sent you."
’Evidence first. Then water. Then I explain why another set of clothes looks like a factory accident.’
He reduced his pace when his legs began trembling beneath him.
Fin stepped out through the open bunker maw, his torn porter clothes coated in thick layers of gray dust and synthetic oil.
’Jolly is already at the kitchen window counting emergency sirens,’ he thought, breaking into an easy jogging pace along the quiet forest road.
