SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 111: Sub-Level Four
Rime coated the descending service stairs as freezing vapor drifted up from the unsealed hatch of Sub-Level Four.
Fluorescent tubes flickered along the perimeter walls while moisture dripped steadily from overhead coolant conduits into shallow drainage troughs below.
Fin paused on the landing, adjusting the grip on his hatchet while testing the traction beneath his feet.
"The air temperature drops twenty degrees past this landing," Fin blew a warm puff of air against his knuckles, watching mist curl into the darkness.
"Sub-zero conditions across the entire lower tier," Nila observed, her breath puffing into white clouds as she checked the balance of her daggers. "Krell maintained this deck as an auxiliary cryonics vault."
"Did your scanners pick up power signatures along the ceiling?" Fin leaned over the metal guardrail to inspect the descending stairwell.
"Two active circuits running to the perimeter rails," Darek answered, his bone blades extending with a quiet metallic click. "They used ceiling turrets to keep the lower specimens from climbing the intake shafts."
"We move in tight formation along the central catwalk," Fin stepped onto the frozen tread, keeping his balance low and balanced. "Ruby stayed at Pine Street to coordinate the clinic watch, so it is just the three of us on this sweep."
"Watch the ceiling brackets and stay clear of the conduit joints," Nila warned, following a half-pace behind his left flank with sharp, searching eyes. "Liquid nitrogen lines can shatter if they take a stray strike."
Fin stepped through the bulk hatch, his senses expanding outward as Threat Sense painted the freezing gloom in sharp relief.
Sub-Level Four stretched eighty yards into subterranean bedrock, divided into four partitioned storage sectors by reinforced mesh screens.
Liquid nitrogen lines hissed softly within wall recesses, releasing plumes of dry fog across the perforated deck plates.
Along the overhead ceiling rails, two dual-barrel automated turrets whined into motion, their optical sensors glowing crimson.
"Turrets tracking heat signatures on the catwalk!" Darek hissed, crouching low as the motorized swivels aligned their barrels.
"Do not let them spin up," Fin called out, shifting his weight forward to draw their initial target lock.
Nila reacted with fluid speed, flicking her wrists to send twin throwing daggers spinning toward the ceiling.
The hardened blades severed the braided power cables flush against the junction box with crisp metallic snaps.
Crimson targeting beams flickered once and died as the overhead turrets went limp on their swivel mounts.
"Power lines severed on the northern rail," Nila caught her breath, retrieving two backup blades from her utility harness. "Turret capacitors are draining into the grounding plate."
"Listen to the pressure valves behind that partition," Fin raised his hatchet, his ears picking up a rapid pneumatic sequence.
A harsh pneumatic hiss echoed through the vault as four pressurized cryo-pods vented clouds of freezing vapor.
The emergency power cutoff triggered the container failsafes, releasing locking clamps from four sealed biological vats.
Four chitinous abominations dropped from the frost-covered pods onto the floor plates with wet, skittering thuds.
They were mutated frost-crawlers, eight-legged abyssal predators covered in jagged ice-encrusted carapaces and dripping venomous mandibles.
"Mutated crawler specimens," Darek rasped, taking a defensive stance with steam whistling from his brass collar. "Krell bred them from abyssal cave stalkers to guard the cryogenic storage bank."
"They are fast on ice," Nila shifted her footing across the slick metal plates, keeping her daggers pointed forward. "Do not let them circle behind the catwalk railing."
"I have the center lane," Fin planted his feet firmly, his muscles coiling with explosive power. "Hold the flanks."
Fin tightened his gloved fingers around the hatchet handle, watching the lead abomination coil its rear legs.
The lead crawler lunged across thirty feet of frozen deck plating, its mandibles snapping with violent speed.
A concentrated jet of pale blue paralytic venom sprayed from its maw, splashing directly across Fin’s chest and forearms.
Fin did not flinch or give ground as the freezing chemical spray coated his jacket and bare neck.
His Frost Skin passive trait flared instantly, its thirty percent low-temperature mitigation turning the venom into harmless slush.
The paralytic agent failed completely against his conditioned dermal layers, sliding away without numbing a single nerve.
"The venom has zero effect against my skin," Fin grinned faintly, shaking the frozen crystals from his knuckles. "Darek, take the left flank while I crack the center shell!"
"Moving now!" Darek vaulted over the guardrail, intercepting the second beast with a ferocious scythe strike.
Fin stepped forward with explosive momentum, swinging his hatchet in a brutal rising arc driven by one hundred and thirty-six Strength.
The hardened reverse spike caught the lead crawler directly beneath its mandibular plate, punching through the reinforced chitin.
A concussive shockwave shattered the creature’s cranial core, collapsing the beast into an inert heap of frozen fragments.
To the left, the second crawler skittered along the partition screen, attempting to leap down upon Fin from above.
Darek met it mid-air, driving both bone blades through the creature’s thoracic joints to sever its primary leg tendons.
The crawler crashed onto the catwalk, thrashing violently as Nila closed the distance with a low, sliding strike.
Her combat knife pierced the creature’s nerve cluster behind its primary ocular cluster, silencing its struggles permanently.
The two remaining crawlers hissed in unison, scrambling across the frosted ceiling rails to mount a coordinated pincer attack.
Fin anticipated their trajectory, launching himself three feet into the air to meet the third abomination as it dropped.
His hatchet cleaved cleanly through its frozen thoracic spine, splitting the creature in two before his feet touched the floor.
Behind him, Nila and Darek executed a flawless cross-slash, pinning the fourth crawler against the bedrock wall and finishing it cleanly.
Darek exhaled a ragged breath, his hands shaking slightly as steam vented from the seams of his brass collar.
"That was clean squad coordination," Fin noted, stepping over the shattered carapace to inspect the storage racks beyond. "You timed your intercept right at the apex of its leap."
"I used to watch them feed these things from the intake ducts," Darek murmured, looking down at the dead crawler with a mixture of disgust and relief. "They threw living stray animals into those pods twice a week."
"Well, nothing is feeding on anything in this vault ever again," Nila said, retrieving her throwing daggers from the severed power junction and wiping them dry.
Fin walked past the shattered containment pods, his eyes scanning the frosted metal lockers lining the northern bulkhead.
Inside the storage bays were rows of sealed cryogenic vials labeled with numerical project codes and chemical preservation formulas.
"Look at these labels," Fin pointed his hatchet toward the frosted acrylic cases. "Stabilized monster core extracts and synthetic marrow binders."
"Krell was manufacturing artificial mana circuits down here," Nila whistled softly under her breath, shining her tactical light over the inventory manifests. "This whole facility was designed to clone and graft experimental vessels on an industrial scale."
"We are taking every single one of these logbooks back to Talla," Fin stated firmly, closing the locker door with a solid metallic latch. "Magistrate Hallowell will need this documentation to shut down their parent shell companies."
Silence returned to Sub-Level Four, broken only by the steady dripping of condensation and the faint hum of emergency fans.
Fin stood among the shattered carcasses, breathing evenly as his body temperature regulated naturally against the subterranean chill.

His experience pool surged past the seventy million mark, climbing to seventy million five hundred thousand toward Rank B.
"Every specimen pod on this deck is neutral," Nila reported, cleaning her blade with a cloth before sheathing it at her hip. "The upper levels are completely protected from bio-hazard contamination."
"Let us secure the emergency power switches and lock down this hatch," Fin gestured toward the master breaker box by the stairs. "We have an accounting review waiting at Pine Street."
"Lead the way," Darek retracted his bone blades with a crisp, fluid snap, turning toward the ascending stairwell. "I think I am finally ready for that warm bowl of soup."
