SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 103: Shadows at the Water Gate
The midnight fog rolled thick and cold off the river as Fin lowered himself through the iron maintenance grate of Conduit 9.
The cold sound of rushing water echoed through the dark stone vault while giant pressure valves turned with deep steady thumps.
Damp mist hung over the narrow catwalks as yellow emergency lanterns cast long patterns across the flooded floor below.
Ruby climbed down behind him, her round shield slung across her back and her long spear gripped in her right hand.
Nila dropped silently onto the grating, landing on the balls of her feet without making a single vibration on the rusted railing.
"The acoustic jammers are online," Maya whispered over the radio link from the surface pipe, her voice clear through the small brass earpiece, "any alarms inside the reservoir will loop back into their own empty relays."
"Nim is guarding the upper culvert hatch," Fin murmured back, checking the balance of his hatchet in his right hand, "if we get cut off, she has the flare ready."
He stepped forward along the narrow catwalk, following the massive water pipes that fed directly into Facility Zero’s subterranean heat exchangers.
The air grew steadily warmer as they moved deeper into the waterworks, smelling of burnt oil and scorched electrical coils.
Fin focused his awareness, extending Threat Sense twenty yards through the swirling steam and shadows of the lower reservoir floor.
A strange sensation pulsed against his perception, unlike any construct or monster he encountered in the lower districts.
The signal was chaotic and jagged, marked by intense cellular friction, erratic mana spikes, and the continuous whistling of synthetic organ vents.
"Hold up." Fin raised his left fist to halt Ruby and Nila along the narrow catwalk. "We are not alone down here."
"A patrol?" Ruby stepped forward to bring her shield to bear while scanning the dark pipes above the sluice gate.
"No." Fin tightened his fingers around the hickory handle of his hatchet. "Whatever is waiting up ahead is burning itself alive just to stay standing."
Before Nila could draw her throwing daggers, a shadow dropped from the high ceiling rafters with terrifying speed.
The figure struck the walkway grating ten paces ahead of Fin, the impact ringing through the hollow vault like a struck church bell.
A young man crouched on the catwalk, his ragged coat torn away to reveal scarred skin crisscrossed with violent surgical incisions.
A thick brass suppression collar was locked around his throat, its warning lights flickering erratically between dull yellow and angry red.
From his forearms protruded two jagged blades of reinforced monster bone, held in place by crude metal brackets bolted directly into his wrists.
His chest rose and fell in ragged gasps, his skin cracking with pale steam as artificial mana surged through his synthetic veins.
"More corporate hounds," the stranger snarled, his voice rasping like gravel ground between iron gears, "you came to drag me back into the vats!"
"We are not here for Genesis." Fin held his hatchet in a low, non-threatening guard. "We came to tear this whole place down."
"Liar!" the stranger screamed, his eyes flashing with desperate amber fire as he launched himself across the narrow catwalk.
The stranger moved with frantic, explosive speed, swinging both bone blades toward Fin’s throat in a scissor strike that cut through the mist.
Fin did not panic and did not trigger Overclock, relying entirely on his baseline Agility to read the incoming trajectory.
He shifted his weight two inches to the left, letting the whistling blades slice through empty air beside his cheek.
Fin brought the flat of his hatchet up with crisp mechanical precision, slapping the right bone blade away before it could recover.
The stranger spun with feral desperation, kicking out with a reinforced heel toward Fin’s ribs while slashing downward with his left blade.
Ruby lunged forward to intercept, but Fin waved her back with a sharp flick of his combat dagger.
"Stay back, Ruby," Fin called out, ducking beneath the sweeping kick and planting his feet firmly on the metal grating, "I have him."
He drove the pommel of his dagger against the stranger’s wrist bracket, disrupting the nerve cluster and deflecting the downward slash into the railing.
Sparks flew from the scarred railing as the bone blade gouged deep into the metal, sending a jolt of vibration up the stranger’s arm.
Instead of retreating, the stranger let out a bloodcurdling howl, his synthetic chest graft flaring with an unstable, violet absorption surge.
A ravenous pulling force tore through the air, attempting to rip the vital energy straight out of Fin’s body like a whirlpool.
Fin felt the synthetic siphon latch onto his chest, but his sovereign Pulse 10 density did not yield a single drop of power.
His inner core remained as solid as mountain bedrock, completely ignoring the erratic suction generated by the stranger’s counterfeit organs.
"What is wrong with your core?" Fin asked aloud, his eyes widening in genuine curiosity as he watched steam erupt from the stranger’s collar. "That pull is ripping your own muscle fibers apart!"
"Shut up!" the stranger shrieked, coughing up a spatter of dark blood as the backlash of the failed absorption tore through his lungs.
The stranger lunged forward once more, putting every shred of remaining strength into a desperate, overhead cleave with both bone blades.
Fin stepped inside the attack with fluid economy, planting his left foot forward and raising his hatchet horizontally to meet the blow.
The hardened steel of the hatchet blade met the crossed bone weapons with a ringing crack that echoed through the entire intake vault.
Hot white steam hissed from the cracked suppression collar while water droplets sizzled against the stranger’s burning chest plate.
The rushing current churned through the drainage gate below them while both fighters held their balance on the slick walkway.
Their faces were inches apart across the locked steel and bone, their eyes meeting through the swirling clouds of scalding vapor.
Up close, Fin could see the raw, weeping stitch marks running from the stranger’s collar down into his breastbone.
The stranger was staring into Fin’s eyes with wide, dilated pupils, his frantic aggression suddenly freezing into absolute, staggering shock.
Through the physical contact of their locked weapons, the stranger felt the pure, unblemished blankness radiating from Fin’s sovereign core.
"You have no mana circuits," the stranger gasped, his trembling hands losing their murderous tension as his jaw dropped, "not a single natural thread."
"Born without them." Fin held the hatchet steady without exerting more pressure than necessary to keep the blades pinned.
"The empty vessel," the stranger choked out, a bizarre mixture of awe and horror twisting his scarred features, "Prototype Zero... the ghost they spent twenty years trying to synthesize."
Fin frowned, feeling the strange resonance between his own system and the dying, counterfeit organs humming inside the stranger’s chest.
"Who are you?" Fin demanded, his voice steady and calm amid the roaring waterfalls of the intake gate.
"They called me Subject One," the stranger whispered, his knees buckling under the agonizing heat of his collapsing synthetic graft, "the first broken dog they threw away."
Fin caught the stranger’s shoulder with his left hand, preventing him from falling over the low railing into the churning sluice gate below.
Fin glanced at the blue translucent window that flashed at the edge of his vision, recording the completed combat encounter.
The system interface updated smoothly, confirming an award of two million six hundred thousand experience points for subduing the rogue prototype.
His total experience climbed to forty-four million eight hundred thousand toward the next sovereign threshold while his core held invariant stability.
"Easy now." Fin eased his hatchet back into its leather loop while supporting the shivering youth against the safety rail. "Nobody is throwing you away tonight."
