SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 118: Sub-Level Five: The Prototype Tomb
Dawn broke cold across the river district as salt mist drifted through the empty drainage culverts of Conduit Nine.
Fin stepped onto the slick catwalk, adjusting the leather straps of his hatchet while Ruby tightened her tower shield harness beside him.
"The air down here tastes like cold lime and stagnant river mud." Ruby wrinkled her nose, keeping her spear point angled toward the long corridor. "Let us finish our business before the morning tide rises."
"Sensors show the secondary drainage sump dropped four feet after we diverted the dam siphon yesterday." Maya tapped the portable display strapped to her left forearm, nodding toward the lower stairwell. "The lead bulkhead lies directly beneath the old turbine foundation."
"Watch your footing along the lower catwalk." Nila flicked her fingers toward a patch of iridescent grease near the railing. "One slip means swimming in six feet of industrial residue."
Darek walked close behind them, his eyes scanning the shadows with silent, predator alertness across the corridor.
"I spent two months scrubbing these lower drains when the guards punished me." Darek touched the faint scars along his knuckles with a solemn nod. "They always kept that lower hatch chained from the outside."
The five companions descended the damp spiral stairs, their steps ringing hollow against the wet stone risers.
At the bottom of the shaft stood a massive circular hatch sealed with six manual locking lugs.
Thick lead plates covered the face of the hatch, stained with chemical efflorescence from decades of dripping moisture.
"Those locking lugs are rusted solid." Ruby tapped the nearest iron bar with the butt of her spear, listening to the dull thud. "We need more than muscle to crack this seal."
"Step back three paces." Darek raised both hands, manifesting two curved bone blades with a crisp snap of cartilage.
He drove the tips into the seized threads, channeling focused physical pressure until the rusted locking bars sheared clean through.
The circular hatch swung outward on counterweighted hinges, releasing a cold puff of dry ozone into the humid stairwell.
"Air scrubbers inside this vault ran on independent capacitors for twenty years." Maya stepped across the threshold, shining her tactical torch into the room. "The atmospheric filtration is still functioning."
Fin stepped inside the subterranean chamber, his night-vision adjusting to the long rows of dormant computer banks.
The room stretched thirty meters into the bedrock, lined with dust-covered observation consoles and cracked monitor screens.
In the center of the hall stood an elevated circular platform surrounded by six shattered hydraulic stanchions.
A tall cylinder rested on the pedestal, completely empty except for dry white residue clinging to the base.
"Look at the serial stamp on the foundation collar." Nila brushed away a layer of grey grime with her gloved palm. "Subject Designation NULL, project authorization date twenty years ago."
Fin approached the tall cylinder on the pedestal, feeling an odd, inexplicable stillness settle deep through his chest.
"This was where they attempted the very first containment." Fin touched the smooth cylinder, feeling zero mana vibration within the inert material. "Before Dr. Thorne ever set foot inside the building."
Maya inserted an interface probe into the central console, her fingers flying rapidly across the auxiliary keyboard.
"The main memory banks suffered severe data decay, but the primary laboratory journal remains intact." Maya adjusted the contrast on the monochrome monitor, her eyes scanning the green phosphor text. "Chief Researcher Haddon logged these entries fifteen years ago."
"What does Haddon write about the project?" Ruby leaned over the terminal, keeping her shield braced against her hip.
"Listen to this entry from year fourteen." Maya pointed her finger toward the scrolling lines of recovered data. "We failed forty-seven consecutive attempts to culture an artificial vessel capable of holding multiple affinities."
"Every synthetic clone collapsed from internal organ rupture within six weeks." Maya highlighted the medical diagnostic logs with a grim frown. "The human body rejects forced circuit grafting unless the vessel is born with a complete circuit void."
"A natural blank vessel." Darek stared from the monitor text toward Fin with wide, astonished eyes. "They were not trying to build you in a vat."
"They were trying to locate an infant who was born with zero natural mana circuits." Maya scrolled down to the summary paragraph, looking directly at Fin. "Haddon concluded that an organic empty vessel only occurs naturally once in ten million births."
"Genesis searched maternity clinics across three districts fifteen years ago." Ruby clenched her jaw with sudden fury. "They wanted to snatch a natural vessel before the family ever understood what they had."
"Our parents kept us hidden in District Four." Fin looked at his own open palm, remembering his childhood fevers and the quiet neighborhood life. "They never registered my childhood diagnostic tests with the municipal clinics."
"Your mother knew something was different about you." Darek reached out, his hand resting gently against the cold surface of the empty cylinder. "She protected you from being dragged into a place like this."
Fin felt a wave of profound gratitude for the parents who worked warehouse shifts to keep him safe and free.
"They saved me from becoming a monster in a tank." Fin tightened his grip around his hatchet haft with steady resolve. "And we saved forty-eight children from sharing that nightmare."
Maya tapped a command sequence into the keyboard, transferring the entire research archive onto her encrypted storage drive.
"Haddon hid a physical backup ledger inside the floor safe beneath the pedestal." Maya pointed to a recessed brass hatch under the cylinder. "The logs contain full names of the corporate sponsors who funded this laboratory."
Fin knelt beside the pedestal, inserting the tip of his reverse hatchet spike beneath the brass lid.
With a sharp levering motion backed by his sovereign strength, the brass locking bolts sheared away with a loud pop.
Inside the lined compartment lay a leather-bound journal bound with wire and three sealed data cores.
Fin lifted the journal from the compartment, wiping away the thin layer of dust with his thumb.
"Take every scrap of paper and every data core." Fin passed the ledger to Maya, who stowed it securely inside her padded satchel. "Magistrate Hallowell will want every single signature when the tribunal convenes."
"This journal connects the waterworks dumping directly to the board of directors in District Three." Maya verified the signatures on the first parchment page, smiling fiercely. "They cannot claim ignorance anymore."
The blue glow of his system interface materialized before his eyes, illuminating the chamber with pleasant light.

His experience pool expanded cleanly to eighty-four million five hundred thousand toward the Rank B threshold.
Every milestone brought him closer to the power needed to protect his family and dismantle the corporate predators forever.
Before anyone could speak, a low mechanical tremor vibrated through the bedrock beneath their feet.
From the archway at the rear of the chamber, two crimson optical sensors flared to life with an ominous hum.
A towering silhouette of blackened armor plate stepped forward from the shadows, its hydraulic joints hissing with pent-up pneumatic force.
"Looks like Haddon left a personal bodyguard behind." Ruby raised her tower shield, planting her feet firmly into the floor.
"Get ready." Fin shifted his stance, his hatchet raised as the construct locked its targeting sensors onto the squad.
The massive machine raised two rotating drill heads, venting plumes of pressurized steam as it began its charge.
