Fin kept his palms flat against his thighs, watching the flaming blade shudder as the kite shield absorbed the impact.

The six Pyre Syndicate hunters tightened their perimeter across the mud, raising their weapons as if the outcome was decided.

Bram raised both hands into the air, stepping back from the cordon line with the nervous hesitation of an unlicensed veteran.

Corin clutched his scorched staff with trembling knuckles, knowing that a single spark spell posed zero threat to a sponsored B-rank captain.

He refrained from drawing his twin daggers, counting the legal distance between an armed threat and an actionable assault under municipal codes.

Ruby planted her feet into the swamp ground, holding the kite shield between them with the practiced balance of an outbreak specialist.

Her white jacket bore the Vega-6 radio tag on the collar, buzzing softly with emergency channel chatter from the central district.

"Stand down, Captain Gage," she ordered, keeping her sharp eyes fixed on his drawn broadsword without sparing a glance behind her.

"This salvage dispute falls under municipal jurisdiction, and your broadcast drones are recording an unprovoked attack on a registered free agent," she added.

"This lower-city scavenger stole a corporate core," Gage snarled, lowering his blazing tip while the flame earring flickered against his cheek.

"The free agent claimed an abandoned target under open-season rules," she replied flatly, tightening her grip on the reinforced strap.

A distant rhythmic thrumming echoed from the clouds above, drowning out the shouting mercenaries with the steady beat of spinning rotor blades.

An Association transport descended through the coastal fog, hovering fifty meters above the extraction pad without deploying its landing gear.

A bright scarlet S-banner was painted across the underbelly of the aircraft, casting a wide shadow over the stagnant water.

The automated ticker on the perimeter screens refreshed instantly, announcing an unscheduled inspection flight by regional observers from the capital.

The atmospheric pressure plummeted across the entire swamp, dropping like a crushing ceiling that pushed the breath from every throat below.

The S-rank aura descended not as a polite suggestion of power, functioning instead as a terrifying biological statement of divine dominion.

Every D-rank hunter on the extraction pad collapsed toward the mud, their trembling knees folding beneath the oppressive weight of the air.

Bram struck the ground on both knees, burying the rim of his dented shield into the muck to keep from falling flat.

Jax and Corin dropped beside the supply crates, gasping for shallow breaths as their foreheads pressed against the gravel.

The six Pyre mercenaries sank onto their shins, their weapons splashing into the red water as their heads bowed in silence.

Even Gage buckled under the suffocating pressure, dropping onto one knee while driving his broadsword into the mud for balance.

The fire along the captain’s blade sputtered out instantly, extinguished by the overwhelming presence radiating from the hovering transport above.

Ruby dropped behind her planted shield, its rim supporting her as her knees struck the mud.

C-rank was a different species from the lower tiers, yet even her seasoned frame bent against the crushing atmospheric tide.

Fin stood upright in the center of the kneeling crowd, feeling the invisible pressure glance harmlessly off his shoulders.

His internal Pulse stat hummed at eight points, creating an invisible seam in the weather that diverted the crushing gravity around him.

To every camera drone hovering overhead, he simply looked like a bewildered porter too ignorant to understand when he should drop.

He kept his gaze lowered toward the murky water, deliberately avoiding looking directly at the darkened observation windows of the aircraft.

The transport hovered above the swamp without lowering a ramp, measuring the sector’s compliance from the air.

The thrum of the engines began to shift, angling the nose of the transport toward the northern horizon as the inspection ended.

The pressure lifted from the mudflats, allowing the hunters to breathe and Ruby to rise beside her shield.

Ruby reached out with her free hand, clamping her fingers around his jacket collar with enough force to snap the stitching.

She dragged him off the extraction pad, hauling his frame behind a row of shipping containers before anyone could take another breath.

"Are you trying to get yourself dissected in a government laboratory?" she hissed, shoving him back against the dull siding.

Her breath came in ragged bursts, her sharp eyes darting toward the open sky where the transport was dwindling into a speck.

"I was standing where the Association told me to stand," he answered calmly, adjusting his collar where her knuckles twisted.

"You stood upright in S-rank atmospheric pressure while sponsored captains were chewing dirt," she whispered, her voice trembling with restrained panic.

"Maybe the wind was blowing the other direction," he offered with a dry shrug, keeping his hands relaxed inside his pockets.

"The high council pulled your delayed-awakening file again this morning," she revealed, tapping the Vega-6 emblem pinned to her chest.

"The auditors are sniffing around the missing hospital intake logs, asking why an unsponsored packer keeps surfacing beside fractured gates," she added.

"Then we stop taking contracts that feature news drones and corporate vanguards," he said, meeting her anxious gaze with steady resolve.

"Footage is not the primary issue right now," she countered, pointing an index finger directly toward his unbothered chest.

"You standing upright in that air is the problem, because people who do not kneel get put down by force," she warned.

"I did not ask the aircraft to fly over our sector," he replied, watching her trembling fingers smooth the wrinkles on her jacket.

"Then learn how to fake being weak," she demanded, checking the corner of the container to ensure no mercenaries followed them.

"Next time a sponsored banner enters the sky, you drop into the muck like everyone else, or I will trip you myself," she added.

"I can manage a clumsy stumble when the cameras are watching," he promised, offering a faint smile that failed to ease her worry.

She let out a long breath, resting the edge of her shield against the container wall while closing her exhausted eyes.

"The Iron Dogs are waiting at the decontamination checkpoint," she said softly, gesturing toward the floodlit gates across the road.

"Take your bounty voucher, cash the credits at an automated terminal, and go home to your sister before more trouble finds you," she instructed.

"What about Gage?" he asked, glancing back toward the extraction pad where the Pyre hunters were gathering their scattered gear.

"Gage has a bruised ego and a damaged blade," she muttered, adjusting the strap of her shield with quick, professional motions.

"He will complain to his patron, but corporate syndicates rarely launch formal inquiries over low-tier swamp kills," she explained.

He nodded once, slipping out from behind the container to rejoin the Iron Dogs near the municipal decontamination showers.

Bram slapped his shoulder with a muddy hand, babbling about divine interventions while Jax and Corin washed the sulfur from their faces.

Across the mudflats, the S-banner transport ascended into the gray clouds, disappearing toward the upper districts without touching the ground once.

Thirty hunters left knee prints in the mud, marking where Fin finally remembered to breathe.
